UFC 46: Super Natural

Recommended Posts

Wow. Sure didn't see THAT coming. Let me start off by saying, before the main event the show was EXCELLENT, which is why it kills me that the main event had to go down like that, because every fight was tremendous and with a proper main event this could have been the perfect show.

Question though, why doesn't UFC have a rule where the title can't change hands on a doctor stoppage? It would make more sense, like in wrestling with a DQ. It doesn't seem right that the champion should lose his title when something like that goes down. It should go down as a loss but he should keep the title until a rematch. Anyway, I'm happy for Vitor but he obviously was not happy winning the belt like that. Hopefully Randy is ok. It was heart wrenchingly dsiappointing to have the match stopped but it was the right call, Randy's eye didn't look good.

Another question, they were stressing how they were going to fight a rematch at the next possible conveniance. Is it possible for them to add it to UFC 47: It's On? It would make the show even more stacked, and after that, technically the winner of Chuck/Tito gets Vitor which would be incredibily unfair to Randy if the rematch is delayed for that long.

As for the rest of the show, as I said, it was excellent. I've already become a Lee Murray mark and found it hilarious after all the hype about his brawling skills that he throws not one punch and gets a sumbission with an armbar/triangle. Can't wait to see this guy back, hopefully he'll knock Tito into his place soon.

Mir/Simms was so awesome. It's like a pro wrestling stroyline only real fighting. Oh, and hey Goldberg was there!

Simms giving the thumbs up and then the finger when Mir was trying to submit him was awesome. The guy truly is a monster who can take a beating. But those knockout shots by Mir were brutal! Simms, you just got knocked the fuck out! Both guys looked exausted after, truly a war of attrition.

What can I say about Bj Penn? I have never seen either of these guys before, but of course had read a lot about how Hughes is so dominant and the best fighter in the world, and when BJ choked him out I was literally jumping up on my couch screaming "oh my god!" I don't think anyone saw that coming. And his celebration after, how can you not love that little guy?

And how can anyone not want to see Chuck and Tito go at it right now? Tito is such a little bitch, I can't wait to see him get his head knocked off.

Forgot his name off the top of my head, but that was a great showing from Penn's trainer who totally dominated Newton. Kudos to Newton for hanging in there and making it interesting until the end, but the other guy was simply dominating.

Just an awesome night so far, and this new MMA fan was quickly becoming an MMA mark, and after all the hype, the intensity, we get the main event stopped seconds in due to a dangerous eye poke. And Vitor wins the title, which seems very wrong, as I said there should be a rule disallowing the title to change hands in such circumstances. I didn't doubt Vitor would pull it off anyway, but you know he doesn't want it like that, hopefully Randy is ok and they can get this fight signed again for the next show. A night just short of perfect...

Considering this was my first UFC PPV, I'm not disappointed at all. Frank Mir won, and two titles changed hands. Now someone answer my Ortiz/Liddell question please.

I'm a new fan too (started at UFC 43 in June), but basically Tito was the champ, Chuck was the dominating top contender and because of "contract disputes" Tito would never agree to fight Chuck, which everyone took as Tito ducking him and being afraid. So while Tito was on sabbaticle, Chuck and Randy was signed to crown an interim champ, with the winner to face Tito and unify the belts. In a pretty big upset Randy dominated Chuck to win the interim belt. Tito was then more eager to fight now that Chuck was eliminated from the equation thinking he could beat the old man Couture easily, he got owned and literally spanked as he lost his title official to Randy Couture. Now, finally both coming off losses to Couture, Ortiz and Chuck was signed, with the winner facing the winner of Couture/Belfort, and if we don't get the rematch at the next show, it will be Belfort for the title. Hope I'm correct in summing it up.

Well said Slapnuts. I agree on every point. By the way the dude who dominated Newton was Renato Verissmo.

Personally, I don't think this should have been a title fight anyways. Vitor beat Marvin Eastman - a top 20 light-heavyweight at best; that doesn't call for a title match. This was set up because of a previous match they had and that's it, so it should have been non-title. That's what PRIDE does and it works for them. Then, if you have an upset, you can have the rematch where the champion has to prove his worth. I agree with the sentiment that titles shouldn't change hand son things like "that", however, that leaves it up to the judges' descretion, so where do you draw the line? If a fighter gets bloodied up because the opponent was simply beating the shit out of him, then shouldn't the title change hands?

They've already booked all the matches.

The problem is that UFC, with so many divisions yet only 6 shows a year, has backed themselves in a corner where they more or less HAVE to give title shots to undeserving guys. I mean, while you try and wait for a guy to gather a 3 fight UFC winning streak, you have a champion sitting on his ass, getting rusty and making no money unless he faces someone else who's undserving, thus taking you back to square one.

On Randy/Vitor, I first PRAY that Randy's okay. I mean, it'd suck enough if this were a career threatning injury, but to go out like he did after the heights he had risen to qould be a shame. However, in principle, I think I'd have to agree with ruling the fight a win for Vitor. Flukish? Indeed, but in the end, the damage was caused by a legal punch thrown by Belfort. If you were to rule it a no-contest, you open the flood gates for all kinds of interpretations of fight endings, and pretty soon you could have every fighter who feels he was jipped challenging a loss. Besides, I highly doubt anyone is going to make this out to be some monumental victory for Vitor/loss for Randy.

