SoCal Promotion Gets National TV Deal

Lucha Va Voom, which has over the last year become the top drawing indy promotion in SoCal, and among the top in the United States, has now become even bigger, accomplishing something that TNA has yet to do, and that ECW and WCW were unable to do to save themselves.

 

Lucha Va Voom now has a national television deal.

 

In what should easily make it the United States' and Canada's number two promotion, at least in terms of exposure, Lucha Va Voom has inked a deal to begin production on a show for Comedy Central. Right now everything is still in pre-production, and there is no word on the shoot date, let alone an airdate.

 

The current plans for the show are that it will be a mini-series of five episodes, then obviously if it's popular enough it would more than likely be picked up for more.

 

In other Lucha Va Voom news, they will be running their next show on February 12th at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles, with Solar, Super Astro, and Ultraman all booked for the show, then they will be running two shows in Toronto, Canada in March. Steve's filled me in a bit about the product -it's a very comedy-based fed, and while it's far from a threat to WWE, it could definitely create a neat little niche fanbase and will be a really fun wrestling alternative to tune into.

After seeing that video... I don't think it will last. To quote a famous wise man (Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid part one)

Meaning Lucha Va Voom can't decide what it wants to be, Wrestling or wacky comedy stage show. So who will it appeal too?

 

it won't appeal to pure wrestling fans or all fans of comedy in general... so honestly who will keep watching it?

 

Using that logic, I don't think it'll last very long on Comedy Central (a channel I haven't watch since they canceled MST3K) sorta like the old WOW fed or The XFL, They didn't appeal to either side of their potential fanbase thus no one cared and they died... I can see the same thing happening to this fed.

The last show they ran drew almost 2000 people. Must be doing something right. I havent seen them myself but I saw a article about it in Rolling Stone. Every review Ive read have been glowing too. I dont think a judgement should be made off a music video.

God, you people are funny. You all bash both the promotion, and the station for picking it up, before even seeing the product. I have been to three out of the four Lucha Va Voom events so far, and they are tons of fun. The Mayan Theatre is the best wrestling venue I have ever been in, or even seen. Far more beautiful then even the Elk's Lodge, plus a happy atmosphere, minus the smarky environment. Sure, the promotion is based around comedy and having a good time, but there's some great Lucha to go along with it.

 

Hell, most of SoCal wrestling doesn't take itself seriously, and is more about having a good time. Have you seen TARO? How about Excalibur? Disco Machine? TopGun Talwar? Ever read one of those PWG ads hyping an upcoming show? How about listening to the commentary from Team Chismo? A major part of the appeal of SoCal's wrestling scene is that it doesn't take itself so seriously, like say... ROH. And the primary reason for that feel to the scene, is that it is heavilly inspired by Lucha Libre.

 

Not every match has to be a "four snowflake plus, pure, technical wrestling clinic that was stiff, but not too stiff and had innovative spots, but not a spotfest, with no reason for the match to take place because I hate that sports ENTERTAINMENT crap damnit, classic" or whatever's become the latest trend for elitist smarks this week. I don't know about you, but as long as the match holds my attention and is something I enjoy, I'm going to be a happy man. And yes, that includes some great (often times comedy inspired), Lucha Libre action with some of SoCal's finest latinas (granted, alot of the woman shown on their website are downright ugly), who don't need plastic surgery and bulemia to be beautiful standing next to me while I watch it.

 

I don't know how well the atmosphere is going to translate onto television, but if they can capture even half the feeling the live show, I'm sure it will pick up a steady following. And whether you people like it or not, Lucha VaVoom has the potential to do something Vince has been trying to figure out how to do for a long time, and that's bring in just as many, if not more, non-wrestling fans that it does wrestling fans. Hell, for every SCU poster or Hispanic Lucha fan that shows up, there's quite a few people who heard about how fun the shows are (from Rolling Stone, word of mouth from the "trendy Hollywood" types, etc.) and came to have a good time.

 

Edit: I'd also just like to point out that every Lucha VaVoom show so far has outdrawn any ROH show in their history. They're outdrawing every indy promotion, including TNA. Hell, their attendance figures are comparable to the WWE's house show attendance. They must be doing something right...

I'm not particularly bashing the promotion itself. I'm just questioning if a TV show would work... you know ratings wise and who exactly would watch it. I'll probably watch it.. but will anyone else?

 

Drawing a few thousand fans to a live event doesn't automatically mean the show will get a large enough TV audience. Wrestling fans may not think it's "wrestling" enough for them and it may be too "wrestling" for comedy fans' taste. I guess we will see in time...
