The PCN Present: Freedom Fight 2003 Review....

Recommended Posts

The show sounded good, but in all honesty, I really disliked the format of using all three guys' comments. It made it really confusing. Sometimes I wasn't sure what match each guy was talking about b/c it they were dropping names from throughout the card.

Jon, have you been reading the past PCN reviews? Because we've been using the same format for a while. We've started out with a DVDVR-ripoff type deal, but any thoughts on modifying the style would be welcome.

Anyway, any more thoughts on the show? This was probably the most fun review I've done since the ROH live report with Malibu.

Yeah, i've read most of the past ones, but just haven't commented untiul now, I dont' think. I'v never been a huge fan of the DVDR style, so it's prolly no surprise I'm not a big fan of this style. like I said - show sounded great, but I just wasn't too hot on the style.

Great review guys. I apologize again for having my schedule get the better of me and not being able to finish up the show to do a review.

Jay, please don't rap for me anytime soon...;)

I haven't seen the War Games match but I may try go ahead and get it to judge for myself. A couple of questions first though:

- How does this stack up to other War Games? The 1992 version ranks as the top one I've seen. It was excellent in so many ways, yet I don't think I would even declare it near perfect or hand out 5-stars. Putting all time differences and wrestler-biases aside, do you honestly consider the Freedom Fight one to be the best War Games? If so, what makes it better then the 1992 version or 1987 one?

- I didn't read overly carefully so I may have missed this being mentioned, but there is only one ring right? Does that hamper it at all? I have a hard time seeing eight guys in a cage (especially with guys like Iceberg and Hernandez) and the match NOT become cluttered. Is it just that it doesn't become too cluttered or is it really perfectly fine?

Don't mind me if I am skeptical, its just a War Games match that features a Michinoku driver two minutes in and contains a sunset flip powerbomb from the top onto a chair seems a little too spot-driven for me. Not to mention some of the other elements mentioned above.

Answers would be helpful so I know weather to get the match and know exactly what to expect going in.

1) The '92 version squeaks this out barely due to overall higher "workrate", but I think this one, when it came to building drama, was the most superior of all the War Games. Both, however, should be required viewing material for all wrestling fans.

2) Yeah, they only used one ring. I'm surprised at how they do it, but they honestly never really got clustered up besides the one point I mentioned where Iceberg walked right past a submission on one of his teammates he should have broken. If you really want to see how to cluster a ring, watch the TNA War Games.

3) They did do some really big spots, but they made sure to build to them. It's not like the sunset flip bomb had no rhyme or reason; it was a weapon that AJ Styles used to take out Justice in the 2001 War Games, so Jimmy used it for himself in this one. The superplex spot came early enough in the match that Onyx wasn't worn out, and he was going full-tilt, so he was "going on all adreneline".

Hope those helped answer your questions.
