Guest Nanks Report post Posted July 10, 2003 G'day mates, We're a bit sheltered down here to the good, alternative kind of rock. Now, before I get drowned in a gushing flood of unheard of, Indie love, I'm not looking for music the guy down the road from you has been peddling at the local, just something good that I won't have heard of down here that I'll be able to track down on CD if it's good enough. No old shit. Keep in mind my CD collection currently features bands like: Metallica, RATM, Linkin Park, P.O.D, Staind, Puddle of Mudd, Live, The Offspring, Green Day. C'mon people, help me expand my horizons here, in return I'll try and point you towards a few Aussie bands you might like. Cheers
Guest Memphis Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Such as Grinspoon, maybe?
Guest Nanks Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Perhaps them. Maybe Powderfinger. Maybe Machine Gun Fellatio. Maybe Grandville. Maybe Palladium. There are many Aussie bands I'd recommend people d/l a song or two from. I take it you know Grinners. Opinion?
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Check out the new Type O Negative album. It's called Life is Killing Me and should be available wherever you get cds that aren't normally available in Australia. I'd also check out Snot. The cd's a little older, but wouldn't qualify as "old shit" whatever that may be...It's rap mixed with rock, only actually good, and way better than the latter two RATM albums. Guest Nanks Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Give me a couple of singles to d/l so I can check them out.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Type O- You'd probably dig "Black No. 1" Which is a different cd, but still good. Off of the new one, go with the title track, "Life is Killing Me." For Snot, go with "The Box" and "My Balls." I can almost guarantee you'll dig Snot, judging from the cds you posted above. Type O is either love it or hate it.
Guest Nanks Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Was not in the least bit impressed with Snot's My Balls. Song just didn't go anywhere. Vocals was nothing but screaming. Don't know why you thought I'd be into that. Type O's Life Is Killing Me was a cool shit though. I really like those vocals. I got the impression from the name that they'd be a bit hard for my tastes, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Is the rest of that CD fairly similar in style/hardness?? I am a fan of their recent INXS cover, 'Don't Change' and some of their newer music has entertained me. Other than that, they arn't really my style. If I wanted to hear their genre performed well, I'd listen to Nirvana. M
Guest Nanks Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Yes, well that explains it then doesn't it. I went to their concert at Festival Hall a month or so ago. It was senners. The "Don't Change" cover is a winner. As is most things INXS did. What Aussie bands would you add to that hastily thought of list. Outside of the well-known ones like 'Chair
Guest godthedog Report post Posted July 10, 2003 ween - 'chocolate and cheese' if you want a sample, download "voodoo lady," "the HIV song" and "spinal meninghitis (got me down)." and don't just download one, get at least 2, to get an idea of the variety on the album. velvet underground - 'velvet underground and nico' download "venus in furs" and you should be sold on it IMMEDIATELY. if that doesn't work, download "heroin" and "run run run." ALL of Type O's vocals are like that. I've actually got a review for the album written up, and am planning on posting it pretty soon. Bottom line, if you like that song, you'll like pretty much everything they've ever did, aside from maybe Slow, Deep, and Hard, where they use some old school NYC punk influence. Guest Nanks Report post Posted July 10, 2003 (edited) Yeah, I know Ween. I'm very underwhelmed. I've seen this Velvet Underground mentioned about the place. I'm Kazaa-ing for them presently. EDIT: UGGGHHH Strewth mate, I said I don't want any of that artsy, indie bullshit. My God, what did I do to deserve being exposed to that??? I have been aurally abused. I don't want to be lulled into some kind of off-key trance, I want to be entertained. Mate, how can you listen to that tripe? Genuinely one of the worst pieces of "music" I have ever had the misfortune to be exposed to. Thank you for trying though. We're 1 for 4 thus far here people. Impress me. Next. B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2003 While we're on the Type O topc, DL the following: "Angry Inch" "Be My Druidess" "We Hate Everyone" "I Don't Want to Be Me" "World Coming Down" "All Hallow's Eve" Listen to Devin Townsend as well. Whether it be Strapping Young Lad, Ocean Machine, or the devin townsend Band, listen to his stuff. Devy is genius.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 10, 2003 oh heavens no..let's not listen to music that requires thought. How could anyone possibly enjoy art? That's not entertaining... Perhaps you should listen to some..well, what it is you normally listen to. Only add some more Avril.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Is Ocean Machine or Dev's solo stuff better than SYL? Keep in mind I'd give SYL's new one a 4/10. How are they different?
