Official MLB Trade Deadline 2003 Topic

Well I'm STILL waiting for the Astros to aquire a starting pitcher. I'll take my chances with our offense (even the black holes in the lineup that are Ausmus and Everett [to a lesser extent]) but I'm nervous having Ron Villone as a starter. Still a lot of talk about Jeff Weaver and Ponson, but I'm not terribly optimistic.

I wouldn't sweat it. St. Louis only has 1 real starter, and the Cubs are playing .500 ball. Once you reach the postseason, you don't need a fifth starter anyway. I'd worry more about plugging that black hole at catcher.

Braves have the most to give for Ponson. Weaver might not be a bad fit for the Astros. He was pretty good in Detroit, he just might not pitch well in the big city.

It's time for the Twins to look at trading some players.

I'd like to see the Cards trade Steve Kline for Jeff Weaver. The Yankees would love the relief help, and Cardinals' pitching coach Dave Duncan has a good track record.

You forget though...the Astros play in Homeron Field not the Astrodome anymore so I don't know if that place is a good fit for any pitcher. When you think about it Weaver would be best fit back in Detroit.

The Astros should try to get Jeff Suppan. I imagine he would be pretty cheap and he is 29th in the league in Ground ball to fly ball ratio. To steal a quote from Moneyball, "It remains impossible to hit a ground ball over the wall."

Does anyone has ESPN insider and can tell me what it says about the Marlins going after J.D. Drew? On the ESPN mainpage today it says Marlins are interested in Drew, but it's an insider article.

I would officially go nuts with excitement if they got him. Better him than Mondesi from the Yanks.

Well al I don't think they're too worried about catcher, although personally I am. I like Ausmus as a person but man he might as well be swinging a toothpick at the plate. And his defense may be pretty good and he may call a good game, but he needs to show ANYTHING at bat. However, I don't see the Astros picking up someone like Kendall ($40 something mill over 4 years) to soldify the position. I don't know who else might be available for a reasonable price.

As for pitching I'd personally take Suppan. It seems like the front office is looking more at Weaver though. I'm not sold on him, but I'd give him a shot if we got him.

Edit: Crap I can't believe this is how I spent my 1000th post. Well in honor of the occassion I'd like to say.

Ahem...

FUCK HHH AND THE MCMAHONS! PUT SOMEONE OVER YOU ROIDED UP PIECE OF CRAP!

Thank you.

Do they move Encarnacion to left?

Not to mention that Miguel Cabrera has been playing hella better lately, including his 2B and HR last night accounting for all 3 Marlins runs.

They have Hollandsworth to back up in the outfield too.

The thinking in acquiring Weaver would the better future potential. This season, I'd rather have Suppan. Sure Weaver might turn it around, but you don't know. Suppan's much more proven this the season and gives the Astros a better 3rd starter.

Breaking Trade News:

The Houston Astros added a veteran righthander to their bullpen Tuesday, acquiring Dan Miceli from the New York Yankees for a player to be named or cash.

This is the fourth team for Miceli this season and ninth of his career. He is 1-3 with one save and a 4.02 ERA in 34 combined games with Colorado, Cleveland and the Yankees this season.

The 32-year-old Miceli was 0-2 with a 5.66 ERA in 14 games for the Rockies, who released him on May 11. He joined the Indians on May 15 and was acquired by the Yankees on June 25 along with outfielder Karim Garcia in exchange for a player to be named

Suppan will hopefully improve his second half in 2003 after going 2-10 with a 6.65 ERA in the second half of 2002 with the Royals.

Word on the street is the Cardinals don't have enough prospects to acquire Jeff Suppan, so a big deal could go through where they send JD Drew to the Marlins, Pittsburgh sends Suppan to the Cardinals, and Florida sends a package of prospects to the Pirates.

More Pirates rumors--Padres want the Pirates to pay $21 million of the $42 million left on Jason Kendall's contract for a big deal to go through sending Giles and Kendall to San Diego with San Diego giving the Pirates Sean Burroughs, a young third baseman with big potential, and some more prospects.

Alot of ESPN insider comes from local newspapers. Look for Miami papers online. You might find something there.

Dan Miceli! Whew there's the move that'll set 'em over the top! Oh well I guess it'll help a bullpen that's been used way too much this season.

Well not that Roy Oswalt's out again with his bad groin *childish giggling* I think another trade just became more likely for the Astros.

Y'know, as a Jays fan, I'd give up Delgado to get ANYONE in the bullpen who could pitch. Fuckers blew another save tonight against Tampa, giving them (I believe) 14 for the season. FOURTEEN blown saves, that's fucking insane. The Jays lose in the most heartbreaking ways possible, they take a lead, lose it, get it back, lose it again, and then make a comeback that isn't quite enough. It's so fucking depressing.

I'm pretty surprised that MISTAH Sabean has failed to do anything yet. I mean, he's known for deals on the 31st, but I haven't even heard RUMORS...Giants need a fifth starter...

Ditto for Mr. Beane...

White Sox aquire Ps Scott Schoenweis and Doug Nickle from the Angels for Ps Gary Glover, Scott Dunn and Tim Bittner.

Funny how at the beginning of the season the Boston pen was a joke. Got to give Epstein credit for going after what he needs. And if they get a starter like rumored that will throw Wakefield or Mendoza back as well.

And the disgrace of the season could come from Cincy if Gammons is for real. He was saying the rumor is the Reds are going to trade Jose Guillen. If they do they need to just implode and restart. Trading Guillen defeats the whole purpose of rebuilding, he's young, he's cheap, and he is their best player this year. The only excuse to trade him would be to get his peak value with high level prospect and very good major league players. I seriously doubt either of those would happen.

That said, if he is on the market I hope the Phils go after him. It is too late in the season to keep hoping for a Burrell turn around.

You ABSOLUTELY trade Guillen. His best season before this year was 2000, when he hit .253/.340/.430. This year has FLUKE written all over it. His walk total hasn't gone up either. You give me a choice between him and Burrell, and I'll take Burrell.

GREAT trade for Boston tonight, Hopefully they dont get stupid and go throwing Kim back into the rotation.

HUGE night for my boy Muelle too, 3 HR's, 2 of which were Grand Slams!

I agree this year has fluke written all over it, but they are going to get nothing back for him according to reports so take the gamble that it isn't. If he is going to be a free agent after the year, then you keep him and get the draft picks for him when he signs somewhere else.

And I would take Burrell over him for the next 5 years, but this slump is killing the whole year. Get Guillen so you have some production this year and start fresh with Burrell next year.

What did Jeff Weaver do or say that made Gammons so mad. I only caught a little bit of a segment on baseball tonight, and Gammons generally seemed upset.

I don't know. I only caught the tail end as well. I think somebody did something to cost him a run and the game and he threw a hissy fit. That was the most I could gather. Gammons seemed to be pissed at Reynolds for defending Weaver even.

From two nights ago

Jeff Weaver took a 3-0 lead and a two-hitter into the seventh before he walked Trot Nixon and hit Bill Mueller with one out. Chris Hammond (2-1) relieved and Varitek homered over the Green Monster as a disgusted Weaver threw a towel in the Yankees dugout.

Never mind, the Sox trade's been mentioned already.

The Sox bullpen gets better and better.
