Puro Gimmicks?

Recommended Posts

Guest NoMercy

I've been watching some D/L'ed matches, and I've always wonder about the gimmicks of certain wrestlers. I mostly figure, gimmicks need not apply to them, like a Chris Benoit or Jerry Lynn.

But then I watched a Great Muta match, and it made me think, whats his gimmick that he can just mysteriously spit mist from his throat on command?

And while you guys help me out with that another few guys I wondered about were: Mr. Pogo, Jun Akiyama, Hiroshi Hase, Lyger, Great Sasuke, and Misawa. Thanks a lot. Any other information on Japanese Gimmicks would be greatly appretiated.

Mr. Pogo: Shitty garbage wrestler

Jun Akiyama: Amatuer star turned pro

Hiroshi Hase: Olympic wrestler turned pro wrestler turned senator.

Jyushin Lyger: Supposed to be a spin off from a comic book or cartoon or something.

Great Sasuke: High flying spot machine

Mitsuharu Misawa: Probably the greatest wrestler of the 1990's turned shittiest booker of the 21st century.

You won't find many gimmicks in the major leagues of Japan, your more apt to find them in indy feds like DDT, Osaka Pro, and Toryumon

What about Great Muta?

and some of those seemed like Smark interpretations, I wanted to get the kayfabe explanations of the wrestlers.

Pogo was a sadist.

Lyger was based off of an anime about a Tiger/Lion creature, hense the name. He eventually became The Man in the NJ Junior division, though.

Sasuke was basically a Sabu-type, except a Shining Babyface version. He also went through a stage of being a Smoking, Drinking, Bad Boy Spot Machine, but that's about it.

Misawa went from being the Leader of the Young Guns to The Man in AJPW.

Muta was supposed to be some kind of demon creature. Took the gimick from Great Kabuki. Don't know the origins beyond that.

If you want funky gimmicks Osaka Pro is definatley the way to go, unlike most gimmick workers the guys they have in the roles are excellent, particually the likes of Ebessan and Black Buffalo

Yeah, I'm not much into buying tapes, I download a lot of media. But I've never really seen any Osaka Pro, mostly AJPW is easy to find.

I dont know what you'd find of Opro available to download, from what I'm told by others (I'm a tape man myself) it's mostly NJPW and AJWP out there with very little other stuff

I could be way off, as I'm not big into puro, but wasn't Muta supposed to be like, the son of Kabuki, or something?

Muto IS Great Kabuki's son, isn't he? I mean, in real life?

Isn't there a guy that dresses like a tree and has matches in Japan? Ken something?

Mr Pogo was basically the japanese version of New Jack as he never ever used a wrestling hold and always made his opponets bleed with his weapons. Some of his matches are on FMW DVDs, is various deathmatches, most of them suck.

Kabuki and Muta aren´t related.

Liger is a mix of a tiger and a lion ==> liger

There was a highly successfull Tiger Mask comic/series/whatever around 1980

I think Pogo´s gimmick is that he is a man who can sometimes avoid barbwire, sometimes not. I just love his teases

PS: Onita´s gimmick is that he´s a sissy who always cries ;-)
