Toddler killed biting an electric fence

December 14, 2003 - 1:33PM

A South African toddler has been electrocuted trying to bite through an electric fence at a factory where his mother worked, east of Johannesburg.

Police said the four-year-old walked to the factory in Germiston, about 20km east of Johannesburg, from a nearby farm yesterday.

"He did not use the main entrance to the factory but tried to gain entry through the electric fence," Sergeant Zithini Dlamini said.

"He crawled and used his teeth to cut the fence and was electrocuted," he told the SAPA news agency.

Factory workers who heard a scream found the boy dead, Dlamini said.

The toddler's mother, aged 26, who was not at work at the time, was notified. It was not clear why the boy went to the factory, Dlamini added.

Electric fences are commonly used in South Africa to ward off intruders, notably in the the country's former white suburbs, and are designed to deliver a non-lethal shock.

There's the funny parts.

He could have easily gone through the main gate, but instead he tried to BITE THROUGH AN ELECTRIC FENCE. I don't care if you're four, if you touch something and it shocks you, you pull away from it, you don't try to gnaw through it. It was designed to deliver a nonlethal shock, and it killed him. Nonlethal....so how fucking hard did he have to try to get through that fence? Again, if you touch something that's hot, your immediate reaction is to jerk your hand away. Ignoring your built-in responses, regardless of age, is funny.

That is, of course, ignoring the possibility that he just came up to it, grabbed it with his hands & mouth at the same time, and the resulting shock caused his muscles to contract, so that he couldn't pull away.
