I can't use Internet Explorer!

Every time I try to get on the internet, it says "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

 

I can only get on the internet by going to a folder and typing an http address in the address bar, but no other way. Can someone help me?

What version of Windows are you running? If 98/ME/2000 you can go to the Control Panel and then Add/Remove programs, click on Internet Explorer (the one with out any Q on it as they are patches) and select Remove and then select the Repair option.

 

If XP try:

 

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Yeah, I run XP, but do you think you could dumb that down just a little bit? I know a little bit about computers but not enough to not have to have my hand held through repair procedures.

Sorry.

 

Click on Start and Run and then copy/paste - rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

 

and click OK.

Hrm, I had this exact same problem yesterday evening when I got on the comp. All I did was run SysRes, used the save from earlier that day, and everything was peachy keen afterwards

 

As for what happened, I'm not sure... but the system ran its own save during the day while I was at school, and I know my dad was on sometime between then and when I got on, so draw your own conclusion on that one

On a somewhat unrelated note, do you think you can answer a couple questions for me Mrant?

 

1. How do you compress the files on your computer to make more space? Do you need to backup your hard drive first?

 

2. How do you make the taskbar empty when you start the computer up? All those things on I don't need except the firewall and the anti-virus and everything else loading up is really slowing down my start-up time.

1. In XP you can turn on file compression by Right Clicking on your HD and clicking the Compress drive to save disc space. You shouldn't need to back up anything.

 

2. First go into the program itself and see if there is an option to disable it from start up. 2nd thing would be to go to the Startup folder and you can delete anything that you don't want. 3rd thing would be to go to Start->Run and then type in msconfig and uncheck the programs you don't want to start.

If you have a Gateway, you should have some system restore disks they gave you with your machine. Run those; they should reinstall/"repair" Windows, while giving you the option to maintain all your files and settings. I've done it more than a couple times on my own machine and solved every problem I've had.

I was about to that, but it says it will take 20 hours.
