The Cards almost owed me a TV

Recommended Posts

That was just pathetic out there today, I know the bullpen is thin from yesterday, but could someone just get an f'n out or at least keep the ball in the park. They'll light Estes up tomorrow because really who hasn't, but they better have a good lead.

I came close to breaking the TV watching ESPN talking about Maurice Clarett for 10 minutes, and not show highlights of the Twins who are a 1/2 game behind the White Sox.

well...Major College Stars don't get suspended for a full season very often and Twins will still be 1/2 game back the next day anyways...

It's one thing to cover it. But than they bring in Jim Brown to tell us the athletic department has an agenda.

The Twins-Angels was actually a game that was going on. It had a great finish. At this point Clarett's suspended. The rest of the story is just speculation.

If the game is going on...Isn't there some rules how you can't show it as it's playing or something?

Maybe they wanted to rightfully wait for it to be over...considering they had JIM BROWN on the show...over rides anything minnsota is doing at that time...

I am fucking tired of ESPN showing Playmakers 30 times a week more than anything else. Ok, you guys have a new series, I get it.

Maurice Clarett is as overexposed as they get. After his injury problems and shortcomings in the championship, I don't buy the hype justifying all of this coverage.

What really bothers me is ESPN and other media oulets telling us how many problems college football has. Well, when the only thing you cover is the negative things than it does look worse than it is.

The Cubs-Cardnials highlights where shown at the beginning.

Actually they showed the cubs cardinals TWICE before they showed the Twins.

Makes a Cubs fan mighty happy to see that one. Sure, Estes was his usual unimpressive self, but the Cards didn't exactly light him up, nor did their pitching (starting or relief) make things look too good, since they'd give up the lead almost as soon as they gained it. As not just a Cubs fan but a baseball fan, seeing this entire series brought a smile to my face. The Cards/Cubs rivalry has got to be one of the best in baseball right now and this series was just full of emotion, memorable moments, and just about everything you look for in a good series. The Cubs would've been happy to take three-of-five, but they ended up taking all but one (and even that one is a little questionable, since Alou's would be double was ruled foul). Who knows who'll come out with the Central title, but the Cubs impressed me quite a bit this week, as their bullpen really stepped up in the first game on Tuesday, they actually got offensive production when they needed it (especially today), and they just looked like a more solid team.

Of course they still have their flaws (like the Cards do, or any other team for that matter), but they looked to be taking care of those flaws in this series. It could very well be back to normal tomorrow, but color me impressed with the outcome of this series. I wanted to do anything but break my TV while watching these games. It's what any great rivalry should be.

I'll eat a little crow, its funny I didn't realize Tomko was pitching against Estes that day, when I saw that I knew runs would be scoring. I will say this I was impressed with the Cubs B-Pen as they caught a lot of shit from that last series in St. Louis.

And Izzy blew a save against the AAA Reds tonight, the bullpen is pitching with ZERO confidence right now. They get behind in the count and are afraid to throw anything besides right down the pipes.

And yeah I'm pretty sure the Central will come down to the last three days with all three teams.

The Cubs' pen deserved the flack they got for the series in St. Louis. Had it not been for them, game one wouldn't have been so tight at the end, game two wouldn't have been a lose, and game three would've gone to extra innings keeping a Cubs' victory in the realm of possibility.

They were however quite good in this game (especially in game two like I said). Whenever they were a little shaky, the offense would actually come to life and smooth things over.

Estes is the only guy in their starting rotation that I just don't have faith in. He got by yesterday but only because the offense and bad Cards' pitching came through. I prefer Juan Cruz over him, even though Cruz has a tendency to make things a little too interesting at times.

Well, he's still a young guy, so he's working out all the bugs for now. If he's still pitching like this next year or the year after, then forget about it, but he's just going through the growing pains right now, which is understandable, but at the same time, quite annoying since the Cubs are in the race for the first time in years.

Take it from a Giants fan:

Estes Ain't Gonna Get Better.

Shawn hasn't had been able to string together back to back good starts since 1997, when he won 19 games, was the losing pitcher in the All-star game, and was the ace (BUAHAHAHAHAHA) of the Giants rotation (no wonder they got swept out in the LDS by the Marlins). Every now and then he has a good game, but he's just as likely if not more likely to get pounded. And the Giants were still able to pawn him off on the Mets before the '02 season... hahahahahaha

The only reason he's on the team is because Dusty's got a strong sense of loyalty to his boys. He loves to bring them in or bring them back, and he's slow to give up on them (for example, trotting out Livan for game 7 last year... *shudders at the bad memory*)

He's just a classic underachiever, like almost every Giants pitching prospect (especially the lefties) in the last 25 or so years. [Remember Atlee Hammaker? No? EXACTLY.]

Well then it's obvious that they need to dump him. I wasn't aware he had been playing for so long, but I do know that Dusty's tendancy to stick to something too long, even if it's not working, is why Estes is still around. Estes looks especially bad when you put him next to the rest of the Cubs' regular starting rotation of Wood, Zambrano, Prior, and Clement.

Interesting concept, although I'd let Wood have a couple more seasons in the starting rotation before I'd move him. He's not what we saw back in 1998, but he still puts out a strong effort most of the time. I hadn't heard that idea before, but it would make great sense for perhaps the 2005 or 2006 season. If the Cubs could in fact add another ace or if Cruz could work out the kinks in his throwing game, then moving Wood into the closing position would be a nice idea since the Cubs haven't really had a reliable closer since Randy Myers and that was damn near a decade ago.

After nearly 6 full seasons you have to wonder if Wood will ever fully live up to the potential. He's not a bad starter, he just can't seem to get over the hump and pitch in the class of the elite pitchers.

I think it depends on what pitcher you're talking about. For someone like Shawn Estes those are good numbers. For someone like Kerry Wood I think they're disapointing.

They're impressive when you compare them to the typical starter these days, but considering many had him pegged as the next Nolan Ryan five years ago, they're disapointing. He's got good stuff, but he's just way too inconsistent and it seems like guys in his own rotation are starting pass him by.

The Nolan Ryan comparisons are too optimistic for any pitcher. But I look at Kerry Wood's stats, and I see a few things.

1. He's 26. Most baseball players take a big step forward when they hit 27.

2. His ERAs have been remarkably consistant for three years now.

3. He strikes out well over a batter an inning.

These factors usually bode well for future success. Mark Prior is certainly better, but Kerry Wood is almost certainly going to get better.
