Since this is the biggest controversy on the smartmarks since well ... There has never been this big a controversy I decided for a change of pace and am dedicating the Astroboy Pictures of the Day to the new series.

It looks like deceptive false advertising to me. I posted a topic on it about www.astroboy-online.com so ezpect an answer soon. I'll post back here once there are enough answers over there.

CONFIRMED thanks to www.astroboy-online.com

Looks like they may have took the description from this site

Storyline

]Astroboy (based on the Japanese cartoon character Mighty Atom) was the creation of Dr Osamu Tezuka, an influential figure in the early development of manga (Japanese comics). Atom was the first animated series produced by Tezuka's TV and film production company, Mushi Studios. The initial episode was shown as a TV special on New Year's Eve (one of the most widely viewed evenings on Japanese television) and an instant success. NBC networking executives visiting Japan saw the popularity of the series and purchased the US broadcast rights. Shortly thereafter, the English version, renamed Astroboy, was in syndication throughout America. The story line follows the adventures of a robot created in the likeness of a scientist's dead son. The scientist goes mad and sells the boy robot to a circus. In the climax of the first episode, the robots, though horribly mistreated by the circus owner, rescue circus patrons from certain death when a massive fire destroys the main tent. In reward for their heroism, the robots are granted their freedom. The remaining episodes deal with a wide range of issues, from the longing of robots for human emotions and families, to the destruction of the environment. Pretty hefty stuff compared to the funny animal hi-jinx of Saturday morning! In retrospect, the series is pretty remarkable. Though the translation was greatly softened and sometimes edited for juvenile audiences, the often dark and profound subject matter still is quite apparent. Some episodes, particularly toward the end of the English dubbed series, also exhibit increasingly dreamlike and surreal imagery. Simultaneously there was an increasing amount of violence in these programs and American parents were concerned on the effect of such shows on impressionable young minds. Sadly the American series was canceled after 104 episodes, but the Japanese productions continued for another 89 episodes. In the final episode produced in Japan, Atom sacrifices himself to save the world by manually guiding a missile toward a runaway asteroid

Here's an informative reply from www.astroboy-online.com

http://www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/astr...vigation-2.html

The audo is English, Portuguese and Spanish. There are no subtitles. DVDAsian has is seriously wrong.

A few obvious mistakes...

It doesn't star Billie Lou Watt. She did Astro's voice in the 60s series. Candi Milo does this version.

It's not directed by Osamu Tezuka, it's directed by Kazuya Konaka, Yunio Suzuki, Takuo Suzuki, Yukihiro Shino, Hiroshi Ishiodori, and various others depending on the episode. Tezuka was only the creator. He'd have a hard time directing it since he's been dead since 1989.

They say it's rated G. It hasn't been rated yet.

This version certainly wasn't on air from 1963-1966.

They're showing two different box designs which are different products. The black one at the top is the 5-disc English set. The colourful one further down with Tenma/Shadow on the top is the second box set of the 6-disc Korean version.

At least they got the running time correct.

The price is the giveaway as to what this product is.

US~$450 - Japanese version, 13 separate discs (region 2, NTSC, dubbed and subbed in Japanese, tons and tons of extras)

US~$200 - Korean version, 6 discs in two colourful boxes (region 3, NTSC, dubbed in Japanese and Korean, subbed in Japanese/Korean/English, a few good extras including figurines)

US~$100 - Australian version, 6 separate discs of half the series only (region 4, widescreen PAL, dubbed in English, subbed in English and Hindi , minimal special features)

US~$45 - US version, 5 discs in 1 black box (region 1, fullscreen NTSC, dubbed in English/Portuguese/Spanish, no subtitles, no special features)

(these are all of the 50-episode 2003/2004 series, by the way)

Astroboy-online never fails to impress!

Monday Night Jericho:

I watched some Astro and took note of when Atlas took Astroboy down into the sea. It was right after the iceberg scenario. Atlas was upset at Astro for ruining his and Skunk's plans. Atlas however does allow Astro to live as he remembers some words of motherly guidance that Livian spoke to him previously. There is some good in Atlas.

First US Astroboy Comic!

Picture on This Website:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/...date=2005-02-25

Issue: No. 1 (10151-508)

Date: August, 1965

Publisher: K. K. Publications, Inc. (Gold Key)

Cover Artist(s): Fred Fredericks

If you dig manga and anime you're really gonna love this Oddball edition of ASTRO BOY from the swingin' 1960s - the very first funnybook ever published in America to star a Japanese cartoon and comic book character! But if you think it's drawn by Osamu Tezuka, the Japanese "god of cartoons" and the creator of "Tetsuwan Atom", AKA Astro Boy - well, you've got a biiig surprise coming!

