Sporting fan triumphs

The Pats 2001 season without a doubt.

* They start the season by losing to Cincinatti. They lost to the BENGALS.

* Drew Bledsoe- the franchise quarterback- is hit so hard he needs a blood transfusion to avoid dieing from internal bleeding. At this point most fans and analysts are declaring the season dead in the water.

* Suddenly, Tom Brady, the third string quarterback coming into the season steps up and starts leading the Patriots to come-from-behind victories and miraculous wins.

* Troy Brown catches a pass and gets knocked out in mid air by the defender. He comes down out of bounds, completely out cold, and still cradling the ball. The clock stops and the Pats are able to win the game.

* The Patriots get a first round bye when EVERY single thing that needs to happen does. Teams pull upsets and everyone who's supposed to lose does.

* Tom Brady is knocked silly and is forced to leave the playoff game against Pittsburgh. Out of the shadows steps the forgotten hero, Drew Bledsoe, who marches the Pats down the field and to the game winning score in his first, and only, series since the injury.

*Snow Bowl. The most amazing atmosphere you'll ever see for a playoff game. With a Nor' Easter pounding Foxboro, the Pats benefit from an obscure "tuck rule" to stay alive. Adam Vinaterri steps up and boots two impossible feild goals in a blizzard to give the Pats the win in an amazing overtime game. Snow Angels fly after the game, and Foxboro Stadium's last game is its most famous.

* The Patriots, in a show of unity, are announced to each and every playoff game, including the Superbowl, as a unit to show their team spirit.

* The Rams tie the Superbowl with just over a minute to go. John Madden makes the infamous "I'd just take a knee and head for overtime" comment. Brady apparently doesn't get the message, driving down the field in one of the best drives of the year. Vinaterri steps up and kicks the game winning field goal, and the Pats do the impossible.

All of that, added to the post-victory rally in Boston and the ENTIRE team throwing out the first pitch at the Red Sox game, makes the most magical season in a region that's sorely lacking in magic.

MLB-

1992- Sid slid.

October 3rd, 1993- Braves beat the Rockies. Dodgers crush Salomon Torres.

1995- Tom Glavine's one hitter, Justice's 6th inning HR, Baerga flying out to Grissom. I still think about that day.

1996- The Braves outscore the Cards 32-1 in three games to go to the WS.

1999- Game 6- Braves v. Mets. One of the greatest games I've ever listened to. An emotional roller coaster back and forth...until Rogers walked Jones. I just went crazy.

2001- The Braves are left for dead after a horrible 2001 season where they somehow win the division. Everyone picks them to get killed by the Astros. The Braves end up proving all their critics wrong and sweeping them

2001- I still watch the bottom of the 9th of the World Series in Game 7 to this day.

NBA-

1992- Knicks almost upset the Bulls.

1994- Knicks FINALLY beat the Bulls (Yea so they didn't have Jordan- shut up)

1998- The Knicks knock the Heat out of the playoffs.

1999- The Knicks, ranked 8th, knock the Heat out of the playoffs. Again.

1999- The 4 point play. It OWNS you.

2002- The Nets win a thrilling Game 5 and defeat the Pacers to advance to the second round- for the first time ever.

2002- The Nets shake off a comeback by Boston and make the NBA Finals. I was just happy with that.

NHL-

1995- The Devils win the Cup and rub the neutral trap in everyones faces.

2001- The Leafs do the impossible and sweep the Ottawa Senators. I laugh.

2002- The Canucks win Game 1 and 2 against Detrot. Let's not discuss Games 3-6.

2002- Darcy Tucker and Gary Roberts kill Michael Peca and Kenny Jonnson. I laugh.

2002- The Leafs beat the Sens. Again.

2003- The Canucks finally make it out of the first round and do it by overcoming a 3-1 deficit.

NFL-

2001- The Saints win a playoff game.