Through the first 3 matches, this was a very good card, yet was cursed with a lackluster performance by Newton (big props for Verissimo for domianting, regardless) and one fo the worst possible endings for a fight, much less a main event title match.

From today's Observer update, this doesn't sound good...

--In last night's UFC main event, the grazing punch by Vitor Belfort on Randy Couture went completely through his eyelid and exposed the eyeball. Couture underwent surgery last night at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas and as of last report, the injuries were believed to be career threatening. We will have an update on him tonight on the show

I don't really like Mir. Ian Freeman kicking the crap outta him was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Personally, I didn't think Mir looked good in victory last night. I mean for the amount of money he makes and for the amount the UFC are pushing him as "the next big thing", he hasn't really impressed me. For starters, Sims isn't a great fighter or anything close to it. Sure, Mir was dominating him, but Mir was also gassed badly. He was lucky that Sims also had nothing left in the tank or he would have been screwed. Impressive looking knockout, but I think I could have landed shots on Sims last night he was that tired.

So, for me, the jury is still out on Mir.

Good show.I just finished watching it on a replay. The main event was a let down but Couture's health is far more important,i hope the early reports about his career in danger are false.

The hype for Ortiz/Liddell was just perfect.

B.J Penn is amazing going up a weight and beating the best guy in that class.

Courtesy of (and ©) Full Contact Fighter:

From Las Vegas this afternoon, recently unseated light-heavyweight champion Randy Couture called into FCF to let everyone know that he's okay. In a slightly somber tone, Couture says his injury last night at UFC 46 was caused by a seam on the outside of the commission issued gloves that grazed his left eye. (Couture says he didn't feel any impact from the actual punch). The damage required three stitches to his lower eyelid and five to his upper lid. Couture says there was also some retinal abrasion, as well as some irregularity with his pupil dilation that he was given eye drops for. Patched up and back in his Mandalay Bay hotel room, Couture says he has been resting with his wife and family members.

On the positive side, Couture was told all his optical maladies are expected to heal completely and with his stitches out in a few days, "the Natural" hopes to be back to training in less than two weeks. According to Couture, Zuffa has already started discussing the inevitable rematch with newly crowned champion Vitor Belfort and he let the promotion know that he'll be ready to fight again as early as April (although he realistically anticipates a June date at the earliest.)

FCF wishes Couture, as well as the other injured UFC 46 participants, the speediest of recoveries.

I think another factor is that UFC doesn't have the star power to hold non-title fights like Pride does. Title fights (especially in N.A.) are often deemed alot more important. Pride doesn't always need their champion defending his title because of the strength of the rest of the card (in Nog's case where he fought a lot of non-title fights, they would have Silva, Sakuraba, etc. fighting). The lack of big UFC names doesn't enable them to do this. So if they are building a card around this match, then people more or less want it to be a title match.

And yes, last night you could argue that Penn-Hughes was big enough, but essentially the card was sold on Belfort-Couture and I think the general public, in laying down money for a match, would want it to be a title fight.

As well, it gives the UFC the opportunity for the 5 round fight that they love to put on for big fights (which I think was partially the reason for the Liddell-Couture interim situation) I'm still wondering if they will find an excuse to make Ortiz-Liddell a 5 rounder.

As for last's nights card, gotta agree that it was dissapointing. The last fight of the night often leaves a lasting image of an entire card and that fight last night just left me feeling empty. Although seeing Penn make Hughes tap was worth it. (not that I like/dislike either one)

From the Observer site...

--The injuries to Randy Couture were not nearly as bad as indicated yesterday morning. He ended up just taking stitches in his eye, three in the upper eyelid and five in the upper eyelid. He also had a retina abrasion and other minor problems with the eye pupil that are not expected to be long lasting. He'll need to get the stitches out, as well as his eyes dilated, but his career is not in jeopardy, and he may be back training in ten days to two weeks. A Couture vs. Vitor Belfort rematch looks to be just about a sure thing.

Good news :)

Thank you, here's Carlos Newton's response to his fight (via UG)

Hi Guys,

I have been getting many questions on the fight, mostly, what the heck happened? First, I would like to apologize not for losing the fight but for the fight being so boing.

As for what happened? well, 1. Charuto happened. A great grappler with a bright future ahead of him, Congradulations Renalto! 2. I never felt so sluggish and weak in a fight ever before. Perhaps the late coming in didn't help but I think it had more to do with weight category and training ethic.

To elaborate on the above, I have been weight training over the last year to keep size up for Pride and I think cutting the weight is really hurting me. I believe perhaps I have physically outgrown 170lbs. Also in hind sight, if I'm being honest, "you fight the way you train" and my attentions have been divided. It's obvious to me now, as I see it with one black eye, I must make changes to my lifestyle.

My academic carreer will be put on hold until I have made much improvement in my abilities to preform at todays fast improving level of competition. I probably should have made such a decision long ago, but it is sometimes hard to let go of some dreams in order to achive others; and being in love doesn't help when it comes to chosing the fight game over your long term future.

I would like to thank my supporters, who havn't broken their legs yet jumping off my band wagon; I have just one thing to say to you guys, "we'll be back". And I have to thank my consistant training partners (dispite what Rogan says) who are excellent! If any of you guys on the forum want to help me train for a future fight just let me know through my new web sight Carlos Newton.com or at WarriorMAC.com. I am certainly going to need all the help I can get.

Thanks for the time and all of your support in the past,

Carlos Newton
