More Survivor Series 97

Recommended Posts

How soon after the screwjob at SS97 did everyone know that it was a shoot? Did Meltzer report it right away or something? Did people still think it was a work for a while afterwards? Was Neidhart's contract up, or did he just leave the WWF a few weeks after? Did Bulldog just flat out leave? What was the general reaction on the net?

Thanks!

It was pretty apparant to me that the whole thing was not a work when I was watching it for the first time, you could tell by the look on Bret's face to me. He is a great actor, yes, but something was different that night that just told you 'Bret got fucked over'

The general concencess on the net is what you would expect. Imagine if Vince had ran into the Rumble a few nights ago, eliminated Benoit and declared himself the winner and the one receiving the title shot at WMXX - the feeling was about as positive as it would be had THAT have gone down.

I'm fairly sure Neidhart & Bulldog asks for contract releases and were granted them under the circumstances of Bret's departure from the Federation. Owen did the same, but was denied.

Didn't Bulldog have to pay to get out of his contract?

Indeed he did.

He had to pay $150,000 to buy out of his contract on which he still had three years.

Holy crap! I never knew that. That's a lot of money to give up. Wow...

Since he breached his contract, I'm guessing it came out of his own pocket.

Yeah, but when you consider how much he got from WCW, $150,000 was not a bad price to pay.

Even if Bulldog was getting paid a lot by WCW, $150,000 is still a lot of money to lose just so he could leave. Since I have no idea how much he was being paid by WWE (or his soon to be contract with WCW) i'll just leave it at that.

I didn't yet have the Internet at the time of the Montreal Incident so the entire thing took me by surprise.

Instead of Bret FINALLY getting the last laugh on Shawn and DX, I tune in to Nitro (which aired at 4pm in Alaska; Raw aired at 8pm) to see the nWo with Canadian flags and Mean Gene talking about Bret hitting a "WWF official" backstage the night before.

Then on Raw, the WWF is on the defense - making it to sound like Bret was some sort of asshole primadonna.

When I finally did get the Net two months later, I read up on everything I could - mostly relying on Slam! Wrestling. Check out some of their archived interviews (assuming they're still up) with Davey Boy (early 98), Bret (late November 97), and Owen (Feb 98) following Montreal. There is some kayfabe in there but it's pretty informative if you want their opinions on the matter. Davey does mention the contract situation.
