Guest Boo_Bradley Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 Toddler killed biting an electric fence December 14, 2003 - 1:33PM A South African toddler has been electrocuted trying to bite through an electric fence at a factory where his mother worked, east of Johannesburg. Police said the four-year-old walked to the factory in Germiston, about 20km east of Johannesburg, from a nearby farm yesterday. "He did not use the main entrance to the factory but tried to gain entry through the electric fence," Sergeant Zithini Dlamini said. "He crawled and used his teeth to cut the fence and was electrocuted," he told the SAPA news agency. Factory workers who heard a scream found the boy dead, Dlamini said. The toddler's mother, aged 26, who was not at work at the time, was notified. It was not clear why the boy went to the factory, Dlamini added. Electric fences are commonly used in South Africa to ward off intruders, notably in the the country's former white suburbs, and are designed to deliver a non-lethal shock.

The Metal Maniac Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 Ok, while I'm all for a good tale of the Darwin awards and the like, I don't think this qualifies, on account of the person involved wasn't STUPID; They were FOUR. That just ain't funny.
justsoyouknow Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 It's possible to be stupid AND four.
The Metal Maniac Posted December 16, 2003 Report Posted December 16, 2003 Possible, though it's a hell of a lot more likely that they're just ignorant, because they're 4.
spiny norman Posted December 18, 2003 Report Posted December 18, 2003 Yeah, I don't find this amusing at all. The Darwin Awards can amuse me, but this is not funny at all and I think it's pretty sick to find humour in it.
Mole Posted December 18, 2003 Report Posted December 18, 2003 Yeah me neither. If you found humor in this, then there is something wrong with you.
Anakin Flair Posted December 18, 2003 Report Posted December 18, 2003 what I want to know is did the kid not feel the shcok when he touched the fence? He had to grab it to start biting it.
2GOLD Posted December 18, 2003 Report Posted December 18, 2003 Ok, if he was 12.....yes But he was 4....and he was biting a fence....but he was FOUR....and trying to eat metal....FOUR God, this is an internal conflict

The Metal Maniac Posted December 19, 2003 Report Posted December 19, 2003 What? It's funny because it shouldn't have killed him? Oh, I get it now. HA. HA. He's still dead, it still ain't funny, and he's still 4.
justsoyouknow Posted December 20, 2003 Report Posted December 20, 2003 He could have easily gone through the main gate, but instead he tried to BITE THROUGH AN ELECTRIC FENCE. I don't care if you're four, if you touch something and it shocks you, you pull away from it, you don't try to gnaw through it. It was designed to deliver a nonlethal shock, and it killed him. Nonlethal....so how fucking hard did he have to try to get through that fence? Again, if you touch something that's hot, your immediate reaction is to jerk your hand away. Ignoring your built-in responses, regardless of age, is funny.
The Metal Maniac Posted December 21, 2003 Report Posted December 21, 2003 I don't care if you're four, if you touch something and it shocks you, you pull away from it, you don't try to gnaw through it. That is, of course, ignoring the possibility that he just came up to it, grabbed it with his hands & mouth at the same time, and the resulting shock caused his muscles to contract, so that he couldn't pull away.
NYU Posted December 21, 2003 Report Posted December 21, 2003 At least he made sure not to whiz on the electric fence.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted December 21, 2003 Report Posted December 21, 2003 At least he made sure not to whiz on the electric fence. I learned not to do that from Ren and Stimpy several years ago..
