X-Men

Recommended Posts

Guest drdrainoscott

I used to collect X-Men books many years ago but I stopped around the time of the Onslaught storyline. So a couple weeks ago I was in NYC and my brother and I walked into a comic store and I was checking out the X-titles. So as my title says, what the hell happened to them? The storylines don't really make sense with what I was used to, and X-Force was completly different people and stuff. I was completly blown away by what happened to the X-Men family. Anyway, is there anyone that can shed some light on what has happened since I've been gone, or maybe lead me to a website?

thanks

I stopped reading X-Men about the same time as you did, and only now have picked up Uncanny XMen again. XForce has been turned into the arty wannabe indie title about superheroics, and I really think it sucks complete ass.

I have a couple of X questions as well, since I started reading again.

1...Why did Beast turn into a lion?

2...Why does Prof. X walk?

3...Isn't Cyclops dead?

4...How'd the Xmansion become a kiddie school? I though it was much cooler being a fake hideout for mutants, but apparently I'm wrong.

Eh, I like it. Maybe it's just me. It's an interesting take on mutants other then "MUTANTS ARE FEARED AND MUST BE HUNTED".

On to your questions.

1...Why did Beast turn into a lion?

It was some sort of secondary Mutation. Don't remember seeing him change in panel, but that's how they described it.

2...Why does Prof. X walk?

His body was basically destroyed by his evil twin Cassandra Nova. He was healed by the X-Man Xen (him with the star for a head) and regained the use of his legs.)

3...Isn't Cyclops dead?

He's alive, and one of their better characters now. Can't say how he was brought back, because I think Claremont was writing, and Claremont can give me a headache sometimes.

4...How'd the Xmansion become a kiddie school? I though it was much cooler being a fake hideout for mutants, but apparently I'm wrong.

They got rid of Generation X (for the life of me I can't remember how they did this) so they needed someway to get new mutants. I like it as you got more interesting character to bounce the regular cast off of.

Thanx for filling me in. I can see how the school can help bring in more characters, like that nurse chick that wants to get with both Havok and Iceman.

1...Why did Beast turn into a lion?

Because Frank Quitely wanted to draw him as one.

The official explaination is that Beast mutated into one as a result of a secondary mutation (which is fancy talk Morrison came up with to explain why certain mutants have more than one powers).

Claremont (pissed off that Morrison called dibs on Beast so he couldn't use him in Xtreme X-Men) came up with an alternate explaination, that the walking plot device Sage evolved Beast into a lion in order to save his life after he got stabbed and punched to near death by a mutant named Vargas...

2...Why does Prof. X walk?

Xorn, the new team healer healed Xavier while he was possessed by the psychic energy entity Cassandra Nova in an attempt to help the X-Men switch Xavier back into his body

3...Isn't Cyclops dead?

He was possessed by Apocalypse, who's pressence made it impossible for any teep to sense him save for Jean (who has a special telepathic link with her husband). Jean and Cable freed Scott from Poccy and returned him to the team during a throw-away mini-series written by Joseph Harris (writer of the short lived Bishop series) which is notably only do to the variant cover Marvel released for the third issue that has Jean and a mutated into Apocalypse Scott naked and humping each other...

4...How'd the Xmansion become a kiddie school? I though it was much cooler being a fake hideout for mutants, but apparently I'm wrong.

It happened inbetween X-Men #113 and #114. It's one of the better ideas that Morrison has come up with, turning the school into an actual school with Emma Frost running it for Xavier....

For all the crap he's written in X-treme X-Men, I like Claremont's explanation better. Besides which, wouldn't Beast's cat-like look be more of a tertiary (quadrary?) mutation, since Hank turned into a furry grey beast when he injested a serum of his devising, and THEN turned into the bouncing blue Beast that we all know and love?

They got rid of Generation X (for the life of me I can't remember how they did this)

Chamber got drafted by Xavier to join the X-Men and with Banshee becoming a useless drunk and White Queen having her inner bitch restored after avenging Synch's death at the hands of her sister but way of shooting her sis dead, the rest of the team reluctantly left the school. Husk went off to help the tree-huggers, Skin and Jubilee went to LA (where they tried to break into Hollywood), M went home to check up on her family after the Weapon X team attacked her parents and stole the visiting Leech, and Emma got dragged off into a helicopter by two unnamed X-Men (presumably Cannonball and Iceman) and sent to Genosha to teach and look after Magneto.

thanks, but unfortunatly this has all just made me more curious about what is going on. Does anyone know of a website that has information that could help me out. I know there was at least an old site that had the updated rosters of each team. Anyone know it?

