AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2003 Okay, I haven't heard this even mentioned elsewhere, but just the other day I picked it up--having never played the first one--but hearing great reviews. Wow... I'm running into difficulty right now, but when I complete one of the missions, I'm loving it. When I'm dying and have to start over again, I'm still loving it. Traditional 3D-style platforming/shooting makes up most of it, but there's much more, like when your space shit is attacked and you have to defend yourself while avoiding certain death from the asteroids that are everywhere. The weapons...oh, the weapons--sweetness. Use them more, they level up! So far, my favorite of the regular weapons is the gun that shoots...well, they're kinda like Ninja Stars/Boomarangs/Homing projectiles. Launch a couple in the enemies' direction, and watch them plow through the sap, hit some boxes/obstacles, bounce back, hit the enemy in the back of the head, and nail a nearby enemy in the chest. Awesome... Of course, besides the weapons there are of course devices that need to be used to advance further. I was stuck a few minutes on one part, then I figured out that the Tractor Beam could be used to "slingshot" stuff using the rotating machines. Oh, did I mention the kinda-goofy but still funny real-time cinemas? Cinemas that add to the game and don't piss me off? Okay, forgot about that. There's still details I missed--but I strongly suggest y'all go out and rent or buy.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2003 I am stuck between either purchasing this or Jax & Dexter 2......... They really do look like similar games to me from what I have scene. Both had recieved good reviews......which one should I get?
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2003 It's actually titled "Jak II." Having played Jak and Daxter to completion (every Power Cell and Precursor Orb), I thought the first was an excellent game and I'll probably give Jak II to a try. Hard to imagine it being better than this. Still, they seem very similar stylistically, and even share some gameplay elements. I'd say rent both, and get the one you don't like as much second. Cavi 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2003 This is the next game I'm picking up. I was a big fan of the first, and I have faith Insomniac will deliver again. I was also extremely fond of the first Jak, so I was hyped for II. After playing through it, I can say I was pretty disappointed with it. The whole "living city" stuff is rubbish in my opinion. It takes too long to venture about from place to place and the controls for the hovercars are pretty sloppy, which is rather odd for a Naughty Dog game. I found things other than just that to be poorly done. Trial-and-error crap plagues the mission design, which hurt the flow of the game for me quite a bit. Personally, I'm glad to hear the new Ratchet is more of the same. Instead of trying to be "innovative" and "edgy", I thought Naughty Dog should have just done the same old with Jak II since that's what they are best at. Guest MikeSC Report post Posted December 7, 2003 I am stuck between either purchasing this or Jax & Dexter 2......... They really do look like similar games to me from what I have scene. Both had recieved good reviews......which one should I get? Well, I'll give you a little advice. Ratchet & Clank 2 is the best platforming game I've ever played. Hands down. Better than Mario 64. Better than Mario Sunshine. The battle arena is a very fun diversion, the races are fun, even the airship battles are fun. There is nothing I can think of doing to improve it. Powering up your weapons is actually a lot of fun and you get GOOD bonuses for collecting the platinum bolts. The cutscenes are funny (again). It's so good you'll want to play it AGAIN after beating it. Jak 2, on the other hand, was just blah. The "GTA inspired" portions of the game were boring. The vehicles handle like, well, boats and they are used SOLELY to get from point A to point B. No side missions really involving it --- outside of highly frustrating "Race the clock" missions. Add into that the sheer amount of time it takes to actually GET to a level to play. Honestly, I'd get Metal Arms and Prince of Persia before Jak 2. The game might be "revolutionary", but I can't say it's "fun". -=Mike
Downhome 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2004 I hope you don't mind if I bump up an old thread, I just don't want to start an entire new topic just to say this, so whatever. I bought this game about a month or so ago, and I never really got into playing it. I've been feeling sick the past three days or so and I sat down wanting something to do, and I decided to finally play this game. In the past 3-4 days, I have played through this game all the way to the end, beat it, started "challenge mode", and played through the entire game once again buying every single one of the weapons, etc... I loved the game while it lasted, but good lord was this game a piece of cake, it's quite possibly one of the easiest games that I've ever played. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it was just too easy. I loved the basic gameplay where you just run, jump, and shoot, but I HATED just about every other gameplay aspect. You know what I mean, have it be the "Giant Clank" missions, the flying missions, the rails, etc... They aren't hard or anything, I just didn't have a lick of fun doing them. Had they put just as much time on those gameplay aspects as they did with the basic run, jump, shoot gameplay, it would have been so much better. The bosses and the battle arena, while fun and all, were just WAY too easy. The first time I beat the game, I beat the last boss after just a couple of attempts and finally did him in really quickly, just a minute or two. When I went through it the second time I beat the final boss, and I'm dead serious, in about 10-20 seconds. I mean, come on now, that's f'n insane. Some of the weapons in the game, well, some are just TOO powerfull. When you get the mega versions of that shield and of those four little robots that hover above you, you are basicly invincible. Add to that the Zodiac, the Rhyno II, and the special full body armor (I forget what it's called, but it looks awesome, like a mecha-Ratchet or something) and you could do whatever you want to in the game just about with your eyes closed. Even with that, I could play through the game over and over again, it's just that much fun for the most part. I can't wait untill the next installment in this game, but I just hope they fix a few of these points. Focus a bit more on the other gameplay aspects (they have all but mastered the run, jump, shoot gameplay), tone down the weapons just a bit, flesh about the next story just a bit more, and it'll be fan'freaking'tastic. I give it a 9/10, only because it was so insanely easy, and that I hated the seemingly just tacked on extra gameplay elements.
