Guest Agent of Oblivion

Jagermeister Tour 2003

Guest Agent of Oblivion

Words cannot describe the carnage that was in Indianapolis last night. A whole battalion of white alpha males ages 16-30 clad in black utterly razed the joint.

Pre-show, in a chilly parking lot, I met both Dave Lombardo and Tom Araya, which was fairly interesting, if brief. Araya signed some shit and placated my fandom for a moment, while Lombardo was eager to get out of the wind and light drizzle.

Seeing as how I had one of the first 50 tickets purchased to this show, my comrade and I both got in a few minutes earlier than everyone else other than the half dozen people who were there, and had early tix. This allowed a quick piss, and guaranteed spot on the rail. I was actually the first person through the ticket line. Glorious.

The Venue, The Murat Theater, was par excellence as always. Top notch lighting and sound, with capable people running shit, and lax security.

Sworn Enemy was a perfectly acceptable opening act that did nothing special, and nothing actively bad. Got a few people hopping around while the rest got drunk with haste and determination. I found the bass player interesting, as he had a leg in an air cast, a decal of Bruce Lee on his bass (which was swank), and a stylized cartoon of a chinaman on some of his other gear. The whole band busted ass, and fulfilled their purpose in life. They even broke down their own gear, as is the life of an up and coming act on a tour with Slayer. Thumbs up.

Arch Enemy absolutely blew my fucking mind. Really good dueling swedes on geetar, a colossus of a nordic motherfucker abusing a Rickenbacker, Lemmy-style, tight drumming, and Angela Gossow being one of the current best vocalists in metal. Stage presence out the ass, and a multitude of screams and growls at her disposal. Any five foot nothing gorgeous German strawberry blonde than can growl lower than me has my total respect and awe. A short, if incredible, set that covered their new material pretty well, and added some nice leads and jamming. Fantastic performance. As soon as these guys get a couple more albums under their belt with her at the helm, they'll be headlining tours like this, no doubt in my mind.

Hatebreed was everything I wanted them to be, loud and aggressive. I've never been a huge fan of these guys per se, but I like a good portion of it. Easy stuff to get into, plenty of groove breakdowns and anthemic lyrics. The guitarist bears a slight resemblance to Kurrgan, and has brass knuckles tattooed on his neck. Lots of energy and crowd participation. Good set.

Slayer, in the span of a little over an hour, covered their 20 year careers with literally their top material, and Reign in Blood in its entirety. The crowd was absolutely batshit as soon as they hit the stage until about a minute after they'd left. The set included, but was not limited to (no order):

Captor of Sin

Dead Skin Mask

Sex. Murder. Art.

Hell Awaits

Necrophilia

Darkness of Christ/Disciple (opened their set)

Payback

Stain of Mind

Mandatory Suicide

All of Reign In Blood (closed).

Their stage setup was phenomenal as well. Great use of blacklight reactive paint, scrawling "God Hates Us All" and a bunch of other demonic shit on their amps and backdrop, which was invisible under normal light. This segued into a chapel backdrop, with a cherub that had a blacklight demonic skeleton inside of it.

The final setup was just dropping banners and tapestries with the sword pentagram on them. Great performance, great use of visuals, great everything.

See this tour if you value any sort of heavy music.

The jager was flowing as jagermeister can flow. Yes, they had video of jackassery and motorcycle stunts before the show. An amusing distraction for those who had been waiting for hours.

They also had some chicks in Jager clothing chucking out shirts, hats, and other plunder. I got plenty.

Hate's a strong word...poor Agent did have to sit through Sworn Enemy.

I find it funny that Sworn Enemy and Arch Enemy played the same show...very odd to find two bands with parctically the same name.

The latter Enemy was FAR superior, although Sworn Enemy was nothing offensive. That was my first real exposure to the band outside of just a couple tracks. They had good energy, and busted ass, so no complaints as far as openers are concerned.

Arch Enemy did a little of both. The closed with "Ravenous," did "Heart of Darkness" (complete with swank swedish jammery), and they picked around on "Dead Bury Their Dead."

I don't have Anthems of Rebellion yet, because I'm a DUMBASS, but I'm purchasing it later this morning, based solely on their performance. Really impressed me.

......I fucking hate you Agent.........

Hello, dipshit, the tour is on RIGHT NOW, are you one of those poor saps that doesn't have any close locations? Where the hell do you live? I'll find ya somethin' so you quit bitching.

I love Arch Enemy, especially their albums with Johann Liiva on vocals. I really liked Wages of Sin and think that with Angela they are a great live band, but Anthems of Rebellion was not that good. I find its overrated and generic. I liked the album, but it had little relistenabillity.

Bah. You beligerent fuck, I think it should be readily apparent that I would go if the chance came up.

However, since you were apparently so close to the action(based on the other thread), did you happen to collect a little bit of Angela's sweat that you could maybe sell me? Purely for scientific purposes of course...

Why the hate for Agent and not for Laz, when Laz saw the same tour earlier?

I should give you such a punching.

I'd give you some of her fluids that spattered on me, but it's all been methodically massaged into my groin. I also shook Tom Araya's hand with the same hand I masturbate with. Does that make me gay?

Regarding the new Arch Enemy, is it even more samey than most swedish bands can get? In a good way or bad way, I guess is what I'm asking. Do they shred and swede around on the guitars through the whole thing, or did they try to make something commercially viable that sounds boring? I'm getting it regardless, just curious of some other opinions. I've heard it kicked righteous ass from others.

These were my biggest problems

1. The lyrics weren't that good. Wages of Sin had very good lyrics. This one didn't.

2. Musically, some of the songs sounded the same, and a couple riffs sound like they were from Wages of Sin...like they recycled. I know what Arch Enemy is supposed to sound like and all, I know their style, but too many songs sounded the same and didn't stick out. They also used a Korn like riff on one song too.
