The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/stor..._len&id=1713854 The Raiders hired Sean Payton to be head coach. Payton...as you might recall is the guy that Jim Fassel took the playbook away from and had to call the plays himself. He'll also become the youngest coach in the league...at 40 I wonder how many of his players are within a couple years of him. I boldly predict this guy gets walked all over by everyone. Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Fuck the Raiders, and the Pats get to keep their cooridinators. I'm surprised they didn't grab the Philli Def Coordinator who was highly praised

Blitzing the piss out of the other team every other play? That doesn't take a whole lot of genius to do...

Guest Bottled Black Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I heard on WFAN tonight that they are denying the rumors, Apparently Payton was headed back to Dallas without a contract.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Sporting News radio said the Raiders won't confirm too... but they said word out of Dallas is that the contract is 4 years something million dollars (I don't remember...which is sad since they just said it...I'll guess around 6 million)
OldSchoolWrestling 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Payton...as you might recall is the guy that Jim Fassel took the playbook away from and had to call the plays himself. Payton with the playbook = Giants go to superbowl Payton without the playbook = Giants suck ass
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Right...then the next year he called the plays and they sucked ass... They took the playbook away and they turned it around.
OldSchoolWrestling 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I think the Giants just never had the right players and still don't.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Davis got lucky with hiring a few young, relatively unheralded coaches in the past (Madden, Gruden, Shanahan - although the last 2 had more success after they left the Raiders) and is trying to catch lightning in a bottle by making hires like this again. But he doesn't realize that he has as many Callahan-type hires as he does good ones. It's great watching the Raiders make shitty choices; I'm one of the ones that's absolutely ecstatic that Weiss and Crennel will stay in New England for another year. The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I think the Giants just never had the right players and still don't. Then he ought to do much better with the Raiders. ... He's walking into HELL.

The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Ha. Even a QB coach won't take that job. Betweenm Al Davis and a team that needs to be blown up...
tpww7 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 What about Fassell? Or did he turn down too?
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I don't think he's on Al Davis' list of candidates. Fassel probably would want some say in the draft, free agency, personell...or you know...when he can go to the bathroom. Can't have that.
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted January 22, 2004 What about Fassell? Or did he turn down too? Fassel was one of the final coaches in the list for the job.. it basically came down to him and Payton. I honestly don't think Fassel wants any part of the Raiders' organization and I couldn't blame him.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted January 22, 2004 Neuhisal is the only one left it appears. Pats cooridinators won't take the job because it pays less than what they would make here and they would actually have less say than what they have now.
OldSchoolWrestling 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2004 Word is that Payton was pressured by Parcels to make a decision in the next day or so. Al was not in a hurry to hire a coach and may want to wait until after the Super Bowl so that he can interview some of the coaches on the Pats. Payton was not offered the job but had a good chance of getting it. Denny Green wanted the job but also wanted to know right away if it was his. This job will go to someone who is bright, young and doesn't mind Al having the player personel power. Its a stepping stone and a start for some of these people to make a name for themselves, ala Jon Gruden.
