The 2001 WWF PPV Collection

Recommended Posts

Guest Hitman Jebus

I have to agree with the ** rating for Rock vs. Angle...

*ducks tomatoes*

I admit I'm a hard grader, if something hits **** it better awesome.

I didn't see the match live on PPV but heard great things about it so when I saw the tape last year for sale at HMV for like 10$, you bet your ass I bought it.

Great PPV overall with an overrated main event...kick and punch, kick and punch, etc. Basically, a Rock match / WWE Style main event brawl (I love the Rock but rarely does he get to ****, IMO)

People watch it again...I don't get the big deal.

I've watched the match many times- It definetley deserves it's ****+ rating that people give out.

Rock makes Angle look like a million bucks throughout (puts him over more then anyone else has) and aside from the stupid Big Show run in- I don't see any flaws with it

The finish was a little messed up, but I blame that on Hebner.

the 2001 rumble is my all-time favorite ppv. wrestling-wise, it's got about 4 minutes of bad stuff (chyna/ivory), and ALL the rest is good to awesome.

Angle has had precisely one match in his career I'd consider to be objectively better than the No Way Out match with Rock, and thats the Rumble match this year. For my part, I actually prefer the Rock match.

What about Austin vs. Angle at Summerslam 01?

That's my pick for Angle's best ever. Awesome storytelling in it.

I'm liking the critiques...I knew the Rock/Angle rating would draw attention, but I didn't think it was that great. To the guy who said do I go out at night...rarely. No one is ever around and I've already dubbed this as the worst summer ever. Anyhoo, here we are (You all will have a field day of how I rated this one):

Backlash; April 21; Chicago

Buh Buh Ray, D'Von, & Spike Dudley vs. X-Pac, Justin Credible, & Albert: **1/2

Raven vs. Rhyno (Hardcore Title): ***

Chris Jericho vs. William Regal (Dutchess Of Queensbury Rules Match): **3/4

Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle (30 Minute Ultimate Submission Match): ****

Shane McMahon vs. Big Show (Last Man Standing Match): ***

Christian vs. Eddie Guerrero vs. Matt Hardy (European Championship): ***

Steve Austin & HHH vs. Undertaker & Kane (WWF, Intercontinental, & Tag Team Titles): ***3/4

Overall: Thumbs up

Tonight it's Judgment Day, so stay tuned and keep it comin'...

How come you're not defending your ratings??

Oh and Big Show v. Shane O Mac is better then Rock v. Angle?

I know star ratings are subjective but-

You're an idiot

Thank you?

I just didn't like Rock vs. Angle...thier No Mercy match was much better. There were some key points I didn't like such as Rock was in an ankle lock for about a minute and didn't sell it afterwards; Big Show's pointless run-in (Complete with music) and Hebner's fuckup. I never really liked this PPV when I saw it live either. (Not to mention that I predicted the HHH/Austin match exactly, which kinda killed it for me some more) As for the 1/2* for Chyna/Ivory I, I appreciated Ivory's selling. I enjoyed the TLC II more than their other efforts, they just seemed to take it up a notch, even if there are scarse attempts at grabbing the belts. With the Benoit/Jericho one, again, I liked it plenty, but ***1/2 seems just about right to me. In my opinion, those two have had better, also. (Backlash '00 & SummerSlam '00) Anything else? Although I know "the biz" and whatnot, reading stuff on the 'net for about three years, I still don't consider myself a smark or anything, though I am sometimes critical of the storylines, I'm pretty much a mark for everything including watching and rating the matches, so it doesn't surprize me that so many here think my ratings are too high or too low.

Big Show's run in doesn't have any effect on the match though. Hebner's fuckup doesn't really takeaway from the match either- if anything it makes Angle look stronger.

Their No Mercy match shouldn't really dicate what you think of a match.

The Backlash 2000 Benoit v. Jericho has an utterly stupid finish that kills the match. The Summerslam match is way too rushed and is not given enough time to shine.

Because I liked it and it wasn't that bad.

And Shane'O did the mega bump to end all mega bumps.

Royal Rumble; January 21; New Orleans

Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit (Intercontinental Title; Ladder Match) ***1/2

Backlash; April 21; Chicago

Steve Austin & HHH vs. Undertaker & Kane (WWF, Intercontinental, & Tag Team Titles): ***3/4

Now this is just my opinion, but there's no way that the tag match is better than the ladder match. I know star ratings are subjective, but this just boggles my mind.

