Phoenix Fury Legdrop 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 IWA Mid-South: TPI, Winter Wars 2003 (I was only there live, and it's the best live show I've been to ever, but I've heard at least one person say it's Show of the Year), Spirit of '76 Wildside: (Haven't seen anything since their 200th episode taping in July, minus a few TV episodes late in 2003) Freedom Fight 2003 (just for the main, though the opener is awesome too)
JustJoe2k5 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 King of the Deathmatches '03 was probably the single greatest independent video I have gotten. Nearly every single match on the tape was watchable as the deathmatches were all entertaining and Chris Hero vs. Homicide, B.J. Whitmer vs. Homicide, and Chris Hero vs. Danny Daniels were really good wrestling matches. I have Night II of TPI '03 and it is very good, Danny Daniels has really improved since becoming Heavyweight Champion, although he has already lost the title. Michrome 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2004 I just finished watching Winter Wars, and I thought it was darn good. Hero-Styles is near ****, and 2 of the 3 Jacobs-Shelley matches were ***+.
thecitythesky 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 ^^^ not to squabble over the details... but i'd certainly think that Hero/Styles comes in at ****1/4. the intensity by Styles is absolutly ridiculous. i mentioned this in another thread, but i feel that this is a testament to the heel that Styles should've been as NWA Champ. he was a vicous, vicous pitbull on Hero's leg. and in true Hero fashion he sold everything masterfully, knowing exactly when to break into his comebacks (but not making them too long and nullify the legwork). no real wasted movement... everything made sense, and it all built and built and built and went somewhere. the only downsides are that i would've liked to have seen it go longer, that michael shane spoiled the after match in order to push the following nights match. although the extra 1/4* in the rating may also be a live vs. tape issue; i think that it warrants it. : as for IWA-MS shows to get from this year : Winter Wars (for the above match, as well as the Jacobs/Shelley matches) TPI 2003 (for Hero/B-Boy (a solid ****1/2 affair) which is the icing on the cake of an all around great weekend) 12-20-03 in Highland, IN (Hero/B-Boy II (not as good as the first one, but plays on the big spots from that match and sets up for the 2/3 falls match (which will happen at some point down the road... when?... with Hero going to Germany WxW full time i don't know) and Arik Cannon/Steve Stone (a fun ***1/4 matchup with Stone's great babyface fire) and Whitmer/Steel (***1/4-ish) When Hero met Punk (2/3 falls, 93 minutes... everything that needs to be said already has. and the match is longer than the Mighty Ducks) Spirit of '76 (Shelly/Jacobs 30 minute Ironman match, Hero/Steel) KOTDM 03 (Hero/Homicide) must own: TPI 2002 (Daniels/Styles (****) and Daniels/Punk (****1/2, the story runs so deep and directs the entire match) along with so many other solid solid matches. probably the best weekend of wrestling of the year) 02/09/02 (Hero/Punk Tables and Ladders match, 55 minutes. ****1/4. almost perfectly put together, everything is built up... and everything means something)

thecitythesky 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 i have a few problems w/ that match listing... granted i ordered it anyway. and i do understand since they were made in such limited quantities that it was made more for the current fans as more of a "year in review" than a true "best of..." designed to bring in new fans to what is an all around stellar promotion (easily 2nd best in the states in my opinion (and if Ian had the bank rolling in from other people's success like RF does, he'd be #1 w/o a doubt)) i would've liked to have seen Hero/B-Boy from the TPI on the DVD, although i understand that Lynn/Styles on an IWA show was one of Ian's dream matchups... and i might have wanted to put Cannon/Stone from 12-20 on instead of the Hero match (as mentioned in an above post, it's not as good w/o seeing the previous match. while the Cannon match isn't as good, it stands on its own better). and certainly would've put it on instead of the Sydal/Delirious v. Boz/Bradley tag. and no Mitch Rider would've been preferred. eh, such is life. ... but all in all it looks to be an excellent way to foolishly spend money better used for rent and bills. so i'm happy
