Random Gig Review #1 : Good Charlotte

Recommended Posts

You know something, there is something about this band that I REALLY like. I decided to go and see if they could cut it live. The had an AWFUL support band called 'The Business'. This might have worked for OTHER bands, but a Sex Pistols wannabe band are NOT the kind of band that are gonna warm the crowd up. Do you see the young crowd warming up to songs like 'We Want Justice, Not Politics' ? STUPID choice of support band. It's when they start talking about being working class that crowd REALLY seem to hit the 'we don't give a fuck' mode. I could not have been happier when they got off stage, and it's also the first time I've ever phoned my mate to tell him how shit a support band were as soon as they were done. It was AWFUL.

So, when the opening of 'A New Beginning' started up, the fans were rabid, and when the song kicked in, the whole place just went WILD ! The biggest mosh pit I think I've seen started, and the entire seating area ( which is where I was ) was going wild as well. Then, 'The Anthem' starts a huge singalong. They had the whole place ( including me ) eating out of the palm of their hands. 'This Is The Anthem, Throw All Your Hands Up' ... and that's EXACTLY what everyone did. They then went on to the VERY Blink-esque 'Story Of My Old Man'. I'm unsure of the order of the rest of the set. The older songs didn't get as big of a reaction than the newer songs due to the debut album not doing very well in the UK, although 'Seasons' was immense, and 'Waldorf Worldwide' was a HELL of a lot of fun, but it was songs like 'The Day That I Die' and 'Girls and Boys' that made the crowd react. The highlight of the night though was the AMAZING 'Hold On'. They ended with 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous' which is IMO, the weakest of their singles. The entire show ( apart from the support band ) was a breath of fresh air, and one of the best pop shows you are EVER likely to see.

I would give the show a 9/10.

Eddie Vedder at MSG on July 8th:

If it weren't for the Buzzcocks, who knows what we'd sound like. Maybe Good Charlotte or something like that. Not that they're bad, they're good but they sound like...they taste like a popsicle shoved up someones ass. But hey, some people are into that.

Good quote.

I really don't have any opinion on them. "The Click" was alright, but other then that they don't do anything for me. I think they get a lot of unwarrented hate just cause people use the word "punk" with them.

How do you live in the UK and not know who The Business are?!? They've been around a lot longer than Good Charlotte, and will most likely still be around long after Good Charlotte have cashed in their pop-sound as much as they good and disappeared. The Business are one of the most influential Oi! bands of all time, and have been putting out quality records for a few decades now. I can understand why a Good Charlotte fan wouldn't appreciate their sound, but to write them off as a "Sex Pistols wannabe band" is a fucking joke. Those two bands sound NOTHING alike - if anything, Good Charlotte has stolen more from the Pistols sound than the Business have.

The one thing that I will agree with you is that choosing The Business to open for bubblegum pop-"punk" was a shite decision. I've seen The Business 3 times now, and each time was with a hardcore or punk band. And the fans dug them. Put them with a pop band and it's understandable that they'd go over like a fart in church.

That's why I hated them so much. I WANTED to see bubblegum pop, that's what I was there to see, and I was more shocked than anything at 'The Business'. Oh, and GC may have stole Pistols ideas, but The Business sounded SO much like them it wasn't even funny.

I would actually say that GC are, at best, mediocre musicians, but they have enough energy in their music to make me ignore it.

I'm not whether or not I envy a brain working on such simple terms. 'Well, they suck but there was stuff moving and bright lights so I was adequately stimulated'.
