File sharing programs that actually work

Recommended Posts

Guest Banders Kennany

Hey fellas, I'm at college and I think they have something in place to restrict file sharing (i.e. it goes sooo slow). I think what it is is a firewall, but I'm not totrally sure since I'm dumb as shit with computers. So anyone else have this problem and know how to circumvent it?

edit - this probably should be in the computers folder right? Sorry.

Thanks so much.

I tried WinMX on a recommendation PM from someone, but it doesn't seem to have really good variety on lesser known stuff and a lot of time when it's listed, it's way backlogged in downloading.

I've heard good things about Bit Torrent, so I'm assuming it has a good sized user base that might be able to get me the unknown stuff I want...right?

Bit Torrent is ok (if you use a site like suprnova.org) but it's crap for music.

If that's what you're after, try soulseek (if it works on your computer).

If you are really worried about getting sued then do not use bit torrent, for movies

at least. As you download a file from there, other people will be downloading pieces of

that file from you. It is not downloading that people get in trouble for; it is for allowing

others to download from you. With other programs you can download the file and then

make it so other people can't download it from you. The Motion Picture Association

is constantly monitoring bit torrent and sending out nasty letters. I haven't heard

about the RIAA targeting it yet though.

I did not knowthat. Although at least motion picture assoc give you a warning before they sue.

Bit Torrent is still goodness though. But anything on there will turn up on Kazaa/Slsk etc.

DC++ is awesome for transferring a ton of music. A group of us at my college wound up creating a portal there, and so anyone on the college network of computers can share music with each other.

And the best thing is: a ton of the faculty helped set it up. And it can't track IP addresses.

In other words: DC++. It should help.

Soulseek has a ton of lesser known bands...

I use IRC and IRCSPY mostly though

Hotline is good too, if you can figure out how to use it (lots of people cant)
