How exactly does this bad boy work? Can I rent movies from Blockbuster and copy them? I want to get it for my dad for Christmas, but I'm not exactly sure how it works.

I don't have it and never used it, but from what I read, it basically allows you to copy just the movie and an audio track off the dvd and puts a little "this dvd can only be used as a backup" type message at the beginning of the screen.

 

I think I read a review of it on CNet that told me that.

The main drawback is it doesn't compress, so most DVD's when copied will be split onto 2 discs. Plus, you get that backup screen. Not sure if this is just with my DVD player, but sometimes they wouldn't play on it.

I'm "just here" to recommend that you pirate the damn thing, since you'll be using it for piracy anyway. That's why I think it's ironically funny that people actually BUY this piece of software. Keep seeing "flamebait" where there is none, though.

I bought DVD X Copy Platinum and am ready to report. That's right...I bought my pirating...err...backing up my own disk....software.

 

This thing is INCREDIBLE.

 

It's simple to use (and I am not computer smart) and it does a great job compressing which allows you to copy the whole disc (menus, film, special features, subtitles, commentaries...everything) with no (so far) real quality drop.

 

In answer to the first question...yes you can rent DVDs and copy them this way...but that would be wrong. ahem. It takes some time to do it all...it depends on the disk. I just burned the movie Willard (the DVD has a commentary an 80 minute documentary and various other special features...so it's a loaded disk) and it looks and works beautifully.

 

I can see why there's talk of wanting to remove this product...as it does its job incredibly well.

So it copies DVDs and puts them on your computer, I get that.

 

I don't have a DVD burner, but can you put them onto CDs?
