Sammy Sosa...MVP candidate

Recommended Posts

Off on another tagent because I'm Bored but why are people now throwing Sammy Sosa out as an MVP candidate? He didn't do ANYTHING the first two months of the season and let's not forget the corked bat thing (no one I'm not saying he's corking now) which cost him seven games. It just feels like the media almost feels sorry for Sammy over how he was supposedly mistreated over the corked bat thing so now they have to hype him as an MVP candidate now.

Well, he has gone from NO output the beginning of the season to having 30 homeruns and he has energized the Cubbies back into the playoff race. I don't think he should be MVP, and he won't be. It's a two man race, Pujols or Bonds. Pick your horse.

I pick Pujols.

I like Sosa a lot but he's not putting out enough offense. The Cubs are lucky to get 4 runs a game so he's not helping all that much.

Bond's put up good numbers but when doesn't he?

Its Pujols season. He's played good all year. And now he's on a 27 game hitting streak. I'm giving it to him for being the ebst all year.

Bond leads in HR's, slugging, On Base, Walks. The lineup isn't nearly at the level of the Cardnials. Bonds gets my vote.

It's very close. Neither would be an undeserving choice.

"NL CY Young-Gagne"

If that happens I'm going sky diving without a parachute. God I do not want to go through an off season listening to how great Gagne is and he was the Cy Young winner.

Sammy got on a hot streak at the right time and is putting up nice numbers right now. So he can be considered a MVP candidate. But I think everyone knows it's going to come down to Pujols or Bonds. I think Bonds is going to take another MVP award (would be number seven) unless Pujols wins the Triple Crown. Although not all the Triple Crown winners have won the MVP in the same season - Chuck Klein, Lou Gehrig, and Ted Williams twice didn't win MVP's in the same season they won the Triple Crown.

Webb might be more solid than Willis but awards are part popularity contest, Gagne. If you think anyone other than D-Train is taking the NL ROY, you're crazy.

I think it has to be Pujols. He's been much more consistent this year than Sosa, who only seems to have caught fire once everyone was accusing him of being a cheater. Nice to see that motivates him more than helping his team win. I wouldn't argue overmuch with Bonds as the MVP, but I think Pujols is more deserving.

I look at it this way: without Pujols fueling their offense, where would the Cardinals be, given their miserable pitching? At least the Giants would still be a decent team without Bonds. But the Cardinals without Pujols? Please.

Pujols all the way.

I know. I'm just saying who I think should win.

In defense of Sammy Sosa -- though I'm not saying he should be MVP -- Miguel Tejada wasn't rocking anyone's world last year until the A's went on that 20-game winning streak. Now, Tejada wasn't as unproductive before the streak as Sosa was early this season, but it was during the last part of the season that Tejada secured the MVP award. If the Cubs make the playoffs, I'd have no problem with Sosa being in between 3rd and 5th in MVP voting.

Its a shame the A's waited so long to call up Rich Harden, from the minors. This kid is amazing. He's 3-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 32 Innings Pitched. He beat the Royals when they were still hot and his only loss came to the White Sox on Sunday. He had 8 strike outs in 5.0 I.P. in that game. Just amazing stuff. If he would have played more games this season he would have hands down won the AL ROY.

I'm not going to say that Rich Harden had the potential to win the AL CY because Loazia was winning games on the White Sox when they were pure grabage this year. If the white sox wouldn't have struggled earlier in the year giving him 0-1 no decessions then he'd have even more wins

Give it up to Rich Harden though

I would argue the exact opposite. Without Pujols, the Cards still have Edmonds, Renteria, and Rolen powering the offense. Without Bonds, the Giants' offense is crap.

Bonds isn't going to play for a few games because of he's going to visit his father who's ailing.

If the Giants lose every game while he's gone then Bonds is the MVP and I'll change my vote from Pujols to Bonds.

One game so far and they managed to not get a single hit from the 3rd inning on. Oh and they lost, having only scored a single run. But you'd also have to take into account that Rich Aurillia and Ray Durham are on the DL and they're usually solid hitters, with Aurillia being top notch (usually) in a clutch. And the fact that Jesse "Useless Rookie who has yet to impress anyone and manages to walk every goddamn lead off hitter, while fellow rookie Jerome Williams has kicked ass" Foppert was pitching.

Still though, they needed Bonds.

I pretty much make it a point to never get my hopes up when anyone but Jason Schmidt is pitching.

Gagne is not going to get the Cy young unless somehow he comes close to the saves record or breaks it.

Who would be the NL CY winner then?

Here's the top 5 in wins, strikeouts, era, and whip

Wins

Russ Ortiz 17, Woody Williams 14, Hideo Nomo 13,

Livan Hernandez 13, and Kevin Brown 12

Strikeouts

Kerry Wood 201, Javier Vazquez 178, Mark Prior 170, Jason Schmidt 153, and Hideo Nomo 144

ERA

Kevin Brown 2.28, Jason Schimdt 2.32, Brandon Webb 2.56, Mark Prior 2.65, and Miguel Batista 2.86

WHIP

Jason Schimidt 0.95, Mark Prior 1.09, Kevin Brown 1.10, Brandon Webb 1.11, and Mark Redman/Woody Williams 1.15

From looking at the stats alone its between Jason Schimdt, Mark Prior, and Kevin Brown

I go with Pujols...

Not just because of his stand up year but because MLB needs "new" blood and if Bonds wins again it just makes it look like "Oh it's same old thing again"...

It's not really that important but it's another aspect...

Well I think that's why Zito beat out Pedro last year for A.L. Cy Young because Pedro can win it any year and wasn't like Zito wasn't deserving of the award. So I think the same scenerio will play out with Pujols and Bonds unless the Cardinals go into the tank the rest of the season

Oh and my vote would actually be Smoltz for Cy Young and MVP but that's just me. Cy Young in the A.L. would be a lock for Esteban Loaiza at the moment if he wasn't Esteban Loaiza. He might just lose out on lack of name value which wouldn't be right. A.L. MVP...ummmm no clue at the moment and I guess it will be another Tejada situation this year with someone (and their team) getting red hot down the stretch to find a favorite for MVP.

The AL voters will just go "Eh...A-rod had good numbers..." and then people will be bitching cuz he isn't a winner and doesn't deserve it

Considering A-Rod isn't having as good a year as last season I seriously doubt he'll get major consideration this year. Now that I think about it Carlos Beltran might be my pick for A.L. MVP.

we realize it but his Contract and his record is supposedly making him unworthy.

Which is why Tejada got those those votes last year cuz he was on a winner...

Right now my pick is A-Rod again. 4th in the league in OPS while playing shortstop. 15 steals as well. When will people realize what a great player Rodriguez is?

You don't deserve the MVP if your on a last place team, period. It might not be his fault but I have a serious problem with a player from a non-contending team winning it like Andre Dawson in '87.

PLENTY of people realize A-Rod is great and I don't think there is anyone who denies it. Besides there is an award for the best hitter in the game and its the Hank Aaron Award and if MLB would get their head out of their asses they'd actually make people think of it as a major award. A-Rod won it last year in the A.L.
