Ah, 1_inch_punch, are you aware that The Vines are Australian?! They're pretty big down here, not sure where you got that from!! I was considering getting Highly Evolved, but there are too many required CDs before them. B. Brian Brunzell - I listened to Devin Townsend - Material. Pretty cool. Different. I think I'll check out some more stuff of his. Nice one. CoreyLazarus - Yeah, I checked out Demise of Sanity. Perhaps the quality wasn't great, but I wasn't really blown away. It was good, but I probably liked Type O & Devin better. I listened to The First Noble Truth by Shadows Fall, and I liked the kinda punky guitar, but the unintelligable death metal vocals just wrecked it. Pity really. Cheers though. Kotz - Body Parts was a bit of alright. Pretty all over the place. Not sure I could listen to a full CD of it. Good enough for government work, to borrow a phrase. Oh and by the way, something I've been meaning to tell you for a while, to add to your fandom, Kylie is really cool in person, my best mate's dad is her manager. She's just as hot in person also. Well, I promised I'd throw out a few Aussie tracks for people to give a try to. Don't know if any of these bands have tried to break into the US, but here's a couple for now. If I'm asked for more I'm more than happy to recommend more. Guest Nanks Report post Posted July 11, 2003 It was seen as pretty odd for The Vines to get big in the US and then come home after that, but I wouldn't say we turned on them. Highly Evolved sold well down here, they played Big Day Out and got a great reaction. I'd say there would be some in the Australian Music Industry who would have been incredibly jealous they'd cracked the US without working through Australia first though. VU (and ween for that matter) is very much an acquired taste, and is probably one of the ten most revered bands in the world now. they were always trying new things, and the stuff that sounds so different normally takes some getting used to. but it grows on you, and is ultimately far more rewarding than songs that are enjoyable to listen to simply because they're catchy (limp bizkit, et al). it requires some time and effort, but it IS worth it. an easier way to get into them would probably be to start with their last album, 'loaded', and work backwards. it doesn't sound "artsy" or experimental at all, it just sounds like a really good rock band, and the focus is almost entirely on lou reed's songwriting (which is some of the best ever). reed's sing-song vocals, like bob dylans, don't technically sound good, but once you get down to it they ARE emotionally brilliant. Different strokes..... i never said it was only good because it was different. i'm saying the sound takes some getting used to. experimenting is only half of the equation, and the other half is actually getting the experiment right; and most music fans & bands would agree that the velvets did indeed get it right. you listened to it once (if i understand correctly), then immediately dismissed it because it didn't fit your current definition of good music. i'm saying give it a chance, and you may be surprised & find your definition of good music can change. music that's atonal or abrasive can still be beautiful, and the best music almost NEVER sounds good on the first 2 or 3 listens, and to call it crap after that much or less is lazy and ignorant. it's like turning a movie off after the first 10 minutes, your judgment is skewed. ask around on the board, i doubt you'll find anyone familiar with the velvets and not like them. this is not just me spouting off pretentiously about how great this band is just because they sang off key, trust me. like i said, start from 'loaded' and work backwards if you think it's too weird, but don't just blow it off, cause it really is great music. I'm not the biggest fan of the vocal style, although, once again it's probably a little distorted through the computer. I like the guitar lines and drumwork though. Definitely worth more d/l-ing. However... Ugly includes great songs like "Don't You (Forget about me)" "Other Side of the River" "I regret" "Lost at 22" "Drained" "Unstable" "Fears" The rest of the album doesn't work for me... 7 good-Great tracks out of 12=Great Album The other songs aren't HORRIBLE but just not at the same level. As for Soul Searching Sun Aside from 3 great Caputo penned songs "Heroin Dreams" "My Mind is Dangerous" "Angry Tree" the rest of the Album can suck my dick... The rest is Robert penned/Cowritten and you can CLEARLY tell the difference and it's not a good thing. After you Set your mind free and embrace the darkness of Life of Agony... Search for the Ultra-Rare Keith Caputo solo Album "Died Laughing". He shines as a Solo artist esp. with "Honeycomb" "New York City" "Selfish" as the stand out tracks... It's completely different from the Dark shady feel that LOA presents and is poppy but in the good sense... New York City and Honeycomb are great examples of keeping the same writing style but making a little lighter... If you liked L.O.A because of the Music and not the lyrics and the vocals then you might not dig The solo work...since it doesn't put an heavy emphasis on the music and just let's the sting of Caputo's words float in the air crashing you into a dark deep yet positive void.
