The Los Angeles Clippers today signed free agent forward Glen Rice, it was announced by Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor.

Over his 14-year NBA career, Rice has tallied 18.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 35.4 minutes per game, while converting 6,754-14,791 FG (.457), 3,208-3,796 FT (.845) and 1,554-3,868 3FG (.402).

“In Glen we are getting an experienced veteran who is considered one of the purest shooters who has ever played the game,” stated Baylor. “He can play the shooting guard or small forward position for us and his ability to hit the open shot will spread the defense and help our low-post players.”

Rice recorded 9.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 24.7 minutes in 62 games played for the Houston Rockets last season. He also connected on 196-457 FG (.429) and 101-254 3FG (.398) on the year.

Known as one of the best long range shooters in NBA history, Rice currently ranks third on the all-time NBA list in three-pointers made (1,554), fifth in three-pointers attempted (3,868) and is tied for 14th with a career three-point percentage of .402. Rice also ranks 10th among active NBA players and 48th all-time with 18,270 career points.

The fourth overall selection by the Miami Heat in the 1989 NBA Draft, Rice was a member of the University of Michigan’s 1989 NCAA Championship team, averaging 25.6 points and 6.3 rebounds over his senior season.

Rice remains the Heat’s all-time leading scorer with 9,248 points as well as the Hornet’s all-time leader in scoring averaged with 23.5 points per game. He also ranks third on the Hornet’s all-time list in scoring with 5,651 points. In addition, Rice’s averages of 15.9 points and 4.1 rebounds during the 1999-00 season, helped the Lakers win the 2000 NBA Championship. A three-time All-Star, Rice took home MVP honors in the 1997 All-Star Game after scoring 26 points in the game, setting All-Star records with 20 points in the third quarter and 24 total points in the second half.

Great pickup for the Clips. Rice gives the Clips a legitamate outside threat whose size and experience provide a welcome addition to this promising young and talented club.

He must feel bad after getting traded to Utah only to be let go because they needed to count his salary to go above the minimum salary requirement in the NBA, but didn't actually want him to play for them.

Worst team in the NBA this year=Utah Jazz. They'll be worse than the Clippers, Cavaliers and Nuggets...

As probably the lone TSM Jazz fan, I can say I am totally embarassed with the Jazz's off-season's attitudes to make acquisitions. They will be terrible, but I have a feeling SOMEHOW they will not have the worst record this year. Jerry Sloan really likes his young guys or he'd be back in Illinois now. This team is bad though so I predict he gets fired after either killing a referee or Ostertag.

As a Clipper fan I'm really excited about the signing, the team had no shooters at all and now we got one of the best.

This was a really good day for the Clippers and their fans because not only did they sign Rice but their rookie Chris Kaman today scored 17 points in 21 minutes on 6 of 8 shooting in his first game.

I have a good feeling about this team, I think they will compete for the final playoff spot in the west.

His days of being "one of the top shooters in the league" are clearly over.

The fact that he's been passed around the league like a hot potato the last 3 or 4 years should tell you all you need to know.

I agree, he would have been a good signing three years ago, but I really do not think Rice will get a lot of playing time, or at least be productive. And I'll spare the wife bitching about playing time jokes.

He is still a good shooter and more importantly he is in the best shape of his life. According to the article in the L.A. Times he lost 25 pounds during the off season.

Not saying you're lying, but after seeing him with Houston last season, I'll believe it when I see it.

i don't think the nuggets and cavs are the worst teams this year they have pretty good teams. i rekon the three teams which wont do really well this season will be new york, utah and LA Clips.

Some people have obviously not been reading my posts and following all of Elgin baylor and Mr. Donald T. Sterling's moves this off-season.
