Did you hear about this recruiting nightmare?

Recommended Posts

I forgot the name of the school and the name of the guy, but get this. The university recruited this guy and supposedly when they went to write up his acceptence letter, they typed in his name and it went to the WRONG GUY, apparently it went to another guy with his exact same name, but this other dude is a band geek and not a basketball player. I guess it is against the law to reject the kid now and the university HAS TO TAKE HIM ON A BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIP. So the school was pissed, tried to get the kid to rip up the contract and when he refused they said fine but you HAVE TO get on the team and go to practice etc.......for the scholarship to be valid. So either this kid is gonna rip it up, or he is going to go to practice and get his ass overworked during practice/offseason workouts. If this kid sticks it out, it will be interesting story to get an update on. Damn I wish I knew the name of the school.

Of course the kid can always just half-ass it -- perhaps he can be a waterboy.

My better half got a rejection letter from the University of Miami, Ohio, that had her name on the envelope but the letter was to ANOTHER person...

if he half-asses it, his scholarship is gone.

Scholarships are only year-to-year... the question is whether the band geek can make it through his one year on the team.

The only problem is that this doubly screws Purdue... not only do they lose a scholarship this year, this counts against the total they can give away next year too. (The rule is like 3 in a single year and 5 in any two years, IIRC)

Was listening to this story on the Jim Rome show last week, at first he read it, made the usual wise cracks about it (i.e. how long the band geek would last) but then some time later he said that either Purdue called or his staff got in touch with Purdue and was told that the story was unequivically untrue. To the point where it was stated that there is no Indiana HS prospect with the name "Jason P. Smith"

Looks like a prank goof that got more attention than it deserved from this website:
