NEW YORK - Jim Carrey tops the list in a poll of the Top Ten Money-Making Stars of 2003 by Quigley Publishing Co., which conducts an annual survey of motion picture exhibitors.

Nicole Kidman finished second, followed by Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks, Will Ferrell and Renee Zellweger.

The Quigley Poll, conducted every year since 1932, asks motion picture exhibitors to vote for the 10 stars who generated the most box-office revenue for their theaters.

Exhibitors also were asked to name the Stars of Tomorrow for 2003 _ one actor and one actress who they feel will be top moneymakers in the years to come. The 2003 winners are Ashton Kutcher and Scarlett Johansson.

Jim Carrey Brings in Bucks

by Lia Haberman

Jim Carrey is quite the cash cow, according to movie theater owners.

The rubber-faced funnyman came first in a poll of the Top 10 Money-Making Stars of 2003 conducted by Quigley Publishing Co., which surveys motion picture exhibitors annually for their list of leading moneymakers.

Carrey's divine comedy Bruce Almighty was the fourth top-grossing theatrical release of 2003, ringing up heavenly $242.7 million in ticket sales. The actor didn't make out too badly himself, pocketing a $25 million paycheck to cuddle with costar Jennifer Aniston.

This year continues to promise a steady stream of green for exhibitors (and Carrey) as the thesp is scheduled to star in at least two films, including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (March 19) and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (December 17).

Beyond that, Carrey's expected to star in a parody of The Six Million Dollar Man and a remake of the 1977 comedy Fun with Dick and Jane with Mask costar Cameron Diaz. He's also talking with Steven Spielberg about collaborating on a remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman was voted the next most popular celeb in getting moviegoers to part with their money, followed by Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks, Will Ferrell and Renée Zellweger.

The Quigley Poll, conducted every year since 1932, asks motion picture exhibitors to vote for the 10 movie stars who generated the most box-office coin for their theatres.

It's Jim Carrey's first time atop the list, and he knocks last year's champ Hanks off his perch. Still, the Cast Away star managed to remain in the top 10 despite not having a movie premiere in '03.

Exhibitors were also asked to name the Stars of Tomorrow for 2003. The hot young things predicted to become major moneymakers were Ashton Kutcher for--we kid you not--Just Married and My Boss' Daughter and Scarlett Johansson for Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Very few people say or think "Man, I've GOT to go see the new Orlando Bloom movie!" These guys are both in franchises bigger than their names. Put someone else in Jim Carrey's role and a lot fewer people care about Bruce Almighty.

But AS said Carrey's career was dead.

AS is never wrong... is he?

As a drama star his career is dead....which is a damn shame.

The guy has more skill than he gets credit for.

I wouldn't go that far.

He's really good at screaming loudly and making funny faces. And hell, People still seem to love it. But I wouldn't say the guy has more skill than he gets credit for

I guess we'll find out... his next film is a Charlie Kaufman script :headbang: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (or something to that effect). Elijah Wood's in it too.

I thought he was pretty good in The Truman Show

Jim Carrey isn't the top money making star, he is the biggest box-office draw, there is a difference.

The reason Bruce did so well was because they marketed it as a regular ol comedy. It turned out to be a romantic comedy, AND IT FUCKIN SUCKED. The movie followed the same old formula as any romantic comedy and I hate them.

If the movie was marketed as a romantic comedy, then it wouldn't have made the same amount of money. I sure as hell wouldn't have seen it, and that goes the same for my friends. During the movie, I leaned over and said "Mark, this is a fuckin romantic comedy." Mark then said "Yeah, I could have saved this to see with a chick and gotten laid."