Astro Boy is the most famous creation of Osamu Tezuka (11/3/1928 - 2/9/1989), a brilliant doctor-turned-pioneer-cartoonist who is widely regarded as "the god of cartoons" and "the father of manga" in his native Japan, where his stories and designs remain the primary influence of the entire manga medium. Originally serialized in SHONEN magazine -- a monthly boys' comic book anthology -- starting in 1952, "Tetsuwan Atom" (or "Mighty Atom") was a science-fictional retelling of Carlos Collodi's PINOCCHIO, starring a brave little boy robot with human emotions. Tezuka continued to create the adventures of this appealing superhero for another twenty-one years. These stories demonstrate Tezuka's remarkable ability to craft high-quality comics with incredibly appealing designs, storytelling, draughtsmanship. In 1963, Mighty Atom was adapted into a black-and-white series of 104 animated cartoons by Tezuka's Mushi Productions; these were broadcast on Japan's Fuji television over the next three years, and was the first animated cartoon series ever produced in Japan. In America, the cartoon series -- dubbed, edited and re-titled ASTRO BOY by producer Fred Ladd -- aired on NBC in 1963 and 1964, in partnership with Screen Gems and Video Promotions. (Six episodes of the original show were omitted due to a variety of cultural differences that wouldn't "play" on American children's television.) This Gold Key comic - only a single issue was published - adapts Tezuka's original version of the ASTRO BOY cartoon show, making it the first to star a Japanese character ever published in the USA. Other appearances by Astro Boy in print in the United States, the character starred in a single issue of Gold Key's MARCH OF COMICS (No. 285, his second appearance in American comics), twenty issues of NOW Comics' THE ORIGINAL ASTRO BOY (9/87 - 6/89, oddly, not the originals, but instead written and drawn by Western comic creators, including the multi-talented Ken Steacy) and Dark Horse's current series of reprint books collecting Osamu Tezuka's original - and wonderful -- ASTRO BOY comic book stories. In 1982, a new ASTRO BOY animated series was produced in color and in 2003, a third ASTRO BOY series was animated, this time by Sony, airing all-too-briefly on KidsWB and Cartoon Network. Sony is currently developing a CGI ASTRO BOY feature film.

Astro Boy's origin story is emotionally resonant, especially to anyone who's ever loved the story of Pinocchio, the wooden marionette who longed to become a "real" boy. In the retro-futuristic 21st Century, Dr. Boyton, the head of the Ministry Of Science, strives for a breakthrough in robotics. When his young son Toby runs away from home due to his obsessed father's neglect, he's killed in a tragic automobile accident. Driven mad by grief, Dr. Boyton redoubles his efforts, eventually creating a robot version of Toby. (His "birthday" was specified as occurring on April 7, 2003, a date that was celebrated in Japan.) Soon realizing that his creation will never grow up, insane Dr. Boyton sells his creation to a circus, where he's given the name of "Astro Boy". There, the cute little robot (with design elements influenced by such American characters as Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop and Felix The Cat) displays incredible powers that include searchlight vision, super-hearing, laser-firing fingertips, rocket jet-powered legs and hidden machine guns in his mechanical hips -- but it's his heart and soul that makes him truly unique. Astro Boy is eventually discovered, rescued and adopted by kindly Dr. Elefun. Under his encouragement and tutelage, Astro Boy becomes a brave and plucky champion of humans and the robots that co-inhabit their futuristic society.

Osamu Tezuka once explained his philosophy: "What I try to appeal through my works is simple. The opinion is just a simple message that follows: 'Love all the creatures! Love everything that has life'! I have been trying to express this message in every one of my works. Though it has taken the different forms like 'the presentation of nature', 'the blessing of life', 'the suspicion on too much science oriented civilization', anti-war, and so on."

The truly Oddball aspect of this one-and-only issue of ASTRO BOY is that it fails to take advantage of the stories or artwork of Osamu Tezuka. Instead, it was written (probably by Paul S. Newman) and drawn (by Fred Fredericks, in a style that barely resembles that of either the ASTRO BOY comic books or cartoons) by American funnybook creators!

