Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted August 16, 2003 SI.Com MIAMI (AP) -- Florida Marlins left-hander Mark Redman says there's a perception problem involving umpire Jim Wolf because his brother is Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Randy Wolf. The Marlins and Phillies are battling for the National League wild-card lead. Jim Wolf, a Triple-A umpire who fills in for vacationing major-league umps, worked the Marlins-Dodgers series this week, and Redman questioned three of his calls in Florida's 6-4 loss Thursday. Redman stopped short of saying Wolf allowed his family connection to influence calls, but said, "I guarantee that crosses every player's mind." "You hope he doesn't do that," Redman said. "It crosses people's minds, but he's a professional." Wolf declined to comment, but crew chief Larry Young defended his colleague. Young noted the Haller brothers -- umpire Bill and catcher Tom -- were also in the NL together in the 1960s and 70s. "[Wolf] doesn't perceive it to be a problem, and I do not, either," Young said. "He could care less about the pennant race." TV replays showed Wolf blew a call Thursday when he ruled Jeromy Burnitz safe on an infield hit. Redman complained, and as he walked off the field at the end of the inning he shouted at Wolf. "I told him, `You're better than that,"' Redman said. "I don't think he liked it too much." I've never seen highlights of the game. Did Wolf do a bad job.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted August 16, 2003 Gee golly, a whole ONE blown call. This ump sure be playin favorites. Give me a break. Everybody misses calls and the replay showed the 1B foot on the opposite side of the bases which gets blown quite often. I am happy though, if the Marlins start to bitch it shows their heads are getting out of it a little.
SteakGrowsOnUecker 0 Report post Posted August 16, 2003 This is ridiculous. He blows one call and they immediately question if he's favoring teams. This ump would be stupid to do that. Why would he jeopardize his career as a future major league ump for something like that. Absolute bullshit. You want to complain about blown calls, watch an NFL preseason game. Guest BobbyWhioux Report post Posted August 16, 2003 I think there are, occasionally, legitimate beefs about the officiating in all the major sports. I don't think this is one of them. One isolated "missed" call certainly isn't sufficient "evidence" for any accusations or theories about an alternate agenda. Anybody can miss a call now and then. Young noted the Haller brothers -- umpire Bill and catcher Tom -- were also in the NL together in the 1960s and 70s. Actually, that's complete bullshit Tom Haller was an AL umpire Bill Haller played one year in the AL with the 1972 Tigers (who won the AL East that year, BTW) It's just poor planning to have such a conflict of interest. And trust me, being a Royals fan, it's easy to spot which umpires are total morons (Paul Emmel, Derryl Cousins, CB Bucknor, Gary Gibson, Jerry Layne, Rob Drake, Brian Runge) and which umpires are cool (Laz Diaz, Jim Joyce)

Here's a clue for ya.. ROYALS 9TH: MOTLEY BATTED FOR SHERIDAN; WORRELL REPLACED DAYLEY (PITCHING); ORTA BATTED FOR MOTLEY; Orta singled to Clark (it was the 0-2 pitch); Balboni singled to Landrum (it was the 0-2 pitch) [Orta to second]; CONCEPCION RAN FOR BALBONI; Sundberg forced Orta (Worrell to Pendleton) [Concepcion to second]; MCRAE BATTED FOR BIANCALANA; Porter allowed a passed ball (it was the 2-0 pitch) [Concepcion to third, Sundberg to second]; McRae was walked intentionally; WATHAN RAN FOR MCRAE; IORG BATTED FOR QUISENBERRY; Iorg singled to Van Slyke (it was the 1-0 pitch) [Concepcion scored, Sundberg scored, Wathan to second]; 2 R, 3 H, 0 E, 2 LOB. Cardinals 1, Royals 2. Let's break this down #1- Orta is called safe. Sure, it's a bad call, but it was the first batter of the inning, with Balboni, Sundberg and Biancalana coming up, the Cardinals had a good shot. #2- Jack Clark screws up catch a simple foul popup from Balboni #3- Even with that, Orta is called out at third. That means that Orta doesn't play a part in the Royal victory #4- That passed ball didn't help #5- Neither did the intentional walk to get to the pitchers spot (Howser sent pinch hitter Dane Iorg up) Actually, I think 1985 was the last year without the DH in the World Series Never mind that the plate umpire Jim Quick had some questionable calls in Game 6 (Quick also ejected a trainer and ejected Mitch Williams in a 20 inning game in 1993). Plus, the umpiring with NL and AL crews was very inconsistant. Denkinger, of course, isn't that bad of an umpire, it's just that some whiners continue to lie for 18 straight years. Then again, maybe if the Cardinals didn't hit .185, they could have won.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2003 Nobody is a bigger moron than Chris Guccione. First of all he can't call balls and strikes. And as soon as anyone even raises an eyebrow he throws off the mask, sticks his chin out, and starts yelling at the player. Thus goading the player/coach into arguing back and he tosses them. Dickheads like this need to be fired. The fact I remembered the guys name tells you he sucks.
