One and Only Robert De Niro Thread

The "A Bronx Tale" thread really got me thinking. De Niro has had very few, if any at all, bad movies. The man is a pure genius. Any of you that feel the same way, feel free to talk about the man, the myth, The Living Legend:

YES!!!!!!!!DeNiro is FUCKING GOD! Anyway, I do agree with that statement. Sawthe first half of Taxi Driver last night. All I have ever seeen of it too cuz I got tired and i've never seen it before. ANYWAY, his movies are usually excellent. BTW, The Score is on sale at Best Buy right now for $9.99 on DVD.

We all know his good movies. Deacon was just bringing up his bad movies because no one in this thread was bringing up bad Deniro.

I don't think you can consider The Score as one of his great movies. It was a big disappointment more than anything, when you consider who was in it. It was another lazy performance from Norton which he turns in much too often.

There are plenty of actors who have been in a dozen good to great movies over the years; Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman; to name a few.

I'm not saying DeNiro isn't a great actor, but you don't have to suck his dick blindly. And I think it's good to examine some of his lesser films too. As I said above, I really liked Mad Dog and Glory, even though most don't. And I actually like the idea of King of Comedy and Jerry Lewis is subtley good in it, but DeNiro is atrocious. He seems to want to play Rupert as a vague character and not a real person and goes between serverly underacting to hammy 'hey, give me an Oscar' type moments.

I'm a big fan of De Niro's as well. I'm not gonna deny that he was in bad movies, but other movies make up for it like Deer Hunter and my favorite, Taxi Driver.

I think somebody should start a tournament type of thing just like that Schwarzenegger thread.

Exactly, there are a lot more also, like Jimmy Stewart, Orson Welles, etc...

I think the "cool factor" gets more people to think about De Niro however. He's a guy that even casual filmgoers go crazy over just at the mention of his name. I love the guy, he's simply outstanding, but he's not my favorite actor.

The Score was a fun movie. A bit predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. Put it under "good, but not great".

Anyways, I respectfully submit "15 Minutes" for consideration as a "bad DeNiro movie". He and Edward Burns phoned it in, and imo the best performance came from Oleg "the Russian Bear" Tatarkov(sp)...

I realize that De Niro didn't have ONLY great movies, but even his "stinkers" are pretty good. Decent at the worst, good at the best.

The Fan wasn't that bad. and I thought De Niro did a good job with the Rupert character in King of Comedy.

Many of De Niro's "bad" movies also have subpar supporting roles. Showtime (because we can all agree that Eddie Murphy is only a shell of what he used to be) and King of Comedy (Sandra Bernhardt) are at the top.

Men of Honor was good. I enjoyed it very much, plus Cuba wasn't bad either.

I found Bernhardt and Lewis to be genius in King of Comedy. They really nailed the quirks and idiosyncracies of the characters. As I said above, DeNiro was doing very much a charactericature and I didn't find him to really get into the meat of the character the way he could have. I honestly think the whole concept and characters was beyond him or he just didn't make the right choices to my way of thinking.

We should be talking about Robert Deniro's performances not movies starring him.

The supporting cast has nothing to do with Deniro or any actor giving a good performance. So even bad movies featuring good performances starring Deniro could be called good Deniro movies.

I haven't seen all of the movie's on Deacon's list, but Deniro himself was bad in the ones I've seen on that list.

That's my problem with The Score. It wasn't a horrible movie, but Deniro and Norton gave lackluster performances. It could've been bad material, but good actors like them should be able to overcome that.

Personally I feel that King of Comedy is an underated gem that featured three great performances by DeNiro, Bernhard, and a suprising Jerry Lewis. I don't know what y'all are smoking to be bashing King of Comedy.