This issue's 16-page "Astro Boy" cover-story is "Gangor The Monster", was drawn by Fred Fredericks. It begins in Trinidad, Spain, where the atomic-powered luxury liner "Empress Of The Seas" prepares for a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to New York City. Astro Boy and Professor Bunsen -- fresh from attending a convention of the International Society Of Robotologists -- prepare to board ship, but they're interrupted by a nervy cigarette-holder-smoking bald man wearing an eye patch (resembling a one-eyed Hunter S. Thompson) and his group of "47 wrestling robots". Later, out to sea, Astro Boy and Professor Bunsen have a pleasant chat with a middle-aged lady who's wearing some very expensive-looking jewelry, unaware that they're being watched by the bald stranger they encountered earlier. Later that night, the ship's captain is alarmed at the sight of the shadow of what appears to be a horned, multi-legged monster. In response to his cry for help, Astro Boy and Professor Bunsen rush to the upper deck, only to find the bald, one-eyed man and the captain. But when he looks around for Professor Bunsen, Astro discovers his mentor trapped in a blob of some strange orange substance:

SHIP CAPTAIN: Look, Astro Boy!

ASTRO BOY: A blob…a gooey BLOB! What a mess!

PROFESSOR BUNSEN: The mess is ME!

ASTRO BOY:

PROFESSOR BUNSEN: As I was running, somebody pitched this GOOEY MESS all over me! Will you kindly get it off?

While Astro Boy carefully burns away the stuff with his leg-jets, the bald man - whose name, we learn, is "Patch" - conducts a meeting below-decks with a group of sinister-looking men:

PATCH: Are you boys prepared to enter into the TOP deal of your lifetime? Who's looking for a NEW ROBOT?

LOUIE: Not so fast, Patch! You CHEATED me with the LAST robot I got!

PATCH: Louie, you're ALL wrong! I would NEVER cheat you fellows! Cross my heart!

GANGSTER #2: You pulled a fast one, Patch, when you sold us those last robots!

PATCH: You've got me ALL wrong…wait'll you get a load of my brand-new robot…it's a ONE-MAN gang robot!

Later that night, while the gangsters prepare to begin negotiations with Patch, one of them sees a bizarre sight through the porthole - a giant horned creature that resembles a monstrous centipede! It crashes into the cabin of the wealthy lady Astro Boy met earlier, swallowing her money and jewelry whole. Responding to the crash, Astro Boy races to the rescue, but discovers the multi-legged critter has already vanished. Accompanied by the ship's captain and Professor Bunsen, Astro Boy even searches the ocean liner's hold, only to briefly mistake a control panel of gauges and dials for its leering face. Going topside, he questions the throng of odd-looking wrestling robots he encountered earlier, but they completely ignore him. Meanwhile, in Patch's cabin, the gangsters are practically pleading with the bald robot-dealer, offering a million dollars to purchase the services of his new "one-man gang robot". The negotiations become heated, but when the gangsters begin to threaten Patch, the proceeds are interrupted by the arrival of the mysterious wrestling robots.

PATCH: Gangor is the world's GREATEST robot and I'll NOT take chicken feed! I want TEN TIMES as much or you can all get out!

Elsewhere, Professor Bunsen is convinced that the "mad monster" is actually a robot. When Astro Boy wishes that they could consult with Dr. Elefun, the ship's captain suggests that they send him a "wireless message". Meanwhile, Patch's negotiations have hit a snag; instead of raising the bidding, he's annoyed his gangster-customers to the point that they shoot him with their handguns at point-blank range. As he falls to the floor, severely wounded, the so-called "wrestler robots" that surround them remove their disguises and link up together to form Gangor, the centipede-like robot that's been plaguing the ship! It attacks the trio of criminals, spitting the orange goo on them with which it previously disabled Professor Bunsen. Up on deck, Astro Boy receives word that the ship's captain has contacted Dr. Elefun, but before they can speak to one another, Astro Boy's attacked by Gangor. Trapped in a wad of the monster's orange goo, the boy robot falls overboard, where he remains confined like a fly in amber. But when a school of sharks attack the spongy mass, Astro is finally released. As he takes to the sky, Astro Boy sees a helicopter approaching him, one with a rapidly-failing motor:

ASTRO BOY: I'M FREE! WHOOPS! I'm very grateful to you sharks, but I DON'T intend to wind up as your breakfast! Now to find that ship before the monster robot tears it apart! What's THIS?

