That's why I was scared shitless last season in Angel, when Lorne all of a sudden showed up in the credits in the middle of the season. I was practically shouting NOOOO! Not Lorne!

Yeah, I reacted the *exact* same way fazzle. Joss can really mess around with the openings now to build up tension. If you haven't seen Firefly, watch the pilot episode. You'll see what I mean.

Why are we using spoilers? I hate them in Angel and Buffy threads...

 

There isn't some good news from the ratings report for Angel.

 

Angel has averaged a 4.5 so far this season, ranked 102 out of 126.

 

This is bad news, in my opinion because they are the sixth highest rated show on the WB. I think the WB wanted a higher rating than that to keep the show.

 

I'll go through my old Entertainment Weeklys to find Angel's average rating from last year.

Okay, Angel averaged a 3.7 last season and was ranked 139 out of 159.

 

They are up .8 from last year, but I think WB wanted more than that...

 

The critics do love the show though, so maybe that will help.

The thing I fear is if WB were to pull the plug without a good amount of warning. It would suck to end the show without some big resolution to the story. I know Joss used to say how he wanted to end every season of Buffy as if it could be the last (sans seasons Four and Six), because he knew the possibility of not being renewed was there.

Even with season four, he thought the series could have been canceled.

 

Oh god, if the WB cancels the show without it ending, I'd be one pissed off person.

As far as what advertisers care about, the # of total viewers isn't quite as important as the all-powerful 18-34 male demographic. Since there's an overall decline in this demo from last season, and since Angel actually managed to be one of the few shows to improve in this area, at least at the beginning of the season, things aren't quite as bad as Mole seems to think.

 

Also, Wanda/Kristen from E! mentioned a couple of weeks ago that according to "her sources", the WB is happy with the ratings increase this season and that a season 6 renewal is likely. I'd take whatever she says with a grain of salt (her nickname is Wrongda, after all), but it's worth mentioning.

Good point areacode.

 

I have no idea where to get numbers for 18-34 demographic though.

The demo numbers are hard to get, since places like futon critic, Mediaweek and Zap2It just report the total overnight/fast national/final national ratings. I have to rely on other people to analyze the demo breakdowns.

There has to be a place somewhere to get those numbers.

 

I wish I could subscribe to Nielson somehow. I know for radio rating, Arbitron, you have to be in the radio business to get the rating reports.

Actually Superstar, there is a Buffy thread, but it went off the page some time ago.

 

And I wouldn't call the end of season 4 a resolution, Cavi. If anything, it was building up to season 5, because for once Joss knew that they had one more season at least. But the other seasons ended with a sense of finality.

 

Oh, and I just got Firefly. Can't wait to try it out.

Yeah, that's what I meant. That seasons Four and Six didn't have the same sort of resolution that the others had.

 

Even though I'm a fan of Season Six and happy that the show continued, I still think "The Gift" would have been the best finale for the series.

Ya know, I think about that everytime I see the damn episode. "Wow, that was just amazing.....they should have ended the series here. WAIT! Noooo, I love season 6 sooo, I am glad they kept it going."

 

I have a much longer thought than that in my brain, but lets not get into it.

Yes, season 2 didn't have much of ending to it.

 

Since we are talking about season finales, why don't we do the annual season finale list? Since we have nothing better to talk about until Angel starts next week, I think it is next week.

Hmm...

It's really hard to know where to place Restless, if I had to watch one ep now, I'd probably watch that but at the same time, it isn't a great finale. So in terms of finales and what their purpose is, start my list from number 2.

I was watching some of Angel yesterday night - it was the episode from Season 4 where Faith comes back and fights Angelus... I couldn't give a rat's ass... DAMN YOU FIREFLY!!!!!!!

Well, Firefly is just so damned superior in every single aspect, that when I watch the "other" shows, I can't help but feel I'm watching a "lesser" product...

 

Hopefully that will change when the new episodes come out.

I agree completely.

 

It's funny that the last new ep of Angel was SOOOOOOOOO good...but then I discovered Firefly in the off time....and now can't get up for more Angel.
