It's no coincidence that the Rams and the Cardinals are both top 10 in payroll in their respective sports. Once again...They have owners that give a shit about winning...who are willing to spend.

ANY other team that wanted him would have a choice before the Yankees. Did they purchase him or not though? Perhaps other teams couldn't afford him and didn't want to get hit with his contract (which I believe is about $2mill) if nobody else claimed him. Boone's contract is about 2 million dollars...Pittsburgh could have him but they spend 6 millon on Derek fn lee...

But who is to guarantee that these MLB welfare queens would do anything with the money besides pocket it? Well that's the thing, there is going to be revenue sharing now (teams hit with the luxury tax don't get it though). Only problem is there's no set amount an owner has to pay to field a team...so the cheapos can pocket it all if they want.

I'm using the Pirates because I'm most familiar with their situation. So, show me a report for the past three years that the Pittsburgh Pirates have been making money.

Bored Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 From what I've read and heard however the Giants have most of the rights to exclusively air their games in many of the Oakland area communities thus canceling out some revenue that Oakland could be getting. Along with the fact that the Colliseum is built near an industrial park from what I was told thus making it more and more uninviting every year now Damn I knew I shouldn't have posted because now I'll be in this topic all night. Anyways the neighborhood the Coliseum is in is just as bad as it was 30 years ago so I don't think that has anything to do with it and most people access the Coliseum by freeway so you there is no need to go through any bad part of Oakland to get to the game. The A's attendance has been up the last five years anyways so fans are showing up. The advantage that the Giants have on the A's is, forgetting Pac Bell/now SBC Park as the A's outdrew the Giants over the years while they played in Candlestick, is that the have a lot more exposure through the media due to the fact that the #1 newspaper in the Bay Area the San Francisco Chronicle owns part of the team, as does local channel KTVU (Fox Affiliate), and the sports talk radio station in the Bay Area KNBR also owns part of the team. The Giants ownership has made no secret that they want the A's out of Oakland and the Bay Area all together. That's the advantage the Yankees have over other teams is their t.v. and radio revenue is so much larger than any other team in baseball and that's why they can spend so much.

The Devil Rays are losing money and their financial charts(shown before the new collective bargaining agreement on CNN) showed they would be bankrupt and done by 06 if there wasn't revenue sharing Of course spending all that money on Boggs, Canseco, McGriff(notice he hasn't updated the commercial for defensive drills from when he was a Padre?), Juan Guzman, etc didn't help their cause...but you just wanted to know a team not making money

Bobby Crosby. Eh Crosby could be hit or miss. The problem is they have no one to replace Chavez after next year and then it will be hard to keep cranking guys out like Harden to repalce the Big Three. But that all being said its because their owner Steve Schott is unwilling to spend the money not because of where the A's play. The A's make money every year which is a fine way to make a regular business but your gonna own a professional sports franchise you have to expect to lose some money to keep your team competitive.

In all seriousness and its all hindsight too is that Giambi wasn't worth the money he signed for. $18 million a year is too much for a guy who will likely spend most of the rest of his career as a DH.

LA has nearly four million and they spend like crazy and they dont win either.

For example, lets say the Chicago Tribune, who owns the Cubs, also operate a parking lot near the stadium. They charge for parking on game days. This is clearly a team related profit, yet they might report it as a separate figure, thus keeping it off the Cubs' books.

He can say he was insulted with them not wanting to place the No-Trade clause in there but I'm guessing the extra $7mill a year the Yankees were offering had more to do with him leaving
