BRILLIANT stuff, strikingly original without coming out idiotic and pretentious, great lyrics, awesome vocals, and an overwhelming display of who the talented half of At The Drive In were. One of my top 3 of the year.

I listened to the first 3 tracks at my local record shop and wasn't particularly compelled to go further. I'm not sure why. I like the soundscapes, but I think it's the lyrics and some of that delivery. Doesn't quite mesh for me. Interesting sound, though.

Mars Volta is the kind of band that gets amazing reviews from a few of the right people and as a result every "alternative" music fan in the entire world runs to their favorite IRC channel or message board to refer to it as the greatest album ever released.

 

It's bizarre. Mars Volta goes against what is trendy these days and as a result every kid in the world desperately trying to NOT be trendy starts flapping their gums to anyone who will listen about how great it is, in essence creating a trend and acheiving exactly the opposite of what they were trying to do. I'm not saying those in this thread are, I'm just saying a lot of people I have seen around the internet will blindly jump on the bandwagon of anything that goes against the grain.

 

I love experimental stuff (The Postal Service rules the school), but I just don't see the appeal in Mars Volta. They try so hard to not follow any practical rhyme or reason that it just comes off sounding like such a mess that the only people who will likely get it are high. It's like cooking, you can't just throw a bunch of random shit in to a pan, call it "new wave" or "experimental" and expect people to eat it. The songs have no repeating choruses (I know, I'm so simple minded), no basic structure and are the equivalent of throwing about fifteen instruments in to the blender and recording the ensuing ruckus. It just sounds like a poor man's Pink Floyd in my opinion.

Personally, I don't really understand the rave reviews it's been getting. It should be crap, but for some reason I really like it. I dunno, maybe years of listening to At The Drive-In have conditioned me for atunal guitar solos.

Bought it last week, listened to it like five times through since then...good shit. Oh, and yah, The Postal Service is rather good..sucks I missed them when they came to town.

That's so true. I just casually mention to my friends that this CD was killer and suddenly they go and buy it and love it, and these are people who had just heard of the Mars Volta.

Anyway, Mars Volta is all sound and fury, signifying nothing. For all the supposed denseness of it, not much is going on.

 

Plus, Cedric Bixler needs to shut up. He's a pretty good screamer, but his attempts at singing are atrocious.

For those of you who like the album, or ATDI, or just want to see what the fuss is about, I strongly reccomend seing TMV live. I've just got back from their show in Portsmouth, UK and they were absolutely stunning.

Omar is the greatest guitarist I've seen play live.