And how did Colosus die.  DId they give that poor man any type of good luck before it ended for him.

Let's put it this way, he got a better send-off than Psylockes...

Mystique (driven insane do to some nasty time traveling where she found out that her lover Destiny help the Government kidnap mutant babies and experiment on them and being forced to kill Graymond Creed in order to keep the time and space from unravelling) was able to discover the cure for the Legacy Virus. Unfortunately for Mystique and the X-Men, Stryfe made the cure require a guinea pig inject the cure into one's heart and use their mutant power, activating the cure into the atmosphere and killing the guinea pig. Xavier refused to let anyone use the cure because of this, so Colossus steals it and shot up with the cure, dying while at the same time curing the mutant race of the disease....

WHAT ISSUE OF WHAT BOOK!!! Cause I want that.

And although I am afraid to ask...how..how..did they kill my beloved Psylocke. By the time I stopped reading they had already fucked up the character by bringing in that "Who is the real Betsy Braddock" storyline. Then the other one died of the Legacy Virus...

Colossus died in Uncanny X-Men #390

As for Psylockes, after dumping Angel for the evil jerk that was Thunderbird III (a native from India with fire powers) she and Beast were attacked by a Spanish mutant named Vargas, who was after a volume of Destiny's diaries that Storm and the Xtreme X-Men had. Vargas beat her and Beast to a bloody pulp, culminating with Vargas impaling her with his sword. Making things worse is that we never saw her death as Beast blacked out from his beating at Vargas's hands right as Psylockes and Vargas started fighting and woke up with Psylocke's corpse strategicly placed in his lap for the X-Men to find them....

That was in Extreme X-men 2, right. I have to get both those issues since we are talking about two of my favorite characters.

But if something ever happens to Angel or Wolvie, hell will have to be paid...hell I say.

I got out of collecting the X-Men back in 1991. That's when they started screwing with the characters WAY too much. After the initial Genosha storyline, they started going nuts with altering characters with no real point to doing so.

Not only that but the elevating prices did not justify the growing frustration I was having with comics in general, so I stopped collecting, sold my collection (Though I should have kept my Star Wars: Dark Empire series), and started buying more RPG stuff.

In the end, I was happier.

And how did Colosus die.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

I believe it was the cure for the Legacy virus. For it to be able to work, someone was going to have to sarcifice themselves. While the other X-Men were playing basektball, Colossus injected himself. Whether or not, it was the real cure for the Legacy virus, I don't know.

I have the issus that he dies in. I think that is pretty accurate, but if it's not someone can gladly correct me.

Colossus did indeed die in order to cure the Legacy Virus, ending what had became a long-running joke of a storyline when it was resolved...

I kinda liked the whole legacy virus thing...well not the whole thing because I left during the middle of it. But it was intresting in the beganning at least. And the issue where Illyana died(Peter's sister...I'm pretty sure that I misspelled her name) was great fucking writing. I felt so sorry for peter with Mikal dieing with the Morlocks, his parents being gunned down when Illyana was kiddnapped and then his little sister dying.

Well Peter Rasputin is in a better place with his family after such bravery to sacrifice himself to save the mutant race. But he did it while the other X-men were playing basketball?! So not one x-men came to say Peter don't do it?

Because Wolverine = more $$$ than Colossus?

But this could turn him into the savior of mutant world... one year "dead" and a huge miracle return, with mini series and one shots.

Heh. That would be awesome. His fanbase would be even bigger and the issues for the mini-series would sell like hotcakes. That's a good idea, actually. Too bad none of the braintrusts at Marvel thought about that.

See... is not hard.

You know, you'd think that Magneto would have found some random mutant to "take one for the team" and ensure that the mutant race would survive.

Anyways, isn't Puck the Canadian Midget? He's not a mutant, at any rate...

Wolverine's healing factor wouldn't have saved him. It was the kicker of Stryfe's cure, that someone would have to die to cure his virus.

Cecilia Reyes (J-Lo esque mutant doctor who Chris Claremont turned into a junkie) was with Colossus when he decided to use the cure on himself and got the shit kicked out of her by Colossus when she tried to stop him from sacrificing himself......
