Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game

Still, Capcom in Slam Masters left the Hogan lookalike IN THE INTRO to the home versions despite him not being in the game.

 

Ortega (sp?) was added to the roster in SNSM 2.

To answer one of my questions, since I got the Genesis Slam Masters now, there's only singles (i.e. the one player mode), vs. (one on one 2 player) and Deathmatch mode. Deathmatch is awesome, but is only vs. Human.

 

I guess it was that it's such a brutal match style it should be saved for sorting out real players' grudges. That or they were too lazy to program the A.I. to take advantage of the differences in the match.

 

So, no four-player mode. Hence, no coop or competitive tag matches, no four-player battle royales. A big sacrifice, and extremely odd when you figure that the Genesis version came out far later than the SNES version--it should have had all the modes of play as the SNES version AND the Deathmatch, to make up for the delay and the downgrade in sound.

 

However, I have a friend who has the SNES version.. :D

Believe me, I do regularly. However, the closest we're gonna get is a new Ultimate Muscle game (one is in the works for PS2, but dunno about an American release).

 

Too bad...a Deathmatch Tornado Tag Tournament in glorious cel-shaded 3D with a bigger roster would be absolutely bitchin'

It's already out for Gamecube. It's a decent game. Good storyline but a bit repetitive.

I said new. I know about the Gamecube one (I have it) but there's a new game in the works for PS2.

Kinda neat that the dirty Commie Biff is on the left and his American counterpart Gunloc is on the right facing each other like that. Yay for Cold War tensions portrayed in old video games!

Deathmatch: The Scorpion and Titanic Tim. Absolutelty fuckin' brutal. I was beaten up and down. Thrown into barb-wire, slammed on C4 had bottles broken over me, hit with chairs, you name it. I barely pinned him after about an 30 minute squash. God, I wish I had that game still. I want that back on PS2, and more match modes. Cage, ladder, etc. One of the best games on SNES I've ever played.

You must have done a lot of the fighting outside of the ring, because matches in Slam Masters are extremely short. Once your energy is down to zero in the ring, any submission hold or a simple pin ends the match (unless you're in a team match and your partner saves you).

 

One of the best games on SNES I've ever played.

 

The Deathmatch mode isn't in the SNES version or the arcade, it's a Genesis exclusive. The SNES is the better version overall, though, thanks to the multiplayer.

 

An update would be great to see, however Slam Masters II's suckitude apparently killed the series dead. With Def Jam Vendetta, Ultimate Muscle, and even the Simpons Wrestling game showing up to cash in on wrestling (the games remain popular despite the declining popularity of WWE. Go figure), there's a small chance of a revival I guess.

I now own the Sega and Nintendo Slammasters games. After playing them back to back--man, Sega owners got screwed.

 

Basically, here are the differences:

 

+ Positives +

 

There are more/uncensored text quotes on the Sega version.

 

Scorp and Jumbo Jack are playable in ALL modes on the Sega version.

 

- Negatives -

 

No multiplayer, so the only modes of play are singles vs. the computer, vs. a human, and the Deathmatch, which you can only play vs. a human (because the programmers were too lazy to make the A.I. learn how to fight in that style of match, I reckon).

 

Less colors

 

Poorer music

 

Instead of 8 stars of difficulty, only Easy, Normal, and Hard are selectable, and Easy ain't that easy because the computer is lightning-quick with grapples on the Sega.

 

Considering that WM: The Arcade Game on Genesis was able to get four different character sprites on screen at once, I'm rather peeved multiplayer was axed. Making it only one-on-one kinda tears the heart out of the game.

 

Damage ratios also kinda seem wonky--SNES matches seem to be far longer and more satisfying.

 

I love the game, either version, but what the hell did they do with the extra year the Genesis version took to make? If they kept the multiplayer, and allowed you to fight in Deathmatches vs. the computer--perhaps a Deathmatch Team Tournament--it would have been the ultimate version and worth the wait. Sadly, it didn't happen.
