Final Fantasy VII-2

Bit of the FF7 ending:

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Red XIII noted that Holy had the opposite intended effect, ie it pulled Meteor closer, suggesting that Meteor wasn't the planet's problem, rather that something else was.

Maybe we'll get an answer to that.

What *I* got from the FF VII ending, after much message board discussion and analysis was

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

The planet's problem that Red is referring to is HUMANITY. Human beings are slowly destroying the planet, and present a much deeper threat to its continued existence than a big ol' rock from space. IMO, Holy + Meteor end up wiping out humanity, leaving only species such as Red XIII's to spawn and prosper. This is why 500 years later Midgar, the epitome of humanity's destruction of the planet, is shown as overgrown with plantlife, a symbol of the planet's victory over industry. That's why we only see what happens to Red as well--everyone else = dead.

How they'll make a sequel of THAT, I have no idea. Maybe that theory will be shot down.

I'm down for a sequel to FF7, since i loved the first one despite not having enough patience to finish disk one (& it took me MONTHS to get where i was, which was umm...i can't remember, sorry). If THAT was the fucking ending, then i'm kinda curious how they can do this properly, as are most of you. Hell, i'm still confused as how you can actually HAVE more than one Final Fantasy, let alone 10, & have the 7th twice!

I do have this "Attack of the Clones" fear though, where everything remotely good will be pissed on in favor of special affects & stupid storylines.

I just hope it has the same basic set up as 8 did (no fucking MPs), & at least TRYS to connect to at least one other of the series, like 8, because 7.5 is just kinda dumb. Have something like Tifa & Cloud marry & give birth to Rinoa or something.

Best injustice they could do: the return of Sephiroth, explained in a plausible fashion.

Worst injustice they could do: Aeris being involved, period. i'd accept nothing more than a "visitation" scene.

I'd rather see Final Fantasy VIII-2. There was just so much they could have done with the concept of Garden and the SeeDs, and it ended up being the worst game since the first.

Failing that, I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to IX, since those characters actually have stories that could be continued.

Unfortunately, the two most marketable games in the series (VI & VII) both ended in such a way where there is no real way to have a sequel. A prequel can be done for VI (the whole War of the Magi thing), but I can't see anything coming out of VII that won't completely screw up continuity.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Yes, everybody dies at the end of VII. That is why Cloud sees Aeris at the end. I don't know how Red XIII survived (presumably the Highwind would crash with noone to land it), but he is supposed to be the old animal at the end with the cubs.

I remember a while ago Square was talking about "remastering" all 3 of the Playstation Final Fantasy's (VII, VIII, IX) with all new next generation graphics for PS2, and then bundling them together for sale. Did they scrap that idea in favor of this?

I never minded FF8 all that much, I don't understand why it gets so much hate. Chrono Cross was excellent in my opinion, but if you were looking for a game that will match up with Chrono Trigger, don't hold your breath. As Special K said, Square has set their standards for excellence so high that it's impossible for them to match it now. And another thing I've learned, nostalgia is a dangerous thing...oftentimes we remember things being better than they actually were.

They scraped the idea. Supposedly though, I heard from word of mouth (meaning a customer whom I chat with) at work, that he's heard that a Japanese friend of his said that there is rumblings that FFVII might still be remastered.

Note: I don't really know said customer well, and frankly, he's talking about a rumor too. So take this as a grain of salt.

What REALLY needs to be remastered are the SNES games.

I think 8 gets hate because of wasted potential and a lame storyline. Plus a horrible magic/junction system.

FFVII was already released on the PC with better graphics so how much better would the remastered version be?

I liked the junction/magic thing in 8 simply because i'm an idiot & don't like dealing with the fucking MPs. It's just nervewracking for me, but maybe that's the nonverbal learning disability talking.

IF they went through & remastered the other games (a new & VASTLY improved FF: Legend would be nice), i'd buy them provided they'd be good enough. I mean, you don't go from FF9 for example then switch back to the blockier graphics. They SHOULD release a new version of FF7 around x-mas for like a 7 year anniversary (7, get it?) & include a remastered game, bonus epilogue disc (a rough sequel, but maybe a little shorter) & like a DVD on the remastering process. it'd be kinda pricey but worth it.

Wait? You liked the Junction system because you thought it was simple??? I hated it because it was a pain in the ass! The Materia System from 7 was much better.

usually it was pretty straightforward for me. But i'd be lying if i said i didn't have...issues from time to time. The thing i didn't like about it was the ability, to quote Ron Popeil, "set it & forget it" i would just forget sometimes what i fucking had.

Wasn't the wasted potential due to the fact that the story was really changed in the middle of development?

I remember reading an old EGM which had a preview of FFVIII, and the main character was Laguna. It kinda makes sense too...Laguna's adventures in the "flashbacks" did follow a typical FF format (wandering around the planet etc). Heck, the big song from that game was about Laguna and his chick from the bar. Why else would the song be about them, as opposed to Rinoa/Squall?

It also explains the totally half-assed "We all knew each other, but forgot" aspect of the storyline. ie the writers just had to wrap everything up so they came up with that half assed explanation.

Anyone know anything about this?

PS - I liked FFVIII. Magic system sucked, but it's not like you really needed to use it all that much.

If that's true it would explain a lot. I too really liked the Laguna story and wished it was all based around his story instead.

I think I hated it mostly because Squall was the biggest wuss in Final Fantasy history to be a main character. I wanted to punch the TV he got so annoying.

Hm. Didn't hear about how Laguna went from lead to secondary, but that does makes sense, since I do remember thinking that Laguna would be a cool person to be. Still like him better than his son.

