If the television title was brought back...

Recommended Posts

Guest Hass of Pain

The television title, one of my favorite forgotten belts. The championship that put Mike Rotunda --yesterdays Kurt Angle --on the map. The title that served as a launching pad for Sting and one of the greatest feuds of all time between he and the Great Muta. The title that almost made Rick Steiner a world champion, brought about the short and largely forgotten early 90's heel turn of his brother Scott and the title that Arn Anderson wore proudly. It was Steve Austin's first singles title in a major promotion and has since been worn by some of the greatest wrestlers that the sport has ever seen on route to becoming enormous stars.

While WWE is frantically bringing back the United States and Intercontinental Titles to serve as secondary belts I think a title along the lines of the television title would be even more instrumental to getting new stars over and giving fans a reason to care about someone in the lower card. John Cena, Booker T, Chris Benoit and others don't need a prop around their waste to get them over because they already are.

My question is, if the TV title made a comeback, who would you like to see hold it in each division. I think Rodney Mack would be the perfect candidate on the Raw side (or perhaps Maven) and Matt Hardy would be the ideal recipient on the Smackdown side. Your thoughts?

Now that you mention it, Mike Rotunda should wear it. Where is that auditing bastard anyway? I miss him.

That's my thing right there...

Why bring back a title that NEVER belonged to you (In WWE theory)...Just create the WWE T.V title as if it was an brand new one...

BUT NO MORE TITLES...Then ya might as well bring back the Hardcore or the Euro or the SIX MAN or the Junior Woman's...

ENOUGH!

4 TITLES on EACH company is good enough

Raw-World-IC-Tag-Woman

SD-WWE=US=Tag-CW

No more...and again...

Raw should have the U.S title and Smackdown the I.C title (since it's more INTERNATIONAL there and they already got the other wwe true titles)

We don't need another title. Then A-Train or Rodney Mack would be a champ. Thats not right.

I'd rather them bring back the 6-man tag titles than the TV title. It would give them the chance to put more guys on TV.

They could have them switch between the two brands at the mixed brand PPV's to keep things fresh, and between Raw and Smackdown there are enough "factions" now to keep it fresh. (Evolution, FBI, Dudleys, Taker & APA) Or use it as an excuse to make new factions (e.g. Cena & Haas/Benjamin)

I don't think there should be a TV title. But if their was, Maven should get it. After all, he learned how to be a wrestler on TV :P

No more belts.

They have a world title and a #2 title on each show, not to mention tag belts, a cruiser belt, and a chick belt.

There just isn't enough tv time to support all these titles.

If they keep bringing back titles just to have Billy Gunn hold them, then we are better off with wrestlers feuding over a shampoo commercial.

What I was actually saying was that the Television title should be brought back INSTEAD of the United States or Intercontinental title, preferrably instead of the IC title because half of the guys who I would like to see compete for the TV title on the Smackdown side are already going after the CW title.

I agree that bringing back the IC and TV title would be silly given Raw only has two hours a week and four other major titles up for grabs. Let's face it, having a United States title won't make Booker T, Rob Van Dam or anyone else THAT much more over than they already are. Maybe when a guy like Batista comes back he can benefit from it, but for now it just seems like a way to save face for all of the people The H's has buried.

I think the TV title would be a cool concept in that it could be defended on TV every single week with ten-fifteen minute time limit matches. When you look at when the TV title was most effective, more of it's holders went on to become major names than those like Luger, Hansen, Hayes and Windham. With a shorter, set time limit, perhaps guys like Maven, Chris Nowinski, Stevie Richards, Rodney Mack and others could actually put on some good, fast paced matches with a race-against-time feel that would give Raw the something it so desperately needs to stand out from Smackdown. Lord knows the women's division isn't doing it.

I agree that there are enough belts right now. But if it would be coming back they should have some unknown guy win it almost as a fluke... make a new star out of nowhere.

Agreed that there are enough belts, but I say give it to Rhyno.

If they bring back the TV title, they should put it on a heel like Regal and have him milk the 10 minute time limit rule.

Sounds great! Then we'll call Raw the Muddasheeap, change the entrance to a big computer-chip wall with sliding doors, as all the while that Disco Inferno keeps trying to get that darned leg hold.

My First memories of the TV title was in the NWA in 87, when LAZERTRON aka Hector Guerrero few years shy of the gobbering gooker wore it.

I don't think I want it back.

How different is that than belts worn by David Flair and Chyna?

I think the best part was him defending the title on WCW Satutrday Night it's last few airings. They actually tried to do storylines.

Personally I think one of WCW's biggest screw ups was turning Saturday Night into a crap show. I use to love it.

Oh yeah, Saturday Night in '96 or '99 is better than Raw now. Reasons why:

1. Dusty Rhodes here on DA MUDDASHEEAP! Goin to DA PAY WINDA!

2. Disco Inferno and "The Leg Hold." Perhaps you remember this: Disco would lose every week, but often say something about how one day, he'll hit his leg hold and that'll change everything. Nothing came of it until he started finally attempting a leglock, which never worked. Then one week he brought instructions on paper. But when he went for the hold, he forgot the instructions and didn't know what to do. Then the next week, he remembered to hold on to the paper, but when he went for the leg hold, THE PAPER WAS UPSIDE DOWN! Then the next week was a truly momenous occasion. I even remember the jobber: Trevor Allen. Disco nailed The Leg Hold and won! However, I don't recall what exactly the leg hold was, and I don't believe it was ever used again. Screw the nWo, THIS was THE angle of '96.

Downfalls:

It was in 1999 that Mark Jindrak debuts on WCWSN, under the persona of get this...A VIOLENT COLLEGE BASKETBALL PLAYER.

The impression I had of the TV title was of being the WCW-version of the Euro title, i.e. #3 belt.

A title that lower midcarders fight for.

Except in the WWE, that tends to apply to women, cruisers and JTTS.

Not much point bringing back a title when no one's going to fight for it.

[sarcasm]Unless... winner of the TV title gets to job to Triple H every PPV![/sarcasm]
