HBK/HHH at SS '02

Er.....a sledgehammer is a little bit different than a chair - which wrestlers can get hit with, but get up a minute later (OMG! NON-EXISTANT SELLING!!) - or a garbage can lid.

Ask your friend to hit you with a chair in the back. Then try a garbage lid. Then try a sledgehammer. See which one hurts you the most. I'm sure a hammer being swung with all its might would easily win.

Yep. The same sledgehammer which Goldberg blocked with his temple, and didn't even flinch?

25 minutes work with various weapons etc. = nothing

2 shots with a hammer = cripple.

Hmmmm....

To be fair, when Goldberg got hit on the head with the sledgehammer in the Elimination Chamber at SS '03, he was out cold and got pinned.

He got up when he got hit in the chin with the hammer at Unforgiven, but that's because....well....Goldberg is a shithead. Yet, he did fall like a tree initially after getting hit with it.

And a few minutes (not 25, since you're not including Shawn's offense) with various weapons = Shawn's back hurt, but not enough to put him out of the match or kill his spirit.

2 shots with a sledgehammer - SLEDGEHAMMER = equals out for a few months. Understandable.

I'm not here to justify the aftermath of the match for the next few months, but the match itself.

Too add a little of my nonimportant information, I was goofingly playing around with a sledgehammer at Wal-Mart and the son of a bitch hurt my hand by just doing a slight cuff punch with it.

Now, imagine how much it would hurt to swing the motherfucker with all your might onto someones spine.

And in real life, one or two punches can knock someone out or into a state of where the fuck am I. Every wrestler can take hundred's and pretend it's like being hit with Hulk hands. (Don't hurt at all since I wasn't effected with a punch to the balls with one of them)

BOO! MATCH SUCKS CAUSE THEY DONT SELL A PUNCH!

You know what I find funny? HBK v HHH gets ripped for its bad selling ---

But Kawada v Misawa matches --- the HOLY GRAIL of spotty selling --- have a legendary aura in some circles.

A chair will evenly spread the impact over your back (I've taken hard chairshots across the back from friends). A sledgehammer is a WHOLE different animal as all it's momentum is focused at one point. It's just common sense that the sledge would do far more damage. It's like comparing oak to balsa.

Now...having watched it again...and seeing how much HHH destroyed HBK's back...

Can someone tell me why it's ok for HBK to no sell the entire second half of the match?

I think the whole story of the match was that he beat the crap out of the Shawn who hasn't wrestled for years and years but thought he could still go, and brought out the "old" Shawn.

Or something. He goes from being like any other wrestler in a hardcore match to full HBK mode, although he loses a lot of selling the transition. Your looking for reason in the wrestling as it tells the story, but the whole story is about defying reason.

Between the thread about HHH/Rock and now this one, I'm thinking I should do a retrospective on a recent match every so often just to see how it's held up.

Suggestions?

Sure, in real life a hammer like that is deadly, but in wrestling it has been no-sold plenty, so I don't see why this particular shot was so deadly.

You are going to (rightly) get ass raped for that, so let's just say you're wrong, and move on, eh?

I love the Kawada/Misawa stuff... but I will agree that "I'll sell those kicks to the face/head drop/devestating submission as soon as I pop up and give you a lariat" is the stupidest spot in all of wrestling.

I mean how'd he do it? Adrenaline?

I'm not wrong. Much ado about getting dropped on your head and just acting like nothing happened.

If puro geeks can't handle that some people will point out the rampant flaws in their sacred cows, so be it.

I avoid the puro folder for a reason. A bunch of obnoxious, elitist, uber-geeks.

I loved the match. And I don't really care what two uptight puro pricks think of it. It entertained me. I'm smart enough to the business to see the no-selling, I just don't think it hurt the match. I don't let what I know about selling ruin a white-hot match for me. That's the WWF style. If you don't like it, shut the fuck up and go back to the puro folder, because you're not influencing anybody here.

He's not gonna get raped in this folder for that. And why are we just gonna say that he's wrong? That's a convenient way to argue your point.

SUBMISSION MOVES DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY EQUAL A "TECHNICAL" STYLE. TECHNICAL WRESTLING SHOULD BE CEREBRAL, CRISP, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WRESTLING THAT WORKS TOWARDS A DEFINITE GOAL.

I define Technical Wrestling as Wrestling with Technique (*gasp*). As in, execution and difficulty of moves. While I agree that "submissions" do not always = "technical wrestling", what you discribed as technical wrestling sounds more like "Artistic" value.

Yes. You are wrong. Post-97 All Japan went headrop crazy. Before then, it's the best wrestling you will see.

If it's widely available, sure.

If you mean the Iron Man HHH/Rock match, it's hard to find that fucker. Is it on any worthwhile DVDs?

No- sadly it's not on any DVDs.

I'm shocked--HBK got his Iron Man match on his DVD, but HHH doesn't have his on one?

Oh, and damn that was a quick reply. Thanks anyway, Bob.

Forget to voice my "opinions" of the actual match like it matters.

The first part of the match just bored me to tears, probably the first ten minutes to be exact. I didn't really care about HBK no selling (itsa fucking HBK! Thats like telling Ricky Steamboat not to sell) because I was caught up in the match and wanting him to beat the shit out of Trips.

Sure, it was a fun part of the match, but as a whole, I wouldn't call it 4-stars.

And Hogan/Rock still is better, even though the wrestling wasn't that good.

I think the point is that there are some ridiculous spots in every genre of wrestling, (puro's got just as many as the WWE) but sometimes one accepts the conventions of the genre to appreciate the excellence of the athleticism presented by the performers.

The first part of the match was pretty boring (Taker v. Austin levels) but once HBK kipped up and kicked into high gear- it was awesome.

Yes he no-sold the back injury but whatever- it made for an entertaining match that had me (Mr. HBK hater) marking out

When I look through this thread, all I see is poor spelling and low standards :)

To Quote Dave O'Neill, Journalist (UGH), "It's only a message board!"

(Thats his defense when he spells words wrong or uses bad grammar even though he's a "journalist" and likes to brag about it.)

Just a note-people who only watch WWE and bitch about people loving puro are just as bad as people who only watch puro and bitch about people watching WWE.

This is why people think lowly of the IWC. It was a good match, leave it at that. If you try to find flaws in the match, obviously you'll find them. You'll find them in every match.

Ya'll need to quit reading the net and just watch wrestling and form your own opinions for about three months.

Nobody here is bitching about puro. They're bitching about those that constantly bash WWE while comparing it to Puro. They're two ENTIRELY different styles of wrestling, in front of two ENTIRELY different types of crowds, in countries that are thousands of miles away from each other. Puro-fanatics refuse to realize this, and instead continue to focus on why puro is better. We get that this is their opinion, but they repeat it ad-nauseum until several people have to tell them to shut the fuck up. Not just in this topic but many more.

What if my opinion is that the match sucks? Why are we not allowed to be negative? Please explain why several people happening to have the same opinion is bad.
