DerangedHermit 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/7000673 Marino to become Dolphins head of football operations Jan. 12, 2004 By Jay Glazer SportsLine.com Senior Writer The Miami Dolphins front-office search has taken an unexpected turn. Dolphins great Dan Marino told SportsLine.com that he has accepted a job as the team's new head of football operations. Marino told SportsLine.com that he will not be joining the team until after the Super Bowl and his broadcast duties are complete. Marino has talked with team owner Wayne Huizenga about such a position for a while, but met with the owner again Monday to finalize the deal. It is expected that he will work with both Dave Wannstedt and Rick Spielman, who should be retained in the deal. Marino is a sure-fire future Hall of Famer and current analyst for The NFL Today on CBS.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted January 12, 2004 he's not a fan of Fiedler from what I've seen so I wouldn't be surprised if he goes after a new QB first.
Mik 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 Dan Marino was a hot topic in my house for Christmas, as I got a pair of Isotoner gloves. I have nothing else to add.
Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 he's not a fan of Fiedler from what I've seen so I wouldn't be surprised if he goes after a new QB first. He was friends w/ Damon Huard, so he wanted Huard to take over the QB spot after he retired, so that's where that stems from. After seeing the Dolphins w/ Fiedler, I think Marino realizes Jay was the better choice. Hell, I like Fiedler and would still look for a QB, so I don't think his personal feelings about the QB spot are going to matter. Maybe pursue Mark Brunell, and look to trade up in the draft to get the QB from Miami of Ohio. As for him getting the position, it's an interesting choice. I would have preferred someone w/ experience. It'll be interesting to see how he handles the position.
Gert T 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 Marino needs to get some talented no.2 & 3 WR's and a better O Line. Quit spending all your damn money on the defense.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted January 12, 2004 why do owners assume that ex-players can handle front office jobs anyway? It's a good thing they kept Spielman to keep Marino from doing anything overly retarded.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted January 13, 2004 It's not just that he's an ex-player; he's an ex-player who had a TV gig. That's all you need to get a coaching/front office job nowadays.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 It's really been a mixed bag in terms of former athletes making the jump from broadcasting to the front office. Matt Millen's been a complete failure. Kevin McHale's done pretty well. Still need to get out of the first round of the playoffs.
