The Dames 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2003 No. No it's not at all. I am now doubting as to whether or not you've read the books. They did a good job, sometimes a great job, but they were not as faithful as you say. I have not read the books, you're right. But if the movies were a far, far cry from the books then the uproar would be much bigger than it is now. Peter Jackson has taken liberties with the story in order to make it movie-friendly, but fans who haven't read the books, such as myself, wouldn't know that...so if something happens in the book, it may or may not be in the film and it COULD be a spoiler. That's all I care about...I don't want to be spoiled. Dames
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2003 So I guess this begs the question: What is the precise definition of spoiler? Is it mentioning something that 100% happens in a movie, or is it saying vague rumors as well? Anyway, from here on I'll use the tags on anything that might remotely give away stuff. Here's a wild one for you: Spoiler (Highlight to Read): I emailed the reporter at Ain't It Cool News who had some Sauron rumors (the stuff about him fighting Aragorn, or not showing up at all, etc). Anyway, the latest bizarre rumor is that Sauron may well show up at Mt. Doom to confront Frodo and try to take back the ring. The logistics of this sound a bit difficult to figure, but if it's done right it could be cool.
Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2003 Spoiler (Highlight to Read): Well, he sort of does. When Frodo puts on the ring, you see Sauron like when he put it on at Amon Hen. This is when Sauron finally realizes what has happened, and sends his entire army to get the ring. He can't show up in person without completely changing what happens. The whole Frodo/Gollum confrontation over the ring couldn't take place if Sauron was there.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read): I read that Sauron shows up in armour just like we see him in the prologue and fights Aragorn, w/ Sauron about to kill Aragorn but at that moment Gollum falls into the fires and the ring is destroyed, thus Aragorn's ass is saved. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2003 Spoiler (Highlight to Read): Nah, the Sauron/Aragorn stuff has all but been proven to be a false rumor. theonering.net and Ain't It Cool News have both debunked this for the most part. It was originally in an early draft however, might have even been filmed and Jackson didn't like it, so he cut it. Kahran, I think that the whole Frodo/Gollum stuff with Gollum biting his finger and taking the ring could happen with Sauron being there. Sauron could perhaps go for the ring, Gollum lunges out and bites Frodo's finger right as Sauron is about to grasp it, Gollum then falls into the volcano. Sauron is like "Aw shit" and then vaporizes/explodes. I think that would be a helluva ending.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2003 Spoiler (Highlight to Read): I see no problem w/ Frodo having the ring bitten off his finger, Gollum slips and goodbye Mr. Ring. PJ probably thought that would be an anti-climactic ending and changed it, though I don't really have a problem w/ the ending that JRR wrote.
Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2003 Spoiler (Highlight to Read): No. There is no reason for Sauron to go to Mt. Doom, unless he knows the Ring is there. In which case, he gets the Ring, movie over. There is no chance that Frodo, Sam & Gollum would be able to fight him, and he wouldn't be able to get there in the few seconds from when Frodo puts on the Ring till it gets destroyed.
