Guest nikowwf Report post Posted July 2, 2003 I was very disheartened by Gail Kim's debut... 1) They didn't announce she was coming out before hand, which would have conditioned the crowd to expect her and would have gotten her a big pop. Instead, they just sent her out flat. 2) They put her over in a Battle Royale that popped out of nowhere, establishing that she didn't win the title in a real match. Better yet, the match was god-awful. That's why the pop when she won wasn't that big. They sent Trish out to die on her own when she debuted (Remember that horrid interview) and she came back and did well. I think Gail will be able to get over on her own too. Still, considering they gave her good little teasers and there was a nice buzz I don't understand why they couldn't have spent more than 5 seconds thinking of a better way to introduce her. niko
Guest OnlyMe Report post Posted July 2, 2003 I'd guess it's because she's "only" a woman. But you're right; it was silly.
Guest Dynamite Kido Report post Posted July 2, 2003 I don't know, excuse me if anybody is offened by this but I could honestly give a flying shit about women's wrestling. Sorry, that is women's wrestling in North America.....
Guest nikowwf Report post Posted July 2, 2003 Nope, im not offened by you at all. But the fact you don't care about it doesn't make what they did good. Its completely unrelated. niko
Guest OnlyMe Report post Posted July 2, 2003 The problem is that they don't really care either

Guest OnlyMe Report post Posted July 2, 2003 best part of her debut was seeing her thong strap And there's WHY WWE don't care about women's wrestling.
Guest oldschoolwrestling Report post Posted July 2, 2003 That match was soooooo fucking sloooooowwww. They were out there working like they had just had a full Thanksgiving dinner seconds before coming out.
Guest Lil Naitch Report post Posted July 2, 2003 They did the same thing to Jazz when she debuted- only with her she had no build up, just thrown into a battle royal for the womens title at SurSer as a mystery entrant, which she LOST and then disappeared for a few weeks untill they brought ehr back. At least Gail Kim had build up
Guest Goodear Report post Posted July 2, 2003 Considering the circumstances around the battle royal and the possibility that Jazz was injured going into the match and thats why they had to get the strap off her, I don't have a problem with the booking decision. Telling the crowd that Gail Kim is coming is pointless considering that no one knows what she brings to the table anyway. Now she just has to go out and prove that she's no fluke which is fine storytelling.
Guest nikowwf Report post Posted July 2, 2003 i don't understand the logic behind not mentioning she will be in her first match so people cheer when she comes out. i dont see how that is fine storytelling. niko
Guest Trivia247 Report post Posted July 2, 2003 setting aside the its only women wrestling bullshit, for the last half year the only good wrestling on Raw WAS the womens wrestling...Kawada kicks, Handstand ranas Burning Hammers etc etc Anyway Kim's debut was horrible because they built her up for her debut and just threw her into a useless battleroyal that was really crappy, and she wasn't able to perform the ways we expected her to. she is being dubbed by the female version of rey rey, well the only atheletics she was able to pull off was a few good momentium moves, and her flexibility to hold onto the ropes. Guest Goodear Report post Posted July 2, 2003 i don't understand the logic behind not mentioning she will be in her first match so people cheer when she comes out. i dont see how that is fine storytelling. niko You seem to misunderstand, the fine storytelling could pop up when you're dealing with the aftermath of the battle royal and Kim's title reign. As far as the first match thing, I'm not sure I'm following you. Did you want Lillian to add the line 'making her WWE debut' to her introduction? Or did you want JR and The King to hype her more? Because they did mention her in passing when they ran down the card before the show came on the air.
Guest oldschoolwrestling Report post Posted July 2, 2003 They could have done something like started the Battle Royal and then after it started have her come down and join as if she wasn't invited. Then have her win the title.
Guest nikowwf Report post Posted July 2, 2003 I wanted them to hype her more. I wanted there to be an obvious buzz to the crowd that there was a new person coming. I wanted before the commerical break a blurb saying GAIL KIM IS NEXT. Rather, we got a few seconds of "huh, did they remix Victoria's music? What is this?" niko

Better yet, the match was god-awful. That's why the pop when she won wasn't that big. 1) Those video packages must have been good then, if no-one knew who she was. 2) So the pop had nothing to do with her being new and hardly anyone knowing anything about her. No-one knew who she was, and until she's built up no-one will care. And the women's wrestling 'non fans' who are interested in T&A only are the main reason women's wrestling can't improve. People need to stop being so sexist about it. Oh, and female version of Rey Rey? I smell an overexaggeration.
Internet Warfare 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2003 Sure her debut sucked but I couldnt wait any longer, the Womens division was boring and atleast now she can add some spice to it.
Guest Lemon Drop Kid Report post Posted July 2, 2003 On one hand, the women do work hard, have put on some quality action, and do need respect from the mass audience if the division is to improve... On the other hand, boobs are totally cool. A paradox of the highest order
Guest AndrewTS Report post Posted July 2, 2003 I agree 100%. And personally, I would have had Trish introduce her first and tag up with her and have her debut that way, with her cutting a few promos before wrestling first. It said she was coming soon in the last promo, but no "next week" or "in two weeks." The announcers didn't even seem to acknowledge the video packages. The video packages themselves didn't really show any moves or anything of note. Seems like they just decided to have her debut earlier in the day. It reeks of paper-napkin booking. Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2003 Shit, in my opinion her title win looked like a fluke. She hit two REAL moves and the rest of the time she was just getting kicked down. But the whole "Drop her hype video last week, give her debut little buildup, and expect the crowd to care about her" thing is even worse.
Guest AndrewTS Report post Posted July 2, 2003 Shit, in my opinion her title win looked like a fluke. She hit two REAL moves and the rest of the time she was just getting kicked down. Exactly, which is one of the reasons I hate Battle Royales. And if you're going to have a title change in a--what, two in a half minute Battle Royale?--then that's how it will look. Guest Showstoppa Icon Report post Posted July 2, 2003 why didnt they just have jazz issuing an open challenge, it wouldve seemed more pointful that way. Maybe even stretch it into 2 weeks with the first week gail accepts the challenge and cuts a promo and builds for a match next week. fuck wwe

Now, think they'll book an angle for the woman any further in advance? Eh-eh.
Guest Goodear Report post Posted July 2, 2003 What someone projected on another site and I bought for the whole Jazz knock out thing was that she came into the match injured and couldn't actually work a full match if she wanted to do so. So WWE sticks her in a battle royal so they can immediately get the strap off her without having a twenty second small package match or something.
Guest nikowwf Report post Posted July 3, 2003 I don't buy that Jazz was injured and no better scenario could be come up with than this. And Gail didn't have to win the title - the way she won it didn't help her so what was the point of giving it to her. niko
Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2003 Gail Kim gets hyped up (Internet site, WWE Magazine, WWE promos). It dies down. And the next thing you know...she's just...there. I agree with the Open Challenge, that would have worked a lot better. I was going for Victoria to win and they just give it to Gail just like that...man, fuck WWE. Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted July 3, 2003 For all the hype that she was getting on here like 2 months ago, having never seen her before, I was disapointed but I think that in Singles matches defending the title she could probably do better. I just hope they don't decide to call her Over the Top Rope Girl..
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted July 3, 2003 Who the fuck cares. This promotion fucked up KURT ANGLE'S return. And you guys are bitching because you didn't like it that some woman's wrestler you were excited about won the title in her first match? This is pathetic.