Montana to Taylor with :34 seconds left. 49ers go ahead to stay, 20-16, and win Super Bowl XXIII. Oh yeah. Just Joe being Joe, in the clutch. But man I was just so happy.

Joe again, next year: The Surgeon. Dissects the Broncos for 55 points. Super Bowl MVP for the 3rd time, and now he had beaten both Elway AND Marino in the big one. Wheeee.

Barry Bonds hitting #500 at home against The Dodgers. Game is held up for several minutes to do a ceremony... in the middle of the inning, so the Dodger fielders are forced to stand there and watch it. BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Owen Nolan calling his shot at the All-Star game in the Shark Tank on a breakaway, and blowing it right past the goalie. That was so cool...

The Clutch game winning homeruns during the 20 game win streak by Scott Hatteberg and Miguel Tejada.

There's a bunch of others, but they'd just be repeats.

NHL

Detroit's first cup in 42 years in 1997. I have never seen a city so jacked for one team winning

The repeat title was special when Konstatinov was presented with the cup after the tragic accident

NBA

The Pistons winning back to back in 89 and 90. I was a lucky 5 year old bastard when i when to a Finals game in 90. Trust me i remember this shit even though i was young

MLB

The tigers going better .500 in 1993. Just kidding, being a huge Reds fan i would have to say the upset Reds beating the favored A's in the 1990 World Series. Made a whole 4 dollars on a bet with my cousin

College Football

Michigan's national title in 1997 was unreal for me. I watched every single game start to finish and it was even more special since Coach Carr is from my hometown.

Miami finally getting back to prominece after being on probation and going on an amazing streak not losing a game in almost three seasons and winning the 2001 national title. Miami is my 2nd favorite school after michigan so it was sweet to see them come back

Other Sports and Personal Shit

The USA soccer team going from being an absolute joke in 1998 to almost knocking off a great Germany team in the 2002 World Cup

My high school team going from being the worst in the league to being the 2nd best team in our area my senior season

The Clutch game winning homeruns during the 20 game win streak by Scott Hatteberg and Miguel Tejada.

Holy shit how could I have not listed the 20th straight win as I was at the game! Good lord having to watch them blow a 11-0 lead and then win it in the 9th on a homerun was just unreal. The entire crowd was collectively punched in the stomach when the Royals tied it up in the top of 9th and then just went fucking crazy when Hatteberg homered to win it. Great chapter in Moneyball about that game.

-As for the Leafs, well, I guess them sweeping the Sens in '01 was nice, if only because NO ONE gave them any chance at all, as they played like shit for the last few months of the season, coupled with the fact that the Sens swept the season series from them.

I just wanted to add on to this. At my house, we had this little pool-type thing where we would pick the winners of the series and how many games it would take. I honestly didn't think the Leafs had a shot in hell, especially since they had sucked the meat missle down the stretch, but I couldn't not choose them, so I picked them to win it in 4. I got shit on by everyone, even worse because I'm the only Leafs fan in my family. My dad (a huge Sens fan) was out of town for game 4, he was lucky.

Probably the happiest I've ever been after any Leafs' series.

MLB: 1996- Padres sweep Dodgers to win div. title

1998- Padres win NL championship

2002- Giants almost win it all

NFL: 1992- Chargers rally from 0-4 start to win division, then shutout Chiefs

1994: Chargers win division, Stoyanovich (sp?) goes wide right, and O'Donnell chokes giving SD it's first trip to Super bowl

Personally being in attendance when Niners finally beat Cowboys.

I had mixed feelings about the Super Bowl, as I liked both teams, but wanted the Chargers to at least look respectable.

1998- Elway and Denver winning one for the AFC. Arizona upsetting Dallas, Niners finally beating GB (of course the packer fans had to bitch about the refs when they always get away with shit)

NHL: 1994: Sharks upsetting Detroit and taking Toronto to 7.

College: 1996- ASU's run to the Rose Bowl

1997- U of A's national title
