A question concerning

Recommended Posts

As the title says, a question: I had heard a while back that people were having problems with the DVD players in their PS2 - skipping and such. However, I also heard that this was because those were the first-run models, and that such errors had been corrected.

In any event, my question is this: Is it a reliable DVD player? I'm not looking for top-notch quality or anything, I just wanna know if it works well enough that I could just buy a PS2, instead of buying a DVD player.

Also, I had heard some sorta rumours about something called a PS2.5, or something. I dunno, I guess it was supposed to have a better something, but anyway - any truth to that? In fact, are ANY of the top game companies looking to put out a new console anytime in the next year or so? I don't wanna drop $250 bucks on something that'll drop a hundred bucks in price 2 weeks later.

Any help is appreciated.

I've had a PS2 for years and have used it as my DVD player, it's the only one I have.

I've never had a single problem with it, and it's played any DVD that I've put in it.

The only thing about it, and I don't know if you care about this, is that you can't turn it off from your bed or something, as the remote or controller doesn't have a power button on it. Not that big of a deal, unless you like to watch DVDs from bed before you go to sleep, heh.

I use my PS2 as a DVD player. I've never had any problems with it except for my Royal Rumble 2003 DVD where it skips Christian entrance into the Rumble but doesn't do it with my other DVD players.

You could get a real cheap DVD player as low as $50 now. As for the new model PS2.5 (if you will) I heard that it is progressive scan and could play DVD-R and CD-R but it is Japanese only at the moment.

A few of my WWE DVD's mess up on the PS2, most notably Vengeance 2001, which I tried two different copies of when I returned the first thinking it was defective. It worked fine on my friends Xbox though.

SummerSlam 2001 gets all skippy during Taker/Kane vs DDP/Kanyon and Rock/Booker, but thankfully leaves Angle/Austin alone. Again, worked perfectly fine on a real DVD player the other day. Royal Rumble 2002 stops for a split second when Bradshaw enters.. no big deal. I think there are a few other small "freeze" gltiches I've noticed at home that I haven't watching the DVDs elsewhere, but it's really no big deal.

This bothers me A LOT, as many times watching a DVD are how I wind down a day before going to sleep, and then I realize I have to get up and shut the PS2 off after getting all comfy in bed.

Bottom line: The PS2 is an acceptable DVD player and if you don't wish to, there is no need to run out and pay more money for a stand alone player. It's not a bad idea when you do have the extra money, however.

Why don't you just *pause* the screen and it'll go black...then you don't have to get up

someone said something about a PS2.5, its actually the PSX (not to be confused with the original acronym for the original Playstation)

I think they did improve the DVD stuff, and theres also a TV Tuner/Tivo Like device (I think 40 hours) and a couple of other enhancements. Its also a metalicy white color.

From what I've heard, Sony will be marketing it towards high end electronics consumers so it probably will be closer to $500. I'd just stick with a regular PS2.

A note about DVD players and pricing. I got a really nice Toshiba DVD player for 25 bucks on Ebay. Thing regularly sold for over 100. The main reason it sold so low is because the person sold it like it was broken and would be expensive to repair. However I did a search online and found that it would only require 3 $.99 parts from Radio shack and someone who knows how to solder parts on the board.

Works absolutely perfect now. Previously I had a cheapo APEX that I got for $50 two Christmas' ago with money I got for Christmas prior to Christmas, but its pretty basic. Now all I need is a TV that supports all the neat features my DVD player has and Im set (progressive scan for instance..)

Or why don't I just shut me TV off?

Because the PS2 will still be making a loud noise, made even louder by the total silence of trying to get to sleep. It's really just a minor thing that I'm glad someone besides me isn't really fond of either.

I think it is better to go off with the X-Box and its DVD player instead.

PS2 DVD is decent, but its sub-standard compared to the X-Box DVD IMO, but just get yourself a regular dvd player for a cheaper price

Amen, I thought I was the only one who can get very pissed off at this. It's gotten to the point where I almost refuse to watch any DVD before I go to sleep now, I HATE getting up after I am comfortable and half asleep.

That sound, that BLASTED PS2 sound. It may not be loud when you are playing games, but at night when everything is silent, it's enough to drive me mad.
