Biggest music flame outs ever

Not nesseccarilly one hit wonders or aging stars fading from the spotlight but artists and groups who had many moments in the sun only to just go to either "Who?" or "What the hell happened to them?"

Couple off the top of my head:

REM and Pearl Jam

No offense to fans of the groups but they were red hot during the early 90's and now the only time you hear about Pearl Jam is when Eddie Veddor is on some tirade about an issue

And probably the flame out that I am the happiest about is:

Oasis

Bono once went up to Noel Gallagher and said that he felt Oasis would one day be bigger than the Beatles, to which Gallagher said, "We are bigger right now!" If I was Bono I'd tell him to fuck off with that kind of attitude

Oasis definitely.

REM I guess...but they were probable happier not being well known in the first place.

Pearl Jam is just doing their own thing and making every track sound like there is no effort behind it at this point.

I got one word for my answer: Hootie.

Hootie and Blowfish seperated if I recall and "HOOTIE" is a solo jazz artist now.

Pearl Jam wasn't a flame out as far as I am concerned because they are STILL a huge ticket draw.

Thank GOD that Oasis went down the toilet where they RIGHTFULLY belonged.

I remember recently hearing about a hootie and the blowfish show coming up at some kids birthday party or something.

I could be wrong though.

Hootie and the Blowfish didn't break up. There was a golf tournament in Myrtle Beach a few months back that they sponsored or something.

The Darius Rucker solo album is just to tide their great fans over for a bit.

Hootie and the Blowfish are back together and touring in support of an album they released early this year.

Guns N Roses is by far the biggest flameout I have ever seen in music. They could have RULED the rock genre to this day if Axl hadn;t self-destructed and become a victim of his own ego, to the point the band that backed him up is now recording an album with Scott Weiland as their frontman.

Then How come I always see Darius ??? (hootie) doing Solo shit for Nascar?

I gotta second the GNR mention

The entire package has to be considered a flame out

The true GNR

Axl Himself

The New GNR with Axl

The Weiland GNR

I've been seeing Darius doing solo stuff for years... he always was the most recognizable one in the band....

I'll withhold judgement about Velvet Revolver until I hear the album... I wasn't very impressed with "Set Me Free" from the Hulk soundtrack, but we shall see... I read some things in the latest Guitar World about it, so...

speaking of that, Zakk Wylde was inches away from joining GnR, but it was pulled because some demands that Zakk allegedly made, but he disavowed them.

Zakk didn't join with GNR because he thought Axl was a jack ass.

Posted

He was right... He said that Axl came up to him some time later and Zakk asked what the deal was, Axl said "I heard you wanted three million and your own tour bus". After taking a sentence or two to refute that statement, Zakk said, "You think I'm some kind of dishrag whore? I wanted six million and *three* tour buses!"

Gold.

REM's kinda funny...after Monster sold great numbers they signed a huge money deal with WB for 10 years or so. Or 10 albums, or whatever.

But since then they've put out 3 more albums and none of them have sold well. Green, Out of Time, Automatic, and Monster all sold large, that's 4 in a row since going to WB...so I guess they thought they would keep stringing out the hits.

sex pistols. set the world on fire, then completely self-destructed.

Maybe because I'm a fan, but I don't think of GNR as a "flame out." They had a nice run from 87-92, which is longer then most flash in the pans. Plus the fact alot of people call them "one of" the greatest hard rock bands ever speaks volumes. Oh, and they put out, IMO, 4 really great albums in that time.

Rage Against the Machine could be put on this list. Where is the former singer now?

Where is Van Halen? Are they still doing the 2 singer tour deal?

They didn't Flame out.

They just broke Up.

By definition of the term "FLAME OUT"...RAGE doesn't qualify.

From the world of rap, Q Tip. I have no idea where he went, but he was out there for a while.

What about Ma$e?

I know he retired and became a preacher but should he count?

I don't see how REM belong on the list. In the UK at least, they just headlined two huge festivals and were on top form.

Limp Bizkit were actually popular once, I hear...

I would say Jane's Addiction, but it looks like they may be turning the corner now...

I wouldn't say that Jane's flamed out, but they definitely leave that impression. They broke up after the Lollapalooza festivals started. They reformed around 96 and released the Kettlewhistle b-sides compilation. I think after that theywound up going on hiatus, and during that time they all went clean. Dave Navarro had a really bad drug problem. After that both Navarro and Perry Farrell released solo albums that didn't necessarily light the world on fire, and went back together, recorded a new album, and revamped Lollapalooza and went back on the road.

Ma$e shouldn't count. He kind of retired at the height of his career, so we'll never get to see if he flamed out.

He changed his name to Kamaal (sp?) the Abstract. I ain't heard hide nor tail of him since then.

And Darius is just a solo artist, but Hootie didn't break up. It's more of a side project

A little note about Hootie and the Blowfish for my first post:

"Hootie & the Blowfish" does not refer to "Darius and the band". It refers to two friends of the band at their college, South Carolina. One guy they called Hootie, the other was the Blowfish, and that's where they got their name.

You're welcome.

REM was around and big before the early 90's. They hit it in 87 didn't they?

What about Smashing Pumpkins? Two big albums. Then? Nothing.

Cyndi Lauper is the classic example. Though she did have hits in True Colors and I Drove All Night, she never really lived up to the expectations everyone believed she would live up to with the She's So Unusual album.

And Culture Club too.

I would say Linkin Park will join this list shortly.....
