Former "Baywatch" babe Tracy Bingham is glad she's set to host the planned "Chrysler's Lingerie Bowl" pay-per-view special to take place during the Super Bowl -- instead of being one of the players.

Planned as "a group of very sexy, very athletic women playing full-on tackle football in lingerie," as Tracy describes it, the show has become the center of a storm of controversy as of this week.

 

Sponsor Chrysler seemed to go from overdrive to reverse on the "Lingerie" game, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that executives at the auto firm were discussing format changes (including having the women wear sports clothes instead of lingerie) in the wake of criticism of the event. Latest word is that they're be clad in sports bras, panties and lots of padding, and will leave the lingerie to the fashion show that's also part of the event. Still, playing tackle football in bras and panties sounds like it could hurt!

 

"Thank God I'm the host instead of having to be down there on the field," says Tracy. "I don't want to break a nail."

 

'Course not!

 

From the amount of attention already whipped up by this "Lingerie Bowl," it's clear that the regular Super Bowl Half Time show could be upstaged, which is saying a lot considering the level of megastars usually lined up for the event. Could be Super Bowl 2004 will be mighty interesting, even without the football.

Chrysler Withdraws From Lingerie Bowl

DETROIT (AP) - Chrysler has withdrawn its sponsorship from a Super Bowl halftime football game between lingerie-clad models, saying its role has become a distraction.

 

Organizers said the contest will go on.

 

Chrysler Group's Dodge brand had signed on to sponsor the pay-per-view event, scheduled for Feb. 1, but the automaker said Wednesday it has reversed that decision. The company, part of DaimlerChrysler AG, has received criticism from some customers and dealers who consider the game sexist.

 

``Dodge brand's sponsorship of the Lingerie Bowl has become a distraction,'' George E. Murphy, DaimlerChrysler's senior vice president for global marketing, said in a statement.

 

 

Mitch Mortaza, creator and executive producer of Lingerie Bowl 2004, said last week he had assured Chrysler officials the game will be more than a lurid panty party.

 

 

The contest will feature 14 models - seven to a team - playing tackle football dressed in lingerie and some protective equipment. Former professional players Eric Dickerson and Lawrence Taylor will coach the teams.

 

 

The program will air on pay-per-view channels for $19.95.

 

 

Mortaza said Wednesday he was disappointed by Dodge's decision, ``especially since we were led to believe they were behind it 110 percent.''

 

 

``Not only did Dodge evaluate the event for four months before committing, but the details and marketing plan ... have not changed since its inception,'' Mortaza said.

 

 

In a separate announcement, organizers said the game will be played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. They did not mention another presenting sponsor.

 

 

Chrysler officials had said they expected some criticism for associating with the event, but it was a marketing risk the automaker was willing to take because it broke through the Super Bowl's advertising clutter.

 

 

The automaker had said it would use the Lingerie Bowl to pitch Dodge cars and trucks bought primarily by men.

As much as I'd like to see women rolling around in a game of tackle football, if they're gonna be wearing padding it's not worth it. Change it to touch football and let the boobs bounce around in lacy, supportive lingerie...

Crap, I was looking forward to seeing them crush eachother without pads. Guess I'll have to settle for bouncing boobs.
