Jack_Bauer 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2003 Well, there IS a reason this is getting a section on it's own ya know. Last night, everything seemed to be fucking perfect. Even in the train and on the way there the atmosphere was electric. Mind you the train seemed to have the entire crowd in it so I'm not surprised. The support were Funeral For a Friend. They were pretty amazing and probably the best support band I've seen ( they didn't have a lot of competition in that area though ). Chivo thought they were good but still thinks they suck. That was pretty much the opposite of the rest of us though. They played all of the singles, and the standout was definately 'Juneau' although 'Red Is The New Black' was pretty good as well. They also helped the crowd chant 'Maiden' with their bass drum kicking. I think I'd lost my hoodie at this point ( not that I noticed though ). It was then time for the break between Maiden and FFAF which felt like 30 days and NOT 45 minutes. When they eventually did come on, the entire place just went fucking crazy. 'Wildest Dreams' kicked in and EVERYONE started jumping. From this point in, the crowd were just Maiden's bitches. The crowd singing every word. Then probably one of the main highlights for me came on 'Wrathchild'. I think I actually noticed my hoodie was gone at this point ( not that I gave a shit though ). Anyways, the song was fucking crazy which seemed to be the case with everything. The fans went NUTS for the older stuff. Then Brucey asked the crowd to take two steps back and the crowd actually seemed to listen and take note for the rest of the show ( even though Chivo said that where he was, they were still making you the elbow pin cushion ). 'Can I Play With Madness' was next and then the crazyness starts again. This gig was going beyond the Manics level of greatness and into their own version of plain adorable. 'The Trooper' was next. That was fucking super. We then went into 'Dance of Death'. Ya see, every new song they played ( with the exception of 'Rainmaker' ) was truly phenomenal live and really got the crowd going. Well, 'Rainmaker' DID get the crowd going, but the only thing it got me going to was the toilet. After a well needed piss, I went back and was greeted by 'Brave New World' and I actually got a fucking great place in the crowd when I went back. 'Paschendale' was next, and this song seemed to be focused on a light show and stage show as well as the song. This is usually a song which I would dismiss, but it was superb live and another one of the highlights of the show. Next up was the unknown song of the night called 'Lord of the Flies' which was taken from the Blaze era. It was a good fast song. At this point I worked into an AMAZING place in the crowd. The jumping went higher and everything ! Anyways, the mosh pit was RIGHT beside me and all I kept thinking was 'if someone puts me in there, they fucking die'. Next up was the epic 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'. Wasn't the awesomely amazing song that I was expecting but it was fucking great anyways. Then they added something special to the setlist that they hadn't been playing on the tour. 'Fear of the Dark'. It was the best song of the night for SURE ! Probably because I wasn't even expecting them to play it. 'No More Lies' was another great song on what was quickly becoming the best gig I had ever been to. They then pulled out the 'Scream For Me Glasgow, SCREAM FOR ME GLASGOW ! FOR THE IRON MAIDEN !' The entire place just went fucking through the roof at this point. And then we got ... EDDIE . It was more like 'Grim Eddie' though with the cape from Dance of Death on show with him. It was fucking HUGE, and looked really cool. They then went off and they actually didn't wait TOO long before they came back on for the encore. When they came back, the played the highlight of the entire night for me. 'Journeyman' was truly amazing and I love that song about a million times more now than I did going into the gig. And then 'Woe to you oh earth and see, for the Devil sends the beast with wrath because he knows that time is short ....' and so on and so on. 'Number of the Beast' felt more like a build up for the grand finale though. The finale was of course 'Run to the Hills' which probably officially gained me a sore throat for the next two years. Anyway, the difference with this and the rest of the gigs I've been to, is that the bad songs at the others seemed to kind of drag the event down. Last night was different though, because the good songs were just TOO good for the bad to do anything. Make no mistake, Iron Maiden will probably be the best band I see for a VERY long time, and that's saying something. Manic Street Preachers have FINALLY been beaten and now Iron Maiden are the kings of the live world. At least for now.
Guest BAR Report post Posted December 9, 2003 I went to see them last Thursday in Nottingham. They are really amazing. Your account is pretty much identical to what I saw. The majority of the crowd waited outside til FfaF finished and then we had to wait about another hour for Maiden. I'll be seeing Metallica on Decmeber 19, I doubt they'll come close to Maiden. DARRYLXWF 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2003 Nice Review. Good to see that you're a mark for journeyman like I am. Without doubt it's my favourite song off the new album. Great lyrics, great melody, great everything.

Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2003 I'm surprised they didn't play "Wrathchild" in Mass...considering that's their most well-known pre-Bruce song...
Guest Peter_Griffin Report post Posted December 12, 2003 I'm surprised they didn't play "Wrathchild" in Mass...considering that's their most well-known pre-Bruce song... It surprises me because I haven't seen a setlist where Wrathchild wasn't on it.
justsoyouknow 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2003 Did Paschendale have the orchestra behind it and everything? That and "Face in the Sand" are my two favorite songs off of the new Maiden CD.
