Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2003 Decided to go through the RPGamer news bits as I have missed the sites news and came across this. It's dated August 18th, 2003. Amazed nothing was posted on this. As part of a new joint effort with D3 Publisher Inc, Sega is planning to reinvigorate some of gaming's most classic titles as part of their 3D-Ages product line. These will run the gamut from such hack and slashers as Golden Axe, to the original 3D shooter, Space Harrier. However, among the list of releases planned, RPGamers should keep their attention particularly focused on a remake of the original Phantasy Star, one of console roleplaying's first ever titles. Released only slightly after the first Dragon Quest in Japan, and actually before it in North America, the original Phantasy Star is what many gamers think of as a truly classic RPG. It introduced a generation to the star system of Algo, which suffered under the harsh regime of Lassic, and followed the exploits of Alis as she struggled to overthrow Lassic in response to the slaughter of both her brother and friend. The remake will feature improvements to the graphics of the original as well as a name change to Phantasy Star - generation:1 All of the remakes in this series are being planned for exclusive releases on PlayStation 2 and the first three; Phantasy Star, Monaco GP, and Fantasy Zone, are scheduled for Japanese shelves on August 28th. Unfortunately, no mention of a North American or European release for these titles has been made as of yet. Now then, if it's called Phantasy Star - Generation: 1, wouldn't that imply more on the way? And if you are making remakes of a series like that, and UPDATING it for the PS2, then you better believe they probably have a new Phantasy Star in the works (HTF that works, I don't know). AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2003 That'd be cool, although I wish it was on GC, because it could help the GC and give the FinFan series a run for its money.
Insane Bump Machine 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2003 The games were already previewed extensively on IGN in late august. Phantasy Star: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/435/435790p1.html Monaco GP: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/436/436104p1.html Fantasy Zone: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/436/436105p1.html And here's the original press release containing the other upcoming games in the series: December 03, 2002 - At a press conference in Tokyo today, Sega and D3 Publisher announced the Sega Ages series of budget titles for the Japanese market. Set to be published by the newly established 3D-Ages company (given birth in October by Sega and D3), this series brings classic Sega titles to new life on next generation consoles at 2500 yen a piece. The series will kick off in Summer of 2003 with its first round of four titles: Space Harrier (1985, arcade), Fantasy Zone (1986, arcade), Phantasy Star (1987, Master System), and Golden Axe (1989, arcade). Future titles will follow at currently undisclosed dates, with the second batch including Monaco GP (1979, arcade), Alex Kidd in Miracle World (1986, Master System), Gain Ground (1988, arcade), Bonanza Brothers (1990, arcade) and Streets of Rage (1991, Genesis). A third batch will include Phantasy Star 2 (1989, Genesis), Virtua Racing (1992, arcade), Phantasy Star: End of the Millenium (1993, Genesis) and Last Bronx (1996, Saturn). Currently, all games are set for the PS2, but judging from 3D-Ages' comments, releases on other platforms could be a possiblity. These games aren't just ports, with 3D-Ages modifying the graphics, gameplay and sound to take advantage of the new technology at their hands. Space Harrier, for instance, will be redone in full polygons, ditching the sprite scaling of the original. Phantasy Star's maps, 3D dungeons, battle system, items and characters are all being changed for the PS2, and the results can be seen through the screens on the media page. The game seems to now run in high resolution and bares little resemblence to the original. Specifics on the changes planned for the other two games haven't been mentioned yet, but Sega does refer to them as being released as completely new titles. Given the new look of Phantasy Star, we can't wait to see all the games! In related news -- or perhaps it's unrelated and we're just not aware of it -- Sega also unveiled its CoolCool brand of re-releases for the Xbox, a similar series that deals with remakes of Sega Dreamcas titles. See IGNXbox for the full story on that. There's no word yet from Sega of America on a possible stateside release for these titles, although in establishing its relationship with D3 Publisher, Sega did state that certain D3 games would appear in America. Check back soon for more.