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Ocean Machine is FAR ore relaxing than SYL, as is his solo stuff, with the exception of Physicist. Physicist is pretty heavy overall, but there are a couple melow tracks. I haven't listened to it for sometime, I need to knock the dust off that one. Terria is very atmospheric. I listen to it whenever I need a release. My favorite Devin album is still Infinity. "Christeen" is such a great song, as is "Bad Devil." "Devil" is like a waltz on hallucenigenics. Very cool, to say the least. Then there's "Noisy Pink Bubbles", which is like porno music Devy-style.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 10, 2003 you know what. you need Alice In Chains and Mad Season
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 10, 2003 So they're both more mellow then? Sounds ballad-laden. and red is correct, EVERYONE needs some AiC.
Guest Zack Malibu Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Stabbing Westward: Shame What Do I Have To Do The Thing I Hate Wasted Nothing I Don't Believe Sleep Evanescence: Bring Me To Life Whisper Tourniquet (make sure you get the actual album versions, as there are some rough demos/originals floating on Kazaa) Orgy: Platinum Opticon Stitches Fiction (Dreams in Digital)
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2003 So they're both more mellow then? Sounds ballad-laden. and red is correct, EVERYONE needs some AiC. I wouldn't say ballad-laden, but they are more mellow. The last rack on Ocean Machine is a ballad, but is followed by the longest, loudest, most abrasive scream you'll ever hear. And yes, everyone does need some AIC.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted July 10, 2003 I'm going to do something weird. I'm NOT going to recommend Shadows Fall. Why? Because if Nanks hasn't checked them out already, despite my heavy pimpage of them for the past year and a half, then fuck 'em. STUCK MOJO (Rap/Metal/Hardcore/Funk) "Stuck Mojo Funk" "Not Promised Tomorrow" "Give War A Chance" "Rising" "Southern Pride" Megadeth (Thrash Metal/Heavy Metal) "Mechanix" (since you're into Metallica, you'll notice that it sounds like "The Four Horsemen," and that's because the main riff was written by Dave Mustaine when he was still in Metallica) "Trust" "Symphony Of Destruction" "Hangar 18" "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" Black Label Society (Heavy Metal) "Bored To Tears" "Stillborn" (currently actually getting radio play, mainly due to the guest appearance of Ozzy on vocals) "Just Killing Time" "Demise Of Sanity" (heavy recommendation) "Graveyard Disciples"
rising up out of the back seat-nuh 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2003 I'd like to reccomend something, but I'm not sure you'd liike anything I do... Try some Andrew W K, such as Party Hard.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Black Label Society (Heavy Metal) "Bored To Tears" "Stillborn" (currently actually getting radio play, mainly due to the guest appearance of Ozzy on vocals) "Just Killing Time" "Demise Of Sanity" (heavy recommendation) "Graveyard Disciples" I also HIGHLY recommend BLS. Here's a few other tunes that just might tickle your fancy: "13 Years of Grief" "Counterfeit God" "Mass Murder Machine"- This song has such a KILLER groove "Battering Ram" "Doomsday Jesus" "Superterrorizer"
Guest The Superstar Report post Posted July 10, 2003 Avril Lavigne - "Sk8er Boi" Can't go wrong with that.

Perhaps you should listen to some..well, what it is you normally listen to. Only add some more Avril. Don't give me that shit Agent, I did think during that Velvet Underground song, and all I could think was, "Fuck this guy is singing off key and he needs to tune his instruments". It's not a matter of not wanting to think when I'm listening to music, but that was just crap. Just because I don't like that band, it seems pretty fuckin' ridiculous that I'm immediately thrown in the Avril lover bin. I do happen to like Losing Grip, but frankly the rest of it shits me up the wall. Now, I have some tedious downloading to do to catch up to the rest of this thread because I had to sleep. I know quite a few of the bands mentioned here. So I'll go for some Black Label Society, Alice In Chains (Recommend a song???), Devin Townsend & Shadows Fall (Recommend a song??). Chances are I've already heard of whatever I'm not trying. I know Evansence for example, currently in the process of finding money to buy their album as well as about 4 others. I saw Stabbing Westward live last year because they supported for Live, they were cool. Everyone knows Megadeth and I've heard some Stuck Mojo. Cheers all, will report back shortly