As for Squall, it wasn't so much he was a wuss, which he wasn't, it was the fact that he was annoying, totally emotionless, and frankly just didn't know much about the life around him.

"Whatever" <-- Main problem with Squall. Characters can't be completely apathetic. I mean, I guess he did have some character progression, in that he did care by the end...but it's useless if you make the audience hate the guy.

And yeah, a Laguna game would have been neat. Dunno how that would have worked out, but it might have turned out to be a cool game.

As I said. Totally emotionless. Sure, he did become a person, but the guy had NO fucking reason to be the way he was.

As for Laguna as main, it would've been the "flashbacks" that we were given and the ACTUAL progression of him till he became President and then him joining up with his son to battling Rinoa (come on, Griever as the ultimate summoned monster, and add to the fact that Sorceresses live for hundreds of years, it only makes sense).

Yes, spoiler infested, but hell. If you haven't played the game by now, I don't really care.

Squall was the RVD of the Final Fantasy series: Totally stupid about the world around him, and not ready to take that step to become great...

As for a sequel to this...yes, I would not like to see one. Although the ending wasn't...you know, something I wanted to see, I'm extremely mad that they'd even THINK about a sequel to this...

another thing I l,oved about FFVII was that you could influence (in a very small way) the characters around Cloud. Of course it was in a romantic way, but I liked the fact that you didn;t HAVE to have him match up with Tifa, even though she was by far the best fir for Cloud... not to mention I LOVED her Limit Breaks and the way they were set up, combo-style.

My love for Tifa aside, that's how they should improve upon the 7.5, more choices in interacting with the other characters in the game.. the combat system was straight-up old school FF style aside from the Limit Breaks so not much needs to chance there...

and for the love of all that's sacred DON'T BASH US OVER THE DAMNED HEAD WITH THE STORYLINE!!!!!

Ahem.

I feel better now.

I liked her too. She was everything that Tifa wasn't. I just have penchant for pretty female martial artists

Since we've gone into discussing FF Females, isn't Rinoa the fucking UGLIEST name they could choose?

I was thinking, would it be possible to do a more detailed prequel to FF7 as opposed to a sequel? i know they had the flashback shit, but hell, i need some Sephiroth baddness.

FF8 was good until the "we went to the same orphanage" thing. when they got rid of the main villain (Matron Sorceress whatshername) & replaced her with the other one, it just was...Russoed. Squall was a bitch, Seifer was pretty much useless-the usual bitching. While i'm at it, Cloud was an AWESOME character: troubled, intelligent, the definitive shade of gray, all that cool shit. i just wish he had a better fucking name. Cloud Strife sounds like a pornstar. Squall Leonheart at least sounded like a venereal disease, fitting of his personality

Rinoa is pretty much the untranslated (if I'm not mistaken, which I'll ended up being) name that's in Japanese. The problem is when a name can't be translated, it stays at it's original name. Hence, it wasn't like the translation department had much choice. Well, they do to a degree, but this IS Square (originally).

They could do a prequel to FFVII, but it would be originally when Jenova first landed and how the Cetra battled her to their doom (well, besides the few that managed to survive). So Sephiroth wouldn't be back. The war of Shinra vs everyone might be a good storyline, but if they want something fresh, it would be something far easy to grasp and mold.

No offense, but a lot of Final Fantasys were Russoed. FF 4 with Zeromus (even though it SHOULDA BEEN GOLBEZ). FF 7 had us tossing back and forth the notion that "oh, must kill Sephy, no Jenovy, no Sephy, no Jenovy, no Meteor, no Jenovy, no Meteor yet again...". FF8 fucked everything up by taking out Edea as the main bad dude and replacing her with Rinoa (I will never accept what they called her, because fuck it, it only makes sense if you think about it logically). FF9 had us all believing that Kuja was supposed to be the ultimate bad dude, except they replace that with some dude at the end that just appears out of no where and is the final boss (for WHAT FUCKING PURPOSE???). FFX had Sin being the whole fucking focus of the story till someone decided to lose his balls and go, oh, it's like this seriously sinister dude that was the husband of the first Summoner that created himself as the original Sin when he died or some crap like that. So please never speak again of Russoed and Final Fantasy again. Cause they do go hand and hand.

As for Cloud, actually that's the Japanese translation once again, and they decided to run with it. The japanese name was translated into english form of something like Cloud and they ran with it. Original shots of the FFVII had Cloud being Claude, but guess what? NO they don't do that.

Rinoa = Lenore

Wait. You mean that was translatable? And THAT was the translation?

Then why the fuck did Square keep it the same?

Rinoa was a frigging tard. God. Anyone remember the climactic battle scene between the two floating Seed schools (which was wicked) when everyone told Squall to go find Rinoa right in the middle of it? Like, hello? Ugh.

And the patheticness of Seifer as a boss didn't really help matters. He should have been WAY tougher to beat. It seems like they've been making the end battles really easy...the final battle in FFX was like impossible to lose.

Speaking of FFX, Sin should have been the freaking end boss. Yu Yevon = the suck.

Fighting Braska's final summon was pretty cool though.

Now, why can't an FF game have one, big, arching enemy like in Chrono Trigger? Or even something like Ogre Battle? Games don't need main boss swerves.

It would be kinda funny if Yuna did a worked shoot or something in FFX2 though. RUSSO POWAH!

Wow, you're right, they ARE all swerves.

At least the one in FFVI is logically built to, and not so Russofied.

Look at it as our way of giving back to the world we shun for men rolling around in spandex. Besides, i maintain hope that if "Bling Bling" can get in the dictionary, things like Russoed, Schmoz & Sick Bump can in due time. :)