SFX: Conk! Putt! Putt! Putt! Sputter!

PILOT: Dr. Elefun! Our motor has CONKED OUT!

DR. ELEFUN: NO! You heard the ship's S.O.S., we must save the passengers from destruction! KEEP GOING!

Fortunately, Astro Boy swoops to the rescue and carries the malfunctioning helicopter and its occupants to the "Empress Of The Seas". But the ship is a wreck, thanks to the rampaging Gangor. Patch - having been patched up by the ship's doctor - warns Astro:

PATCH: I invented Gangor…you must find him…STOP HIM!

Astro Boy blasts off, heading out to sea, tracking Gangor's trail of destruction from island to lighthouse to the ocean floor. Using his searchlight-eyes, Astro follows Gangor's footprints to the depths of the Atlantic. There, he finds the multi-legged monster asleep, but when his voice awakens it, Astro Boy finds himself under attack by the goo-spitting "gang-robot". As the two robots start to battle, neither pauses as they're sucked up into a terrible typhoon's waterspout. As they struggle within the sky-high funnel, Astro Boy uses his great strength to whittle down Gangor, one segment at a time. Finally, all that's left is Gangor's horned head, which Astro clobbers with a mighty punch:

ASTRO BOY: No more Gangor!

His foe destroyed, Astro Boy flies back to the "Empress Of The Seas", where its crew and passengers cheer and applaud him:

DR. ELEFUN: Astro Boy SAVED us! He DEFEATED the monster robot!

CROWD: YEA!

Dr. Elefun tells Patch he's lucky to be alive, but the underworld robot-dealer swears he's learned his lesson. But then he makes an unexpected offer:

PATCH: Er…how about it, Doc? Would you MIND selling me Astro Boy?

DR. ELEFUN: Who…wha…ASTRO BOY?

PATCH: Only trying to be FUNNY!

Also included in this issue of ASTRO BOY are these stories and features:

"Wild Animals Of Asia" Number 4, "Yak", a black-and-white, inside-front-cover "Keys Of Knowledge" educational feature, drawn by Joe Certa.

"Astro Boy" in "Attack Of The Mud People". - While flying through the night sky, "on patrol against evil", Astro Boy gives no serious notice to a truck that passes below him. But after he departs, the truck stops in an area designated "Desolate Stretch" (!) and its two identical passengers climb out, chemically test the soil and commence a suspicious experiment. Nearby, the next morning, a farmer finds his family and home under attack by a pair of giant monsters apparently composed of living mud. He phones the local police for help, but they've got their hands full, fending off a mob of mid-city mud-monsters! With their bullets having no effect, the lawmen direct the citizenry to take safety inside the Institute Of Science building, where they desperately beg Dr. Elefun to aid them. He summons Astro Boy, who -- in a flashy display of concentric circles and stars - rockets to confront the mud men, who now number in the dozens. As he zooms from emergency to emergency, Astro Boy finds the creatures to be surprisingly easy to defeat; one punch and they crumble in a heap of dry dirt. But just when it looks like he's got the upper hand, Astro Boy begins to slow down and weaken. When a mud man clobbers him with an uprooted lamppost, Astro Boy is laid low. As Dr. Elefun runs to assist him, he's interrupted by the two mysterious lookalikes we saw earlier. Introducing themselves as the Terror Twins, the fiendish-looking mad scientists explain that they're responsible for the existence of the "invincible" mud people, then demand that the city pay them five million dollars by sundown or risk the total destruction of the city by a force of one hundred mud people! While the city officials ponder this threat, Dr. Elefun attempts to discover what's wrong with Astro Boy. Soon, he determines that Astro's inner mechanisms have been clogged up with sand and dried mud, which probably penetrated his body when by the crumbling mud monsters he demolished earlier. After Dr. Elefun oils his joints and warns him to keep his distance from any mud people he might encounter, Astro Boy heads out to stop the Terror Twins plot. But his search is fruitless; by sundown, he still hasn't detected a sign of any mud people. But when he receives a radio message from Dr. Elefun - telling Astro that his examination of soil samples taken from his robotic charge's body show that they could only originate in one place - Desolate Stretch! Rocketing through the sky, Astro Boy travels to the remote area, only to discover the Terror Twins busily creating new mud people - by pouring special electro-energized mud into a mold - within their truck. Their operation is ruined when Astro boy steps inside and destroys the twins' electro-energizer machine. But the Terror Twins don't give up so easily! They command their legion of mud people (Astro Boy realizes, "There were here all the time! No wonder I couldn't see them from above: they blended in with the ground!) to follow them toward the city. Using a tree trunk like a baseball bat, Astro Boy takes out two of the mud monsters, but a third crud-creature grabs him. Dropping down, Astro Boy quickly yanks the legs out from under the mud person and splatters him against the ground. As the sun sets, Dr. Elefun and the other city-dwellers, having failed to raise five million dollars, prepare for the mud monsters' final onslaught. Astro arrives, but the mud people kick up a cloud of dust that threatens to clog the boy robot's inner mechanisms again. For that matter, the city's humans aren't exactly enjoying breathing the dust. When Astro Boy overhears Dr. Elefun's gripe about needing a drink of water, it gives him a great idea. Borrowing a box of dry ice from Dr. Elefun's laboratory, Astro Boy uses it to "seed" the clouds overhead, triggering an instant downpour. As it rains, the mud people begin to dissolve, washing away down the city's gutters. (Being rustproof, Astro Boy's body isn't affected by the rain at all.) After he apprehends the Terror Twins, he explains how he created the unexpected rainfall. Meanwhile, the Terror Twins whine about how they'll never explain their scheme's failure to their fellow criminals. Astro Boy offers a simple answer, "Just tell the truth! It was called off on account of rain!"

