Mick Foley Interview

Recommended Posts

Guest Trivia247

Thanks to Jason Thompson for the following report:

Mick Foley came onto the Blazer, 91.1 WVUB in Vincennes, Indiana today. Here's a recap:

- Foley started off the interview talking about how big a Christmas buff he is, and how people are disappointed when his house isn't totally decorated. He was excited that he'd be throwing the switch on the Christmas tree lighting, taking place later in the evening.

- Foley said one of the highlights of his life was looking at the New York Times Children's Best Seller's List, and seeing that Katie Curric's book was number 6, and his, Christmas Chaos, was number 4, and said that was the only time he'd ever been on top of Katie Curric.

- He talked about his first book, and how he wrote the entire thing himself. He compared ghostwriting to taking a friend's test for him and putting his name on it. Mentioned that Maurice Clarrett was booted from Ohio State for doing something like that.

- Talked about a new book, Scooter, about a 1960s family in the Bronx not moving out with all the other white families. Due out next spring-summer.

- Talked about his television show in the works with CBS. He was impressed that the DJ, Insane Dane, even knew about it (I sent him that). He said that it's just in the first step, where CBS has ordered a script for the show. Said that the idea was McMahon's.

- Talked about the fake/real argument in wrestling. He said that the expression on his face when Stacy jumped into his arms, his ear-to-ear grin, was real.

- Insane Dane finished the interview by asking Foley, "Are you going to be in WrestleMania XX and competing?" Foley stated that his agreement with McMahon was that he wasn't opposed to doing a match, as long as it has a good story behind it.

This was the conclusion of the radio interview. Foley then appeared in front of about 600, about half the population of Vincennes, and gave a two hour long speech that was basically a lot of stories. Here are a few highlights:

- Started off the speech with a joke. The joke went that he saw a boy waiting on him when he arrived in Vinncenes. The boy was dejected when he saw Foley. The boy said that he had hoped it was Al Snow, because he wanted to live with Al Snow. Foley asked if he lived with his mom, and the boy said, "No, she beats me." Foley then asked if he lived with his dad, to which the boy replied, "No, he beats me." Well, Foley then asks why the boy wanted to live with Al Snow, and the boy replied, "Because he doesn't beat anybody." The entire show was peppered with stabs at Al Snow, with Mick at one point calling the sentence, "Al Snow and Mick Foley are friends", "The biggest exaggeration in all of professional wrestling." Ouch.

- He gave a few on-the-road stories. These included an instance when Jake Roberts relieved himself on Foley's leg.

- Told a story about the night after he won the WWF title for the first time, he had gone all out, and rented out a king sized bed for himself to sleep in for the first time. He then said that he went to a soda machine and saw the Blue Meanie sitting in the lobby. Mick asked him what was going on, and Meanie said the hotel was all booked. So Mick, being the great guy he is, shared his king sized bed the night of his winning his first WWF title with the Meanie.

- He read off a passage, completely off the top of his head, from another new book coming out, a children's book, about WWE superstars growing up together on the same block. The passage he recited was from "Kurt Angle's Coaster Problem," in which Angle soils his "Olympic singlet" in the process. Very funny.

- Near the end of the show, Foley took some questions from the crowd. Only thing of note is Foley calling Terry Funk his toughest opponent.

- He closed with a story about Bob Holly exposing Al Snow's privates in a match in Montreal via moving Snow's tights to the side during a standing suplex. Foley said, "It looked like a robin's egg in an unruly vulture's nest. He could barely get through the story, he was laughing so much.

- After the show he stayed to sign autographs and take pictures with everyone who stayed, which was almost all 600.

All in all, a great appearance by Foley. A lot of people were struck by him, including me. He also talked about all the charity work that he does, and that really hit me as being quite awesome. He's a great storyteller, and had the crowd in his hand the whole way. He's very charismatic. If you ever get a chance to see him live in a setting like this, I'd recommend seeing it, even if you have to drive a very long way. It's definitely worth it.

Foley/HHH becomes a little more real.

I'm a HUGE Foley mark, so I know I'll like the match, but the risk involved and the 'non-elevation' of it should bother me. Right?

The "non elevation" should only bother you if you wanna be a cookie cutter smark. If you, however, enjoy good matches with entertaining characters, then it should be right up your alley.
