River City Rocker 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2003 A long, long, long time ago, I was at home watching MTV one Saturday night. In the space of a few hours, I saw one of the most ridiculous double standards for censorship that I've ever seen. The first case was "Dre Day" by Dr. Dre with Snoop Dogg. During part of the video, Dre holds up a pistol in full view of the camera. MTV literally whited out part of the screen so that no one saw that gun. Later on, they aired Queensryche's "Eyes of a Stranger". One scene involved one character giving a gun to another person. And they didn't censor it. I know MTV has gazillions of things wrong with it, but shouldn't they at least have the same standards for censoring firearms from all of their videos? So a prog-metal band can depict a man with a gun in their video, but the gangsta rapper can't? -Ben (this happened about ten years ago, but it still bothers me)
Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 26, 2003 Depends on the Usage of the Gun itself... You said they "handed" a gun in the Prog-Rock video but what was Dre doing with it? Aiming? Waving it? What? That makes a difference...
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted July 26, 2003 Seether and Sum 41 have reciently had the word gun edited out of their songs for MTV. For Seether it's stupid, cause it's said a lot.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 26, 2003 I understand if it was "So I shot my Gun at her face" type lyric but not when in seether's case "She told me she had a gun" That's just W-R-O-N-G When they edit GUN out of that song...It becomes hard to understand the purpose of the song when most times when words are edited it's a "bad" word so it messes up the song for someone whom never heard the normal version "When She told me she had A -----" It KILLED the song's purpose. Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Report post Posted July 26, 2003 I agree with them editing out guns. Whenever I hear the word gun, or see one, I am suddenly filled with the urge to open fire on a the nearest person. It's good to know that MTV is doing to responsible thing by keeping those around me safe.
Guest T_Hunt Report post Posted July 27, 2003 Yea i have. noticed stuff like trhis before but i noticed who says it has a differnce also.In the 3-6 Mafia video ridding spinners, Lil Flip says " i'm doing 150 so i'm watching for the cops". While in the the video for that new ludacris song for 2 fast 2 furious he says something about doing 150 on the off ramp or something like that. The only reason i quess Flip got censored and ludacris didnt is because Flip MENTIONED the cops. It is very messed up though how the go app shit on censoring sometimes. Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 27, 2003 The lyric in question "See, I'm off that anti-freeze and my car is TIPSY Off the off ramp doin about a hundred and fifty Rollin through East Pernium, on way to Ben Hill Slide a five to the junkie to clean my windshield " Yeah...I don't see how Lil Flip was censored unless there was something more to the lyrics around it... Guest Prototype450 Report post Posted July 27, 2003 MTV is one big ass double standard. Eminem can get away with bitch all he wants. Let 50 cent or snoop dogg or any other rapper say it, they'll get bleeped in .5 seconds.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 27, 2003 "ASS" is often a double standard...some get censored some don't... Guest spiny norman Report post Posted July 27, 2003 They honestly censor our the word gun? That's pretty sad. Did they edit it out of Janie's Got A Gun? Just take out the whole chorus. Plus most of the verses. That song is Satan's work.

B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2003 I still love it when I see the video for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's "The Message." NOTHING is edited out, even today. The song is so socially relevant twenty years later that if a word of phrase is taken out of the song, the message is lost. I give MTV credit for knowing what NOT to cut from a song. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 28, 2003 I hope they brutally censor every single song that's played on the station. With any luck, bands will stop making videos due to their material being shredded, and fans will quit supporting the station. The byproduct of this is bands changing their image to the super-happy peace loving sunshine and lemon drops thing, thus resulting in a cathartic episode involving the second coming of Black Sabbath. Guest HHH123007 Report post Posted July 29, 2003 They censor the word "drugs" in that new Bottom of a Bottle song, but yet they show drugs in videos....what the hell is that about?
Guest Choken One Report post Posted July 29, 2003 they should just censore that entire song while they are at it.
Guest Deviant Report post Posted July 29, 2003 MTV in the US censors the WORD gun? Nice free country you have there... Anyway, what is so bad about "gun"? Is this to protect the same kids that play with toy guns all the time? As far as I know, Wal-Marts in the US have a firearms section. So kids can see a huge rack of guns for sale next to Chicken Elmo but can't hear the word when it is in an appropriate context in a song? Political correctness has ruined the world.
