CFL Playoffs

Recommended Posts

The CFL playoffs start this Sunday, culminating with the 91st Grey Cup game November 16 in Regina. The Eastern Division semi-final between the Argonauts and Lions going at 4 PM ET in Toronto with the winner playing at Olympic Stadium in Montreal next week against the Alouettes. Also, the Western Division semi-final between the Blue Bombers and the Roughriders at 7 PM ET in Winnipeg with that winner of that game going on to play Edmonton.

Predictions:

In the East, it really depends on what Toronto team shows up. They can be quite good (like they were against Montreal a few weeks back) or they can be really bad (like they had been against Ottawa the game before). I think BC will beat them, though, and go on to lose to Montreal in the East final.

Out West, I have a feeling that Saskatchewan will beat the Bombers but lose in the West final to Edmonton, bringing about a rematch of last year's Grey Cup game. Edmonton will probably win, continuing the recent trend of teams winning the Grey Cup the year after their city hosts the game (Montreal last year, Calgary the year before that, and BC in 2000).

I think they reported Dickenson as being out for BC. Might be good news for the Argos, but I think that they'll pull another vanishing act...

I'd love to see the Lions reach the Grey Cup. For some reason, I just get a kick out of a Vancouver-based team representing the EAST in a sporting final. Still, Montreal (as usual) remains the team to beat in the East.

They really ought to throw out the whole 2 divisions and just go one league.

Anyways...

In the East

No Dave Dickenson = No Win for the Lions. I'm thinking there will be a little Pinball magic and Toronto will pull this one off. Of course they will follow up a strong performance by going on to get slaughtered by Montreal.

In the West

Can Winnipeg actually (ever) live up to their potential? I see them beating the Green Riders. Just too many weapons on offence and one of them (Jones, Stegall, Roberts, or Sellars) is bound to have a big game at home. Of course, the team will move onto Edmonton and lose, due to Charles Roberts not being able to run the ball at Commonwealth.

Apparently they wanted to install some new surface in Montreal for the East final, but they couldn't get all the pieces in time (they were over in Europe, I heard). For whatever reason, the Expos won't let them play on their surface, so they have to use an older, harder one than they'd like, so whichever team wins the East semi-final will have to play on the hard surface in Toronto this week (again, the Argos can't use the same surface as the Blue Jays) and again next week in Montreal, while whoever gets out of the West will get to play the West final on the real stuff out in Edmonton.

It might not end up meaning anything, but you never know.

Well, I'm batting .500 so far. Both games were pretty good, I thought the 'Riders were going to blow that big lead they had on Winnipeg, though, but they held on. I still think we'll see an Edmonton/Montreal re-match, though I wouldn't mind seeing Toronto vs. Saskatchewan, either.
