Ace309 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2003 I don't remember any of the details of this, except that a few weeks after Cena's debut they shot an angle at Smackdown where he came out wearing surfer-era Sting-style facepaint. It never ended up airing, obviously. What was up with that?

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted November 19, 2003 There were several net writers that were comparing him to a young Sting during his first month or so. Might have been a play on that.
ChrisMWaters 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2003 ...you know, if Cena dyed his hair blonde with that, he'd almost look like a young Sting.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 19, 2003 Also factor in that in his first major match...The #1 heel (Angle) gave him a huge rub ala Flair for sting in 1988
Downhome 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2003 I've said since DAY ONE, that the guy could play "the new Sting" perfectly.

They should have simply put Sting over Hogan. Send Hogan away for a few months...Have Sting dismantle the NWO one by one and as you remember Bret arrived then... Guest Choken One Report post Posted November 19, 2003 The Angle was OVER at Starrcade theroectly. So not much else could have been done from that Angle and it having more success... The Angle was a complete success except for that final night of what SHOULD have been the blowoff.

The Angle was a complete success except for that final night of what SHOULD have been the blowoff. The "blowoff" ruined the entire feud for me, it killed all of those months of buildup. After that happened, the fans really began to sour on WCW and all involved in the angle. Had Bret not got in the way, had Sting pinned Hogan 1-2-3 in the middle of the ring without ANY question, then WCW would have been on a much smoother road. Downhome 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2003 Here is the short story. The moment I saw John Cena, I thought he looked just like Sting without face paint. I went on and on and on talking about it here, blah blah blah. Eventually, I was talking to a friend of mine about it, and I asked if he'd make a picture of Cena in Sting face paint, and he did so. Thus, the above picture of "The Man Called Cena" was born.

Guest krazykat72 Report post Posted November 20, 2003 the nWo itself was a far bigger angle than the Sting/Hogan saga. If you consider Sting/Hogan to be a pretty big part of that story, then it was one of the biggest, but it was probably nowhere near Hogan/Andre in terms of popularity (the numbers for WM3 and their rematch on the main event in Feb. 88 are mind boggling. Then of course, Austin/McMahon blows it out of the water. -Paul Jacobi-