"People Of Europe" Number 10, "The Hollanders", a black-and-white, inside-back-cover "Keys Of Knowledge" educational feature, drawn by Joe Certa.

A back-cover pin-up that reprints this comic's front-cover artwork, minus the cover-copy. (These pin-ups were a standard, cost-cutting feature on most of Gold Key's early - and ad-less -- funnybook publications.)

ODDBALL Factoid - Although better-known for his work on Lee Falk's syndicated newspaper comic strip MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN, Fred Fredericks has drawn a surprising number of humorous comic books including NANCY AND SLUGGO, DEPUTY DAWG, MIGHTY MOUSE, ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE, MISTER ED, HECKLE AND JECKLE, LITTLE LULU, THE MUNSTERS, LINUS THE LIONHEARTED, SMOKEY THE BEAR, THE FLINTSTONES, YOGI BEAR - and ASTRO BOY!

Bonus ODDBALL Factoid -- In 1994, the city of Takarazuka, Japan opened a museum celebrating the life and works of Osamu Tezuka, and in 1997, postage stamps bearing Tezuka's image were issued in his honor!

ASTROBOY PICTURE OF THE DAY!!

uran8.jpg

badass

Like? It's a little tough finding pictures of Commonturk which is a shame because there are a lot of possable great action shots with him.

Any chance you're going to the upcoming Smackdown and Raw shows in Alberta?

We need to get a good long chat going whenever possable. Greg and Joe are really pimping Resident Evil IV by the way!

They screwed EVERYTHING up at the rumble! Vince McMahon is now in a wheelchair because he blew out BOTH legs that night. HHH and Nash have nothing on Vince.

I LOOOOVE the gym! Hyperextensions, weird movements on blue balls which I love, flies and bent over dumbell lat work combined with skimpy clothing rule all!

See you later!

Thanks to Strange WIngs for This. All comments are his:

I just finished doing a guitar tablature of the 80's Astroboy theme. It ought to be played by the fingerpicking method, but it might also work by using a plektrum.

This version is not quite accurate to the original theme as I done it merely in the lighthearted way, nonetheless it should be good for some fun. Enjoy!

Bleeping bleep! I'd love to have a foursome with all of them complete with everyone wearing edible Astroboy panties. Or just push the Astroboy panties to the side while still having them on --- Uh, I'm going to stop there.

ASTROBOY PICTURE OF THE DAY

Description taken from www.astroboy-online.com

The french ending sequence of the 80's version showing Astro wishing good luck and flying away has always stuck in my mind throughout nearly two decades now.

bonnechance.jpg

translated from his french speech): "..and watch out, my friends! Don't forget to pursue the next emissions. Good luck!"

The translation may be incorrect though, but I suppose that's about what he said.

Obviously this video excerpt was taken from the episode 'Astro's First Love'.

WP -- I'm curious about how many people are actually reading this thread and who you are. If you are reading it please just make a quick post saying that you are indeed reading. Thanks very much. All cooperation is sincerely appreciated.

Remember this is now a Samurai Jack combined with an Astroboy thread so feel free to talk about Samurai Jack as well.
