Guest Vitamin EC Report post Posted February 14, 2004 I'm normally of the persuasion that petitions mean jack shit but... http://www.petitiononline.com/ai5d0162/petition.html Nearly 8,000 signatures already. Kind of numbers that might just get noticed.
BorneAgain 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 Seriously, fuck you WB. God, I hope they can get on another network before its too late. There are too many storyline threads that can't be resolved in this short amount of time.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 I just signed the petition and when I looked to see where it was, there were 20 more signatures added. Yep, just refreshed the screen and 20 more... 11537 is me. We're at 11578. It's been 2 minutes. *Reloads* 10 more just added.

Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 Hey, maybe Angel will be human and go to see Buffy, but then get run over by a Semi. That's how Boreanaz said he wanted "Angel" to end. He'd turn human, walk outside...and get run over by a bus. Anyway, yeah, I signed the petition this morning and it was at 8000, two hours later there had been 3000 more. This is insane...and even though it's doubtful, I hope it'll get us heard. I just watched "Offspring", "Quickening" and "Lullaby" again, and Angel has officially surpassed Buffy for me. There's so much they could do with it, it CAN'T end.

Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 A conventional petition like this won't do anything - people who are really interested in saving the show should think about some sort of in-your-face petition that can't be ignored, like when fans of Roswell sent in those thousands of bottles of tobasco sauce to protest its cancellation. The tobasco actually had something to do with the show, though. Angel...uh...coffee mugs loaded up with warm blood, I guess.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 You can't deny that 12,000 signatures in one day is impressive. Do I expect it to do anything? No. Do I hope? Yes. Is it worth me adding my name to it? Yes.
Guest JMA Report post Posted February 14, 2004 I signed. I'm not sure it'll help, but it's worth a shot. I'm sure networks such as TNT, Sci-Fi, FOX, FX, and even UPN would be interested in nabbing "Angel." Anyone else find it odd that both "Buffy" and "Angel" both lasted five seasons on the WB? Guest Vitamin EC Report post Posted February 14, 2004 Greenwalt went out of his way to say the WB and FOX in the same breathe though, I get the impression that it isn't just the WB giving up on the show but FOX as well. Which is strange because whatever you say about FOX, they seem pretty switched on when it comes to revenue outside of advertising, I'm sure despite the bad ratings, Angel makes good money in DVD sales and international rights. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 You can't deny that 12,000 signatures in one day is impressive. Do I expect it to do anything? No. Do I hope? Yes. Is it worth me adding my name to it? Yes. Oh, it's very impressive, and I of course signed it too. It's just that the WB knows full well that 2 million people watch Angel every week - the ratings tell them that. Apparently it's not enough. If this were to keep up at a pace of 12,000 signatures a day for a month, then yeah, maybe they'd realize how committed the fan following is. But you have to think it's going to drop off. Additionally, it's so easy to set up a petition on the internet, and it takes very little effort to sign your name to one - you can do it in less than a minute. This is why the Roswell campaign worked: when thousands of bottles of tobasco sauce showed up at the studio doorstep, execs realized that people had to leave their house, buy a unique item, package it, and pay money to ship it, all for the sake of a mere TV show. It's a much more visceral committment to a show's well-being than typing your name from your bedroom and clicking "Sign." I expect some kind of idea to come out of the Angel internet community in a few days - I've already heard bottles of hair gel bandied about, with notes akin to "We'll help you defray the costs of producing Angel and keeping David's hair standing." Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 Maybe, now that its confirmed to be the last season, SMG will take time off of making hit movies like Scooby freakin' Doo to see Angel one last time. Or, if there is a movie next year, she could make an apperance. Either way, this sucks.
Mole 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 Well, I take the day off yesterday from TSM. I just sat around all day and watched season 3 of Angel. I was watching "Loyalty" and have never seen the ending of the episode. Angel is all calm and it looks like he is going to let everything slide with Wes. Then BAM MOTHERFUCKER he goes fuckin CRAZY. Right then and there, Angel passed Buffy as my favorite show of all time. I then come here, and I always come to this thread first. What do I see? Angel being cancelled. Call me weird or whatever, but a tear almost came to my eye and I barely ever cry anymore. In a way, it is kind of good the way this season is going. I have faith in Joss, I know he will end it well. I do hope that Angel DOESN'T become human. The way I look at the series and the character of Angel, is that he never can be happy. The guy is the most viciouis vampire ever, he killed tons of people over the course of 100+ years. He has only had his mission for 8 years, that shouldn't make up for what has done in the past. The series should end with Angel, saving someone, and walking away. That's all I have to say for now.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 The petition still seems to be clicking at about 10 signatures per minute. If that pace keeps up for a while this petition could get big enough to get notice. I'm #11798
Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 I just want to know why WB let Joss know so late in the season. From what RRR says, they're about to get into a BIG story arc, but if they have ending the series on TOP of that to worry about, there's a problem.
BlackFlagg 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 He probably has something lined up, I'm sure he realized there was a strong chance the show wouldn't get picked up by WB for another season especially after going throguh it with Buffy before
Mole 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2004 Well maybe James Marsters will find a great role and people will finally notice him as a great actor. And I am sure Joss will get work.
dubq 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2004 Is it true that after 100 episodes, a series becomes eligible for FULL syndication and therefore the network can sell the previous 100 shows instead of spending money on new ones? Could be one of the WB's selfish reasons.. I mean, christ, they could've done this at a better time, say before this season was written/filmed? Or at least say, "Okay guys, season six is going to be the last one, so wrap it up." You know? So at least the fans will get some closure. I'm really hoping that UPN or SpikeTV sees the value of this show and swoops in for the save. I mean, the marketing campaign for SpikeTV alone would write itself! Not to mention it'd be a hell of a lot better than having to watch 12 different of airings of VIP or Blind Date per day...
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2004 Joss posted at the Bronze Beta. I copied the text from here since it hasn't made it into the VIP archives yet. joss says: (Sat Feb 14 22:31:16 2004) [Edit/Delete] Some of you may have heard the hilarious news. I thought this would be a good time to weigh in. to answer some obvious questions: No, we had no idea this was coming. Yes, we will finish out the season. No, I don't think the WB is doing the right thing. Yes, I'm grateful they did it early enough for my people to find other jobs. Yes, my heart is breaking. When Buffy ended, I was tapped out and ready to send it off. When Firefly got the axe, I went into a state of denial so huge it may very well cause a movie. But Angel... we really were starting to feel like we were on top, hitting our stride -- and then we strode right into the Pit of Snakes 'n' Lava. I'm so into these characters, these actors, the situations we're building... you wanna know how I feel? Watch the first act of "The Body." As far as TV movies or whatever, I'm not thinking that far ahead. I actually hope my actors and writers are all too busy. We always planned this season finale to be a great capper to the season and the show in general. (And a great platform for a new season, of course.) We'll proceed ahead as planned. I've never made mainstream TV very well. I like surprises, and TV isn't about surprises, unless the surprise is who gets voted off of something. I've been lucky to sneak this strange, strange show over the airwaves for as long as I have. I don't FEEL lucky, but I understand that I am. Thanks all for your support, your community, and your perfectly sane devotion. It's meant a lot. I regret nothing (except the string of grisley murders in the 80's -- what was THAT all about?) Remember the words of the poet: "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN' SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Damn." See you soon."
Guest JMA Report post Posted February 15, 2004 Ugh. I feel like crying. And no, I'm not ashamed to admit that. I've followed "Buffy" since it first came on, and have done the same with "Angel." This whole thing just sucks.

Guest EQ Report post Posted February 15, 2004 Think there's any chance of them getting picked up on another network?
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2004 To answer Brian's question from a while back: Yes the same thing could happen to Smallville...but the difference is Superman is a trademarked property of Warner Bros....and the WB is a Warner Bros. Station. Unlike Buffy/Angel...WB is running a show from their own company. Plus...it does great ratings. They didn't cancel 7th Heaven when it was their #1 ratings grabber...and it was surprising to say the least that they did off Buffy since it was their most marketable show and really...the flagship. Don't look for Smallville to end until WB wants it to.
Mole 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2004 As much as I will miss Angel, the show did get low ratings. Even though the show is good TV, that doesn't make the network money. Think about the TV shows that critics love and got low ratings usually got cancelled. I can think of Freeks and Geeks, Undeclared, Boomtown and now Angel. 24 is doing really well in the ratings, so that is why it hasn't gotten canceled. I thought 24 was going to get cancelled after the first season, but I was wrong. Anyone think of any shows that critics loved that got canceled? And like JMA said, I almost shed a tear. I said to my friend Brad, "Hey, Angel got canceled. Yeah, I almost shed a tear and I am manly enough to say it." With the whole ratings thing, I'm going to check it out later tonight and see where Angel fits in for ratings, and other WB shows.