I liked that main event a lot. It was a nice little brawl well put together and well executed. (Albeit a little long; 25 minutes)

NO FUCKING WAY!

And also... X-Factor vs. The Dudleys was better than Rock vs. Angle too?

This is fun.

Backlash; April 21; Chicago

Buh Buh Ray, D'Von, & Spike Dudley vs. X-Pac, Justin Credible, & Albert: **1/2

*1/2. What was so semi-special here?

Raven vs. Rhyno (Hardcore Title): ***

I'd go ***1/2. Best Hardcore Title match EVER. Hands down.

Chris Jericho vs. William Regal (Dutchess Of Queensbury Rules Match): **3/4

THIS rating is insanely high, IMO. I hated this match.

Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle (30 Minute Ultimate Submission Match): ****

So you dis Rock vs. Angle for shoddy selling and then give this **** with it's very flawed psychology (especially for thse two)? Huh, odd. I mean, sure, this is a fine ***1/4 match, but with THIS gimmick, these two should have done better. Way too many spots in the match where I was like "What the FUCK was he doing that for? That makes no sense."

Shane McMahon vs. Big Show (Last Man Standing Match): ***

* for the bump. That's about it.

Christian vs. Eddie Guerrero vs. Matt Hardy (European Championship): ***

No way in Hell is this as good as the Hardcore title match earlier.

Steve Austin & HHH vs. Undertaker & Kane (WWF, Intercontinental, & Tag Team Titles): ***3/4

You were entertained by this? I was quite bored, personally. Has the dubious distinction of being the worst WWF PPV Main Event of '01, IMO. Austin vs. Jericho at Vengeance may have been technically a slightly worse match, but given the circumstances and the importance of the match, it's far more captivating.

Overall: Thumbs up

A big step down from the previous 3 months, but still a thumbs up. A bad PPV back then, it would be a pretty good PPV today, sadly.

Here we go again, though this time I think I'll get more agreements than before.

Judgment Day; May 20; Sacramento

William Regal vs. Rikishi: 3/4*

Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit (2/3 Falls for Angle's medals): ***

Test vs. Rhyno vs. Big Show (Hardcore Championship): **

Chyna vs. Lita (Women's Championship): *

HHH vs. Kane (Intercontinental Championship; Chain Match): **

Tag Team Turmoil: **1/2

Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker (WWF Championship; No Holds Barred): **1/2

Overall: Thumbs in the middle; leaning down

Beware of BIAS~! in the next 3 PPV's...I enjoyed them thoroughly at the time, was at one (King of the Ring) and my favorite match is on another (SummerSlam; A PPV I was into like non before or since)

William Regal vs. Rikishi: 3/4*

Regal bleeds from the forehead, the match is short and sweet, and Regal does the greatest facial expression ever. Too low.

Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit (2/3 Falls for Angle's medals): ***

This match is MUCH better then the Backlash match except for the shitty finish. The ladder match is portion is terrific. Too low.

HHH vs. Kane (Intercontinental Championship; Chain Match): **

A very intense brawl with lots of blood and lots of awesome spots with the chain. Too low

And here I was thinking I was the only person who thought Kane/HHH pre corpse fucking with the chain gimmick was pretty decent.

William Regal vs. Rikishi: 3/4*

Now I wouldn't go TOO high here, Bob. It was the worst match on the card besides Chyna vs. Lita. *

Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit (2/3 Falls for Angle's medals): ***

***1/2. Slightly better than Backlash, yes, but only slightly. They did much better at Mania and have done much better since.

Test vs. Rhyno vs. Big Show (Hardcore Championship): **

About right.

Chyna vs. Lita (Women's Championship): *

DUD, thank you, drive through. Sayonara, Chyna.

HHH vs. Kane (Intercontinental Championship; Chain Match): **

I surprisingly liked this match too. **1/2.

Tag Team Turmoil: **1/2

I don't remember this one at all besides the final match and also that this was Dean Malenko's last PPV match.

Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker (WWF Championship; No Holds Barred): **1/2

About right. Not their best, not their worst.

**Fun Fact** Austin vs. Undertaker happened at the May '97, May '99, and May '01 PPVs. Thankfully we didn't get it at JD this year, as the trend would indicate.

Overall: Thumbs in the middle; leaning down

Yeah, this was disappointing considering the first few PPVs.
