Steinbrenner faints, but is OK

By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com

George Steinbrenner fainted Saturday while attending a memorial service for football legend Otto Graham in Sarasota, Fla., but the New York Yankees owner is reportedly in good condition.

According to the Associated Press, Steinbrenner was alert by the time medics arrived at the scene.

"Right now, he's fine," Paul Dezzi of the Sarasota County Fire Department told the AP. "He fainted. When we arrived, he was alert and oriented. He was very talkative in the ambulance."

Yankees spokesperson Rick Cerrone had no information regarding the incident. Steinbrenner's publicist, Howard Rubenstein, also had no particulars about the owner's condition.

Steinbrenner, 73, was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he was given oxygen and an electrocardiogram. Dezzi said that he was given intravenous fluids in the ambulance, and that based on preliminary tests, "Everything showed up fine."

"There's nothing obvious from our side," Dezzi said. "I just talked to someone who was with him in the hospital, and Mr. Steinbrenner seemed OK."

Sarasota Herald-Tribune columnist Doug Fernandes told the AP that he was about 20 feet away when Steinbrenner fell during a slide show presentation, which had been prepared by Graham's grandchildren and featured pictures of Steinbrenner and Graham together.

"He went to reach for a chair but he missed, and he went face-first into the carpet," Fernandes said. "People were stunned. They started loosening his tie and his collar. He was out for a few seconds. By the time they wheeled him out, his color had returned."

Hospital spokeswoman Lynn Cassan did not comment to the AP, citing patient confidentiality. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune confirmed Steinbrenner was at the hospital.

Mark Feinsand is a reporter for MLB.com. The Associated Press contributed to this report. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

You know, if the Sawx or the Muts had made some kind of move yesterday, I'd bet the farm on this being a stunt.

Who gives 'em more hell than George?

Only when they deserve it.

He pays you God knows how much to play on the most historic team in sports with a damn good chance at winning it all, the least you can do is not humiliate him.

I hate the Yankees, and even I think there's something cool about the guy.

It's the fact that he's eccentric (If he wasn't wealthy, he'd be crazy)

Crazy old rich people are cool.

Yeah, the SportsCentury on Steinbrenner talked about his acts of philantrophy, or things like catching a kid spraying graffiti on Yankee Stadium and "making" the guy pay his debt by working as batboy for the Yankees for a night.
