Guest Narcoleptic Jumper Posted June 28, 2003 Report Posted June 28, 2003 Go purchase or invest some time into downloading that motherfucker right now. Album of the year, IMO.
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Posted June 28, 2003 Report Posted June 28, 2003 Yes, Mars Volta. Been waiting for this album for quite some time.
rising up out of the back seat-nuh Posted June 28, 2003 Report Posted June 28, 2003 Too true. I'm gonna see them on the 8th. The album is seriously one of the best I've ever heard.
Zetterberg is God Posted June 29, 2003 Report Posted June 29, 2003 I concur. This is seriously better than anything else released in a while.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Posted June 29, 2003 Report Posted June 29, 2003 BRILLIANT stuff, strikingly original without coming out idiotic and pretentious, great lyrics, awesome vocals, and an overwhelming display of who the talented half of At The Drive In were. One of my top 3 of the year.
Guest JebusNassedar Posted June 29, 2003 Report Posted June 29, 2003 See, I didnt yell and rant about Mars Volta for no reason. And now you know why. ... *looks left* ... *looks right* ... MARS FUCKING VOLTA!! WHOOOOOOOOO!!
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted June 30, 2003 Report Posted June 30, 2003 I listened to the first 3 tracks at my local record shop and wasn't particularly compelled to go further. I'm not sure why. I like the soundscapes, but I think it's the lyrics and some of that delivery. Doesn't quite mesh for me. Interesting sound, though.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted July 2, 2003 Report Posted July 2, 2003 Well, I didn't *understand* them, but I heard them. I.E., I could make out the words, but had no idea what the hell any of it was supposed to be about. Hence my confusion.
Guest Hass of Pain Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 Mars Volta is the kind of band that gets amazing reviews from a few of the right people and as a result every "alternative" music fan in the entire world runs to their favorite IRC channel or message board to refer to it as the greatest album ever released. It's bizarre. Mars Volta goes against what is trendy these days and as a result every kid in the world desperately trying to NOT be trendy starts flapping their gums to anyone who will listen about how great it is, in essence creating a trend and acheiving exactly the opposite of what they were trying to do. I'm not saying those in this thread are, I'm just saying a lot of people I have seen around the internet will blindly jump on the bandwagon of anything that goes against the grain. I love experimental stuff (The Postal Service rules the school), but I just don't see the appeal in Mars Volta. They try so hard to not follow any practical rhyme or reason that it just comes off sounding like such a mess that the only people who will likely get it are high. It's like cooking, you can't just throw a bunch of random shit in to a pan, call it "new wave" or "experimental" and expect people to eat it. The songs have no repeating choruses (I know, I'm so simple minded), no basic structure and are the equivalent of throwing about fifteen instruments in to the blender and recording the ensuing ruckus. It just sounds like a poor man's Pink Floyd in my opinion.

I dunno, maybe years of listening to At The Drive-In have conditioned me for atunal guitar solos. I'm really surprised that people are jumping on the band-wagon and liking TMV to be cool. It's prog-rock god-dammit!
Guest Zero_Cool Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 Bought it last week, listened to it like five times through since then...good shit. Oh, and yah, The Postal Service is rather good..sucks I missed them when they came to town. I was actually kind of surprised with Omar's vocals. Like, he seemed to let loose or something, or I'm just crazy.
Guest Anorak Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 I was never impressed by At The Drive In when they were around so I think i'll give this a miss.
Zetterberg is God Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 I'm really surprised that people are jumping on the band-wagon and liking TMV to be cool. It's prog-rock god-dammit! That's so true. I just casually mention to my friends that this CD was killer and suddenly they go and buy it and love it, and these are people who had just heard of the Mars Volta.
Guest Incandenza Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 I love experimental stuff (The Postal Service rules the school) ... Anyway, Mars Volta is all sound and fury, signifying nothing. For all the supposed denseness of it, not much is going on. Plus, Cedric Bixler needs to shut up. He's a pretty good screamer, but his attempts at singing are atrocious.
rising up out of the back seat-nuh Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 For those of you who like the album, or ATDI, or just want to see what the fuss is about, I strongly reccomend seing TMV live. I've just got back from their show in Portsmouth, UK and they were absolutely stunning. Omar is the greatest guitarist I've seen play live.
